51 KB White House Shifts as Auto Rescue Stalls Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)12:43 No.65007
WASHINGTON – Funds from the federal bailout of Wall Street may be headed the way of U.S. auto makers, after a frantic, last-ditch attempt to forge a relief package for the auto industry collapsed in the U.S. Senate late Thursday.

The Bush administration said early Friday it was considering tapping the $700 billion rescue program for financial firms to aid the Big Three. White House press secretary Dana Perino said it would be "irresponsible" to further weaken the economy by letting the Detroit car companies fail.

except ford has said that they currently don't need the government bailout, and that they're set through the end of next year at the very least.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)17:31 No.65044
Fuck these guys. They've for years been fighting tooth and nail the progress of American economic, energy, and environmental policies. Bankrupt and reorganize them for the 21st century.

Fuck the UAW too. I'm a member of a transportation union myself but even I know that there's a difference between trying to get fair pay and treatment and blackmailing corporations for exorbitant pay and benefits. Although I am glad the UAW didn't concede lower wages in order to secure the bailout; I don't think it would have been better to allow these companies to operate as dysfunctional as they have at the cost of their employees.

Now they'll have to figure it out together.

So why, exactly, is Kia and Toyota doing so well right now while the American companies are begging for money?

They're making the right cars at the right time and working with innovative business models; they're not working on the assumption that because they are who they are, people will always buy from them. They're making the things people want to buy instead of just gliding on their reputations.

<--- my feelings on this. Sadly, Obama will probably keep the dinosaurs alive once he's sworn in.

What really irks me about this bail out is that the big three brought most of the problems upon themselves. When the government discussed raising the minimum MPG requirement for manufacturers they threw a fit and made it so we're something like 15 years away from the date when they're required to make cars that get at least 30 miles per gallon. And then in their TV ads they brag about their new models getting 20-25 mpg, never mind that my (1998) Toyota gets 35 mpg (with proper maintainance and gas-saving driving).
My family's station wagon (a Ford) experiences major parts failure every 10,000 miles, and ate two transmissions before hitting 100,000 miles. My Toyota has only needed one major thing replaced after 120,000 miles, which was the factory steering column.

YOU WANT MONEY DETROIT? STOP BUILDING SHITTY CARS!

if you don't support the bailout you are fantastically dumb and don't know what the effects of such massive unemployment are

if you support the bailout you are fantastically dumb because you're putting money into the hands of terrible executives that have made bad business decisions for nearly three decades and are now facing their doom because of it

don't like either solution? nationalize them, faggots

    >> Anonymous 12/13/08(Sat)04:08 No.65158
I think nationalization goes against the whole ideology behind a car. Not that it wouldn't be a good thing. But when cars were produced way back then they were meant to bring personal freedom and choice, something americans still want to this day.

I think if we were given the choice we would nay but if it were forced down our throat we'd have no choice.

^ continuing off the top post

I'm kind of glad hearing the support from the government. I agree with most of the comments above. The Big Three have screwed up big time and deserve punishment. But... I come from an automotive design trade school and it really sucks for all the creative talent when the company you eventually want to work for falls in a ditch.

GM, Ford, Chrysler Better change their ways or they will lose a lot of respect from the incoming workforce.
