    It sure does look odd.
That glass along the stairs thing seems kind of neat, but I can't see how it's that important. You hardly spend much time in the staircases of a bus.

It's just like a Routemaster, but for the new generation!

Wait, it is a Routemaster for the new generation!

America has lots of low bridges, but wider roads made when larger vehicles were already common.

England has roads defined in midevil times. Tall arches and bridges to accomodate...well, I don't really know.

    The originals, for your troubles.

It's because public transport is a lot more widely used in Britain, especially buses.
We have single deckers too, but they are only used on the less used routes that only require a single decker.

pic related, it's buses on the main street in Edinburgh, and edinburgh is a relatively small city.

It's like that most days, for most of the day. Everyone uses the bus. No matter where you are in edinburgh there will usually be a near by bus stop that has a bus stopping at it that will take you near wherever you want to go, and you will usually never wait more than 10 minutes for a specific bus to show up. There are some places where you might need to get 2 buses to get where your going. It's an extremely efficient and popular service. There's no stigma attached to using the buses either. They are very clean and comfortable.

In the picture is princess street, the main street in edinburgh, it's about 3 quarter of a mile long, and has about 5 or 6 bus stops on it. there will be several buses at them all.
Theres a lot more buses than that in the morning rush hour and same in evening.

heres a better picture of the same street on probably a Sunday (judging by the amount of people, and lack of buses. the bus service is slightly reduced on a Sunday).

i know it looks chaotic but i reckon it's one of the best bus services in europe. The best i've ever used anyway.

because London and elsewhere used double decker trams early on, horse or cable first then later electric, as buses were introduced you built them double decker too
    Higher density requies greater capacity.
So infrastructure from early on was built to accommodate.
Now only a few places have trams, and only Blackpool has double decker trams (one of only three cities operating double decker trams as a matter of fact, Alexandria and Hong Kong are the other two)
