My birthfather is an Amtrak engineer. He gets a death (suicide or accident) when he is at work on his route about once a year.

Here's the problem, OP. I can't tell you how successful you'll be with your death. But if you do die, you'll sit in the minds of the crew. If something happens and you don't die, well...you will be prosecuted for trespassing. No matter how badly you are hurt. Count on that.

I want to make sure I would die first. I want a painless death. I thought if I stepped out from behind a tree (which there are along the tracks) and went head on with one of these behemoths while they have their speed up, I don't see how I could live.

Don't be a selfish asshole. People will be late if the have to scrape you off the front of a train. Jump off of the Half Dome instead.

Which is why this method is a very, very bad method. You fail, you do jailtime. You succeed, you disrupt the lives of hundreds. If you're that desperate to make an impact on other people's lives, do something else.

OP, just promise me, that you'll think about the consequences of the society, pick a line where it's possible to continue service in case off a suicide. In my country, it can take 4-6 hours of police investigation when it's worst, but that's a half work day!
