Worth reading for those of us who believe walking, cycling and taking the train is better than owning a car.

this is why we need more effectively designed cities and better public transit. cars are absurdly expensive, and when it comes to the point that you absolutely need a car to get around town, well it sucks to be poor because all of your check goes to transportation, and you can never get ahead. sucks to be middle class too - that's a lot of wasted money. sucks to be upper class - that's a lot of wasted time in traffic.

our cities don't work for *anyone* anymore.

This site seems hung up on demonizing the bus as worse than cars. I'd rather have a big blocky bus than 20 individual cars on the same road.

sweet, i guess all those people that commute to work by car should all just walk the 60 or so kilometers. capital idea.

You shouldn't have a daily job you have to travel 60 km to get to unless travel is part of the job and is paid for.

We should all be transported to our destinations via pressurized tubes like Futurama.

The cost of operation and acquisition for the individual motorist is nothing compared to the cost for the environment and our following generations. Individual transport is not wrong per se, what is wrong is that every living organism on this earth pays a price for every individual transport every day and this price is way to high to be acceptable. During the world's industrialisation it came to be that motorism developed more than public transport (especially in the US) and therefore everyone wants to change their mode of transport may not always be able to do so due to the local urban planning. This can however be fixed and our priority should be to make transport as environmentally friendly as possible and right now it seems that the only way to do that is to go from individual vehicles to public transport.

...which you seem to have missed the point about town planning being part of the problem. If you lived withing walking or cycling distance of your job, then you wouldn't need to commute by car.

bus wears down road necessitating more frequent road works
much better to replace with trams/streetcars or better still train

    30km one way, 30km back

Motorcycles are the solution, you can filter though the traffic and park wherever you like for free

Now we'll be sure to come out on top when we have our civilized urban-planning discussions with the city fathers. How can they ignore reason?

    Montreal Turcot victim signing off.

What's the use? I don't think anyone disagrees with the material here, but right now there's no good, readily available, and easy alternative to cars for many people. You can't undo the way our cities and society have been developed.
