It's probable, but we already saw the degree to which people reduced fuel consumption in response to increased oil prices. It's unlikely any alternative source of power will be quite as underpriced as gasoline and diesel now are. Thus alternate modes of transport are likely to gain greater acceptance alongside whatever alternative fuel we end up developing.

Sure, cars aren't going anywhere, but trains will continue to make inroads on what is now the automobile's domain. This should particularly be the case once a few HSRs get built and all the idiots who lack passports figure out what we've been missing out on these past few decades. Then they won't be able to get HSR lines built fast enough.

Just like you did during the oil crisis? No wait, back then the whole country ended up standing still because of the lack of fuel.

To think LA could have the awesomest commuter rail ever (think PE not closing down but constantly expanding until now).
Tokyo would be a playground in comparison...

    Nigga you blind or something?

We got shitloads of trains in America. Like, more than some European countries. Put something on a train in Florida and pick it up again in Seattle, fuck.

Now, if you meant "hi-speed passenger rail" then yeah, that's true.

uhm..It was a joke actually. Cloverleaf Industries is the name of the company that purchased the Red Line and was going to eradicate Toon Town to build a freeway in the movie 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit.'
Actually, the Red Line was a loss leader developed primarily to develop real estate in the area for land baron Huntington. Once the 'burbs were up and running, its profitability declined significantly.
