Nothing is wrong with you. It's simply one of the greatest albums of all time. It even gets better every listen as you get more of an emotional connection to it.

This is true. However, her backing music and lyrics are both rather shit.

This album is incredibly over-rated. There's nothing creative about it. Chords chords chords chords. There are hundreds of artists who made this album, except without the occasional buzzing effect. The lyrics, however, are very good, and all of the songs go together in the album lyrically.

Personally, I think that the vocalist is a really important part of the band. They are the ones w/the ability to convey the music, lyrics and all, in a manner successful enough to invoke emotion.

When the vocalist is screaming instead of being able to sing loudly it shows a glaring weakness unless that is genre that they are representing. When the vocal skills are weak, the words/lyrics are lost to me. Even for as annoying as Emo is with the great number of lead singers whining throughout the song I've never heard one as awful as NMC's vocalist and that's saying a lot.

Anyone who says CHORDS CHORDS CHORDS has never heard a punk rock album in their life and would probably say the Ramones or The Stooges are a shitty band, along with the Carter Family and Hank Williams and quite a few British folk rock groups. No, the melodies that Mangum comes up with are NOT overplayed folk melodies. Believe it or not, Bob Dylan is not all there is to folk music, and oftimes Jeff Mangum's melodies derive more from 80s jangle pop like The Smiths. If you guys want to hate on this album, hate it because of the effeminate, self-obsessed middle class atmosphere. Hate it because it exemplifies the "sensitive" douchebag Jeff Mangum is and because his lyrics are meandering and boring, or hate it because of the "quirky" instruments thrown in as an afterthought.

The singer sounds monotone once his voice gets just a tad high, the chords are boring.
