09/10/09(Thu)00:15 No.113775I
actually live in a suburban area and can ride faster to work than I can
drive, but that's because my city has the absolute worst traffic
planning and street light timing you can imagine. And if I ride to the
university I'm actually slower in reaching the relevant parking lot
than I would be by car, but I ultimately get to class considerably
faster because I don't have to search for a place to park, and with the
bike I can park right in front of the classroom building's doors, which
removes the need for a long walk to and from the car parking.
And
as far as fuel costs go - $.05 of rice provides enough calories to
cover 15 miles at a moderate pace according to my simple calculations,
assuming you have a car that gets 40 mpg in the city, gasoline would
have to cost a little less than 14 cents per gallon (lol) for the fuel
costs to be equivalent. Including maintenance costs would make the cost
per mile even more in favor of the bicycle. |
