Guess what murrikans, in western Yurop gas is 1.6-1.7 eur for a liter, wich is 2.2 bucks, wich means a gallon is almost 8.4 USD. And still ne bike revolution.

I don't get how people accept such things, it's a fucking robbery. Today was sunny as fuck, almost 20°c and yet everyone was stuck in their little cars during rush hours. Marx didn't know shit, car is the ultimate alienation tool.

People build their lives around cars; they slowly forget how to live without them. By the time they are 18 or 20 people can't imagine living without them. It's a messed up cycle since they become parents, and feel obligated to pay for a car that their child can't afford.

It's not uncommon at all for people here to spend $200/month+ on gas. Insurance might add $50, the car itself could easily add $100 again. But people won't move closer to work because they cannot conceive of living without a car. It would be hilarious except it's fucking up the planet.

There are concrete answers to every question about how to live without a car but somehow they are shrouded by some weird mass car hysteria built on 80 years of excessive petroleum use.

Inb4 /o/ trolls be trolling. Say what you want but try to think about who's really in denial. Exponentially increasing gas prices, climate problems, health problems, and deaths by cars themselves VS. "faggots ride bikes." Electric cars might be the next step but we can't sustain that level of excess either. Maybe people will start to figure it out while they still have the choice.

In the U.S., people can't fathom traveling anywhere without a car because there's almost no infrastructure accommodating bicycles. Bikes are treated as recreational vehicles, so all the bike paths are built to connect to parks instead of commercial centers, making it difficult and dangerous to commute to work or run errands using a bicycle.

In my city, the best you can hope for is a 1.5-foot bike lane separated from the road only by a thin white line of paint that drivers largely ignore. And that's only on suburban roads, the main streets don't have bike lanes. Motorists here don't know how to deal with pedestrians or cyclists.

What also grinds my gears is that I rarely see a car with more than one person in it. Sedans, trucks, SUVs, all with only the driver and no cargo or passengers. What a waste of energy and space.

    Gas prices. Car driving. Whatever.

Bikefags are just as ideologically bound into rigid modes of thought as the cagers are. Cars aren't really problems. Anyone who cared could solve the congestion of our streets by giving massive tax rebates to people who don't own a personal motorized commuting vehicle. And when they start putting carpool lanes everywhere and enforcing it with massive fines, people will get on board.

All that needs to be done is a little legislation.

What you forget is people with decent jobs can afford gas even if it was two or three times the current (ridiculous) price. I live in Europe and pay $8 a gallon. I chose to live in the countryside and commute about 15 miles (20-25 minutes) by car. Why? Because I can get a much nicer house for the same money, and it's in the countryside with nice fields and hills and rivers etc. rather than a smelly, overcrowded city.

I don't mind that I spend a bit more commuting than I need to; I enjoy driving more than I'd enjoy walking, cycling, or taking the bus. inb4 fat neckbeard; I'm 5'10" and 160 lbs. I cycle and hike a lot on weekends, but cycling a commute in all weather carrying all the stuff you need for work sucks - at least I hated it when I tried it for a year.

With hills, buddy. I've done that ride a few times and you get sweaty. I know some people shower at work etc. but that kind of hassle is for the few dedicated cyclists. Like me, most people cannot be bothered with that just to get to work every day. Driving that commute is a MUCH more pleasant experience, that's why I'm prepared to pay for it. I agree more people could cycle, but it's not going to be a large scale transport solution.
    >> Anonymous 03/16/12(Fri)15:19 No.340481
    >>340480
I know it's not for everyone, but cycling is a solution to a lot of transportation woes. The developed world has (comparatively) great road infrastructure with many people living within a 10 mile radius of everything they need. It's silly how dependent how all of us (including me) are dependent on cars.

    >"...my dad can always find a cheap one after drivin a little."

I've often pondered when it becomes null to go driving more to go look for even slightly cheaper gasoline prices. I've known some people that will drive clear across town, through traffic-laden streets and tons of stop lights, just to save 10 cents more per gallon...in an F-150. His idiocy makes me rage, as he spends more money than that which he "saves" driving around looking for cheaper gas prices. I'm not saying it's the same case with your dad, but some people take it to the extreme without thinking...and iMad because of it.

If there weren't people willing to go a little out of their way for cheap petrol, there'd be a lower incentive for the petrol stations to compete with each other and prices would rise.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/12(Wed)09:20 No.341495
    >>341493
It's just a bit silly since a person pays about 12-19 cents per mile driven in gasoline. (assuming $3.63 a gallon)

So if you drive 3 miles to find a cheaper gas station it would need to be 3 cents a gallon cheaper if you put in 12 gallons for you to break even. That's assuming you go with the 12 cent a gallon estimate which means you're getting about 30 mpg.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/12(Wed)09:26 No.341496
I normally just use a website to show which is the cheapest fuel near me, then I can usually choose to fill up somewhere cheap without having to hunt around or go far out of my way. But even if you did go out of your way enough for it to actually cost you a little extra, it provides a bit of competitive pressure if enough people do that.

Of course if you could reliably vote for politicians who would work to reduce the cost of gas that'd be great, but they're all full of shit.

You do know that oil is a finite resource, right? It's only ever going to follow an upwards pricing trend. People have known that it's not infinite since the day they first started drilling, the only reason that the total non-surprise of higher energy prices will wreck the economy is because everyone has been too stupid for too long to do anything about it, like reduce the world's dependence on it.
We've all done too little for too long, and so now we've fucked ourselves in the ass and there's no way out of the hole.
The economy is going to collapse in the near future, and motorised personal transportation for the majority of people will become a thing of the past.

There's way more oil than you might think, we've used up a lot of what's under the land but ocean is 2/3 of the earth's surface and there's Antarctica. Eventually yes but we have a long time to make the transition to new ways of fueling vehicles. We could be using biofuels more to reduce shocks and ease that transition when it comes.

Doesn't matter if we use up every single drop available, at a certain point it becomes too expensive to justify.
