Depends on what you are doing in LA and where you are living there, a friend of mine lives there and doesn't drive. He has access to a car if he needs it, but he always travels by bus to his work and etc.

not with any degree of ease. The bus system here is hardly on time, if ever. The rail system only has 5 lines that won't be of any use to you. And taking a bike anywhere here is suicide.

Then again, we DO have the worst congestion in the country. So no matter what you do, if you move here you're fucked.

where are you planning on living in L.A.? also, what area will you work in?

it's doable, takes planning. there are a number of blogs that could answer this. try the following:

    laist.com
    blogging.la
    la.curbed.com
    thebusbench.com

We have the largest fleet of buses in the entire nation here.

I'll be damned why they're never on time, but hey we got the numbers right? Anyway, to answer your question, sure of course it's possible. You just have to work out a little system for yourself.

Just trying to wing out there in the city of angels is monumental migraine just waiting to happen. Learn and get a feel for the bus schedules, subway schedules and hop in a cab.

    You should be fine.

Um, no. Pretty much the whole Los Angeles Basin and San Gabriel Valley (Foothill Transit is amazing) is pretty well connected with buses. Other parts with Metrolink (commuter rail) or Metro's light rail.

Also, you don't need to depend solely on buses/trains. OP, remember, bike! If you live near the Los Angeles River or some of the other channels, they have bike paths along to make bike riding easier. Bike to and frim bus stop. Just be careful about taking it on the trains, it's best you ride trains before or after rush hour so you don't take up too much space.

I'm the guy who posted the Red Cars photo. It was the longest urban rail system of its time.
