    ITT Bicycle Speeding Ticket Stories:

I just got pulled over for the first time. I am a MTBer who is training for a triathlon. My current training route takes a short ride through a school zone. Up until today I have had no problems because school was out for summer but on my route I came upon this stretch that was 20 MPH during school. The road is slightly downhill and I didn't want to slow down because I would throw off my pace. My gps bike computer said 32 and I figured there was no way I was going to get pulled over. Boy was I wrong, the officer said that they don't make exceptions for cyclists.

TL;DR 30 in a 20 school zone on my TT bike.

There's this super wide residential half-mile flat road on my daily route that is blocked off by the wind. I'll be quite proud the day I get a ticket for speeding through there. So many drivers have gotten tickets down it. Speed limit is 25. I've reached 38 down it and cars still zoomed ahead of me.

You can take your bike and shove it up your ass!

FUCK I hate bikers! GET THE FUCK OFF THE ROAD YOU MAKE ME SO NERVOUS AT LEAST RIDE ON THE SIDEWALK WITH THE OTHER PEDESTRIANS

And yes, I know you have wheels, but that doesn't mean you can ride in the street with the big boy vehicles, okay little baby?

Now go back to your little baby sidewalk with your little baby friends and keep riding your 19th century baby contraption to work everyday you poor piece of shit.

I'm a damn good driver. Maybe if I didn't have you assholes always creeping closer and closer to the side of my 2-ton vehicle with your little baby tin-foil training wheels, I wouldn't feel so nervous.

I mean what if you fell off?

INSTANT DEATH ASSHOLE. AND THEN YOUR FAMILY SUES ME FOREVER.

It might be the Radar or Laser equipment is not certified for bicycles. You should review this, because if you go to court and you are wrong, it is usually pretty expensive, especially if they call in technical experts

Ok, let's get this straight. I'm a roadie. I've been passed by trucks tons of times so I feel VERY comfortable. If you see those guys with tights, don't worry about them. I just ask you to give us some space. We've probably have seen you half a mile away, so we're ready.
But if you see people in casual clothes, no helmets, and w/e be scared of them. You can usually tell the difference between an experienced rider and a casual rider.

Actually, as a casual biker (I commute to school on a single speed roadbike) I get nervous when riding in the street. I ride down a one way 3 lane strip and stay as far over as I can but I'm always worried some jackass not paying attention will clip me and that'll be the end. I'd ride the sidewalk but they're pretty shitty in my area (lots of gaping cracks, uneven, huge dips at intersections, etc.) and it would slow me down tremendously. I guess I should get a helmet........but that's so.......uncool right?

This is why I love Quebec, the cops don't enforce anything around here. I've been pulled over twice drunk on my bike and once for going too fast. Never got tickets for the incidents.

    >I mean what if you fell off?

Unless we get sideswiped by bigfoot at light speed we are not going to fall off. Read up on how you stay upright on a bike.

inb4 hitting something on the road. Any half decent cyclist knows to look ahead 50-75 feet for potholes and other obstacles.

If you can keep a speed of 8-10 mph then you need to be on the road riding with traffic. Never ride facing traffic. I almost splattered some porch monkey last weekend because he was riding facing traffic around a blind corner.

but I will bite a little.

A lycra clad cyclist shouldn't be too high on the list of things that make you nervous.
Certainly no where near as high as other cars, and drivers.

What should make you nervous is other drivers.

Pic related, it is what you can and should be nervous about.

drivers actually drive closer to cyclists with full gear, they think you have more experience and leave you less space when passing.

While this has been tested to be true, the results still show that wearing a helmet is a good idea.

I don't entirely disagree with this guy, because there are some retarded bicyclists out there.

You know how in high school, the black kids walked through the hallways really slowly and in lines? I've met packs of bicyclists like that — just like the black kids — road in packs, blocking traffic for the cars behind them and refusing to move out of the way. What would have been a 10 minute drive for me if they had had the brains to know when to follow and when to break protocol and face the (nonexistent) oncoming traffic turned into a 30 minute ordeal. Fuck you assholes, you could have at least pulled over for a moment or something.

I don't know exactly how they were riding since I can't exactly decypher your description but I can tell you this:

When cyclists ride in packs usually mean they are many and instead of riding single file taking up more road space and being vulnerable to cars that overtake too close for comfort they bunch up and become more visible to drivers, pass through intersections faster and are easier/safer to overtake.

Also, there are some cyclists that train for races so they won't stop just to let you pass, they have a specific training to do and they'l do it.

It reminded me earlier today when I was told (screamed at) to get on the bicycle lane. Problem is I was training at the specific pace of 25mph and the bicycle lane is for pedestrians too. You can imagine me hitting a pedestrian or a slower cyclist at those kinds of speeds. I understand I legaly belong in the bicycle lane but sometimes you just have to use common sense.
    >> Anonymous 09/09/10(Thu)18:57 No.218189
    >>218180

Allow me to be a bit clearer.

We're riding on a long, semi-rural road. Standard two lane, pass friendly fare. Very few vehicles going in either direction.
In front of me is a pack of bicyclists, driving significantly (obviously) under the speed limit.
These guys can see that see for a very long distance — long enough to see that there are no cars coming any time soon. Yet, they refuse to move out of the way for the truck that is stuck on their ass.
To make matters worse, they're taking up part of the left lane, so I can't pass either.

I like bikes, I'm cool with bicycling, and even this whole "traveling in packs" thing is acceptable. If bikes + public transportation were the norm where I lived, I think that would be pretty swell. It's not the norm, however, and so I get a little pissed when bicyclists forget to take the people driving around in giant cruising hunks of steel into consideration.
    >> Anonymous 09/09/10(Thu)19:04 No.218191
    >>218189

I see now. Normaly when I think riding in packs I think in pairs and it takes up about 2/3 of the lane. If those guys managed to take the left lane too that is pretty annoying.
