Cars should never have become the preferred mode of transportation, if only one in ten had a car (like in the 1920's, when public transportation was the only option) we'd all be better off, and public transit would be cheaper and better (because of greater use). But noooooooo GM had to get rid of streetcars, and now people are two lazy to walk two or three blocks to the subway station. Shit sux.

LOL. One of my father's friends lives in one of those areas where everybody has a car. Once he got drunk in a bar, and when he headed home, he got confronted by cops who couldn't believe an insane story of how he WALKED a few miles to drink a few beers and now intends to WALK to a store to get a sixpack more and then WALK home. So in the end they shoved him into their car and drove him around like a taxi. (And then got yelled at by his wife who didn't approve of her husband appearing in a police car, drunk as hell and with an extra sixpack of beer to boot)

As far as the whole biking/public transport thing goes, here are my two cents.
I bike mostly everywhere, since anywhere I need to go is within reasonable distance (~5km). Any longer than that, and I take the bus. Every month I pay the equivalent of $67 for a card that lets me take the bus or the local boat as much as I fucking please, and it turns out that I save twice as much money on doing that. However, I am saving up for a car, and I will be getting one at some point.
