This is me exactly. I started listening to alt rock, the nu metal. Then I found some Black metal and was trying to be all extreme. Now I have a music library of almost every subgenre of metal, only depending on whether it sounds good to me or not, not what the genre is.

Started with classic metal like Black Sabbath. Moved from there to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, who I still enjoy. Evolved from there into symphonic/power metal, which is what I primarily listen to now, and death metal, which I listen to from time to time.

Brutal Death Metal kid listens to death metal with emphasis on, that's right, brutality. Many stray to goregrind during this phase as well. Bands: late Behemoth, Nile, Anaal Nathrakh, Daath, The Monolith Death Cult.

Kvlt Black Metal teenagers are the most awesome kind of metal phase because FUCK YEAH BLACK METAL MOTHERFUCKERS. They read Nietzsche and listen to black metal. These are the golden days of any metal fan because you feel like FUCK YEAH BLACK METAL every day and you're too young to realize that you look and act like a complete faggot. No, seriously, you do. Bands include: Burzum, Xastur, more Burzum, Drudkh, A Forest Of Stars and many others.

When you realize that you are a faggot and don't give a fuck about anything any more you enter the stage of Real Metal fan. Now you listen to metal because you just don't give a fuck. entry level stuff like iron maiden

thrash like sodom or slayer

death metal and black metal(my angstiest phase)

A final point where i just started listening to the best of all genres.

Keep in mind that i was exploring different genres as well all the while(hardcore punk, noise rock, alt rock, indie, etc)
