Bay Area Rapid Transit, otherwise known as MuBARTek. only goes to the easy bay because the North Bay NIMBYs didn't want successful african americans in their posh neighborhoods, nor did silicon valley. On the bright side it's one of the quietest train systems in the US compared to NYC and Chicago.

Are you fucking stupid? The entire Bay Area pays for BART but not all regions get it. The South Bay wants it but funding has always been an issue.

Besides, BART is proprietary and wasteful spending, the wrong mode of transportation that would do what Caltrain and the Capitol Corridor but worse.

Anyone else have to bear the shit that is Northern Rail? This is a promotional quote from their website:

"Northern Rail — Oldest trains in Britain. That's because the Southerners want to keep the north in the past, where they belong. Serves Cumbria , the North East , Yorkshire and Lanacasheeerre. Wannabe Northerners in Derbyshire and Lincolnshire also benefit from this exquisite service. They think that Leeds is the spiritual and physical centre of the universe. Therefore, Amazingly, ,passengers customers people who give us money travelling from Leeds to elsewhere go from bad to worse. Lancastershire has a massive network that covers every square millimetre. The lucky bastards. The network also serves Liverpool Lime Street, where Scousers ride the trains to Wigan North Western as a daily purgatory, and then return to 'the pewl', to get ridiculously drunk and engage in fights with Mancunians who are still waiting for their delayed trains back to Manc-land."

The Picture depicts the station at which I get off, fortunately the building at the bottom right is a pub called The Knott; it eases my troubles.

But yes, Northern has the highest concentration of crap trains in the country. I stay in Scotland now, but when I was at University in Liverpool, I went to visit my Grandad in Wakefield and had to suffer a Pacer for the entire journey. Not pleasant. I believe there are plans to electrify Liverpool-Manchester, which is long overdue. They really need electrify all the lines around Leeds/Bradford/Wakefield, as well as Carlisle-Newcastle, Carlisle-Settle and... just fucking everything, just so we can get rid of the Pacers.

I think the idea is that if they use the Pacers as much as possible, and go light on the maintenance, they can be rid of them sooner when they all start failing.

I think sitting in an MXA is a bit uncomfortable because of the seats (my legs are often between the person's legs who is sitting in front of me, but it's ok when it's a young pretty girl), so I'm often standing while I'm travelling by HÉV.

Is it just really comfortable seating, or are the vibrations from the train just right?

On an unrelated note, I really wish my city didn't discontinue it's railroad. The closest one is about 20-25 miles away, which isn't HORRIBLE, but I'd still like it closer.

The seating isn't impressive, pic related. Rather big I'll admit but the same upholstery as a typical bus, and no compartments. The trick is in the vibrations, or more correctly, the lack thereof, as well as the lack of noise. If you're not looking out the window you won't even realize the train has started moving (yes, it has actually happened to me once). And noise? Only a steady, barely audible tack-tack-tack fading somewhere into your dreams...

Still, it's bad, it grows on you. I visited Italy a while back and took the train into Rome, saw huge ass seats and actual compartments and went ZOMG AWESOME. Then the train started moving, and it was rocking around so violently I nearly reached for the emergency break. Then I looked around and saw no one was even noticing it...
