  • /rs/ is back online. If you can't reach it, wait a few hours for DNS to update, or clear your DNS cache.

Major server overhaul complete—site should be significantly faster now.
Spam is also still a big issue. That'll be dealt with later this week.

let's have an intelligent debate about tripcode users. notice i called them tripcode users and not tripfags. follow my lead.

should we all take on a tripcode in /mu/? arguments for or against remaining anonymous.

Most of the shitty/annoying trolling comes from Anons.
Whether or not that is a tripcode user going Anon or not, I don't know.

Tripcodes for everyone, or do as 420chan or 7chan, can't remember which one, does and give users a PostID or whatever they call it.

I'm sure someone can't just post without a tripcode, right?

There's no good reason to have a tripcode, honestly. Not to mention, there are few things more faggoty than tripfag circlejerk threads.

Honestly, I don't pay attention to anonymous. They don't deserve any respect, because there's no backing up their opinions. You can get any shit tard anon in a thread, shitting up their opinions, or you can get somebody with a tripcode, who you know, and can tell whether to discount their opinion or not (like me! nobody will read this, because they see me, and know better.)

he was rather harsh but i agree with him. i like the everyone being nameless and faceless. not knowing what people look like, how old they are, their skin color, social class, etc. so the messenger doesn't overshadow the message.

yes, being anonymous makes it easier to troll but the trolling is easily spotted, called out and ignored. being anonymous means you're free to state a preference without being bound to your previous statements. and you can easily absorb negative comments because a negative directed towards anonymous is the same as being directed at the nobdy. you don't have a reputation to worry about. we're free to exchange useful and not-so-useful information without social bullshit getting in the way.

I'm indifferent. I use it more or less as a way to keep track of my own posts.

As far as forums go, they're more or less as bad they just usually have more active mods to clean the shit up.

Having a tripcode on /b/ is fucking retarded. On the rare occasion I go there, I get rid of my trip. On here, I like having a tripcode. Not to get attention, but because on a thread like this, I like having some sort of identity. Also, it's convenient to ctrl+f and type "Joey Joe Joe" to find my posts.
    >> Tom Guy !nUMv6IsOsY 12/29/09(Tue)23:05 No.6719816
I try to stay on topic in all the threads I post in and make.

Addressing the issue of, all tripcode users are attention whores is semi-accurate.

I do want to be noticed, but I want to be recognized in a positive light for bringing as much good to this board as I can. I don't see anything wrong with that.

    >> Anonymous 12/29/09(Tue)23:07 No.6719847
    >>6719761

No, it's not trolling. Just look at what happens to a "favorite tripfag" thread.

And nothing was ever said about 4chan being a legion of anon, that's you with your illusions of what you think 4chan is. 4chan doesn't require me to have a name, it has no functions that maintain profiles, or any social networking capability. It's a place to bypass bullshit and post whatever the hell I want to, and while I don't spend my time trolling, I wouldn't move to take it away from anyone because I'm not a cunt.

There is no reason to have a tripcode. If others do, that's fine. They don't add or subtract to the overall quality of the site anymore than anon do.

The fact of the matter is the majority of users here do have a tripcode. It's the first time I've ever seen it happen. And the majority of those tripfiends aren't even trolls; they're simply grossly uneducated in the ways of /mu/. They are downright ignorant in some cases. They should probably just stay anonymous. I've got no problem with the concept of tripfags in and of itself, but it gets abused. I think that you should only trip if you've got the expertise to be helpful to the board.

Are you so wedded to your prejudices that you need total anonymity to not allow things like race or gender to influence what you think of what someone says?

I like the fact that identity is optional, something one has to choose, not like real life where it's thrust upon you.

On a less wankery level I like that I can come to /mu/ and discuss shit with people who on at least some basic level I've gotten to know.

As for "use another forum", find me somewhere as fast moving an as unrestrained as /mu/ and I'll check it out.
    >> Twee As Fuck !rXjatVeY5M 12/29/09(Tue)23:11 No.6719885
    >>6719755
I think the social bullshit is somewhat helpful on a board like /mu/.

So much of the activity here is based around sharing and recommending new music that it helps for people to have identities. When someone has a tripcode, you can get an idea of their tastes and opinions and how in line they are with your own, meaning you can either know to trust their recommendations/statements or disregard them. Obviously this always doesn't work, but it can sometimes.

There's a lot of attention whoring that goes on on this board; there's no doubt about that. But to me those shitty trips aren't any harder to ignore than shitty anonymous posters. And the anti-tripfag backlash just makes it worse, both by giving them the attention they want and by making yet another thread that has nothing to do with music.

If anything, attention whoring tripfags are MORE easily spotted than trolling anonymous. You talk about ignoring shitty anonymous posters; why not do the same thing with the shitty tripfags?
    >> Anonymous 12/29/09(Tue)23:11 No.6719886
Trippers are people so desperate to get
attention or recongnition that they use a name on a Anonymous site. You can try to tell them all you want that it's a bad idea but it's like
telling a gay guy to fuck a hot girl, even if it
seems better for them they are not going to do it.

/v/ is really adament and wanting forced anon. That'd be fine, since most of the tripcode users on there are about %90 awful. (Janced Lack in particular). The rest of the %10 is divided as %2 actually good a posting and %8 using it as a means to keep track of their posts when needed. Hell, /v/ is a place where it's needed.

A mod banning would help, though.

/mu/ is more easy-going, and the tripcode users don't derail the threads any more often than the anon ones do.

    re: unrestrained

the heart and point of my argument is freedom. it's what attracts me to this board and i guess what attracts you. but when you start to introduce controls in the form of tripcodes, that's when we start to lose freedom. as an earlier tripcode user stated, she doesn't read anonymous because they aren't accountable. eventually, as more and more tripcode users are born, her way of thinking is going to become the norm. out will be anonymous, and in will be the cliques of regular users, calling each other by their tripcode, or worse, their real names. then they begin to talk about everything but music. this is what happens at "regular message boards." you can join a message board about cars, but before long it becomes like that tv show cheers where everybody knows your name. then the fights start, etc. at least here the disputes are at a juvenile level. when you "get to know someone" that's when the real hatred begins. it's like living with someone, sooner or later their flaws start to get to you.

tl;dr tripcode usage and acceptance is the first step towards the destruction of /mu/ (as we know it)
