We're
both intercity and commuter (somewhat similar to the UK's rail network,
or America's NE corridor line). Pic related, the lines at the moment -
as you can see the mainline starts at Nahariya and heads south via Haifa
and Tel Aviv, and from there it splits into a clusterfuck of lines
continuing south/east. We're currently going through a massive expansion
and when it's finished the lines will go as far south as Eilat and as
far east as Irbid (in Jordan). Our first high-speed rail linking Tel
Aviv and Jerusalem is also under construction, and I'm hoping to get a
few of those services when they come online. As for me personally, I'd
say 95% of my services are passenger, mostly divided evenly between
commuter trains and express services. About 5% are freight, which mostly
consists of ferrying container between the ports of Ashdod and Haifa or
from the mineral refineries on the Dead Sea (the line to Dimona
continues east to the Dead Sea) to one of those two ports. Ever engineer
hates them - because pretty much all the budget goes to the passenger
sector and maybe 1% to freight, the freight trains are 40 year old
pieces of complete crap. They keep promising us they'll get around to
upgrading them eventually, but the passenger sector has priority and
with the new trains and station renovations and line expansion and what
not they have no budget at all left over for it. |
