Probably a black hole. I would like to see someone steal your bike from that.

I do that with all my old bikes. I cut the brake wires and shit and then leave it out somewhere with a weak lock on it. They get what they deserve.

A cable lock smeared with your own poop
    >> Anonymous 07/15/10(Thu)15:32 No.197451
Here's what I do. I think it's the best ratio of effort/weight to results.

I 'Sheldon Brown' the back wheel using a Kryptonite Evolution Mini:

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/lock-strategy.html

I used to cable lock the front wheel; now I have a Pitlock skewer for the front wheel instead. My seatpost is secured with a Zefal anti-theft QR.

This setup seems to be okay so far (about a year locking my $1100 road bike daily on a theft-prone college campus), and adds next to no weight while riding.

This is a vast improvement over my old strategy, which was a long-shackle lock through the rear wheel and seat tube, with a cable lock for the front wheel and a thin cable lock for the seatpost.
    >> Anonymous 07/15/10(Thu)15:33 No.197454
My only concern about the Sheldon strategy is that some dumb thief will look at it, go 'hey, easy, I'll just saw through the rim', and wreck my wheel trying to unsuccessfully steal the bike.
    >> Anonymous 07/15/10(Thu)15:34 No.197455
A $10 bike. Then you can use any lock.

Or a more expensive bike with a similar lock.

Abus. Either U-lock or chainlocks. My lockpicking pals recommend these.
Anyway, don't buy something with a tubular lock.

kryptonite U-locks are the best, but they come at a price.

Remember that even the best lock is nothing more than a deterrent. With the right tools and opportunity, your bike can be stolen in under a minute no matter what kind of lock protects it.
    >> Anonymous 07/15/10(Thu)20:36 No.197565
    >>197562
    samefag here, adding on.

I cycle competitively and have been locking my thousand-dollar racer on the streets of NYC for the past 7 years with a single kryptonite U-lock. Never been stolen. But it's insured if it is.

    I sense a troll.
    >> Anonymous 07/15/10(Thu)21:35 No.197577
    my set up:

    krypto u-lock - front wheel/bottom tube
krypto chain-lock - rear wheel/seat tube (the chain's lock around the frame)
pinhead skewers - just for the added protection

i think that's about as good as you can get before you start soldering your quick-releases to ensure you wheels and saddle don't get stolen.
