Hey /mu/ why don't you feel bad about stealing music?
Don't you feel awful knowing you take money away from them? Imagine if you had a job/or if at your job someone took everything you did and you got no money for it? I'm not making a thread about how piracy is wrong, I just want to know why you don't feel bad about it.

If I've never heard a song before, there's a 0% I'm buying it. So I'm actually increasing their chances of me actually buying their record.

Maybe at first, but after a while you just stop giving a shit.

Because all money is actually debt taken from the National Reserve, idiot.
CDs aren't important and it only leads to more shit in our country if you're an amerifag.

Moralfags don't know artists make almost nothing from album sales, if you want to support someone go see him live. And if you absolutely want to buy a CD of said artists, you should still go see them live. Buy a CD while you're there, it's cheaper and the artist gets more.
    >> Anonymous 09/25/09(Fri)21:40 No.5196282
Yeah, but you wouldn't steal a car.
And you wouldn't steal a baby.
And you wouldn't shoot a policeman.
And you wouldn't shoot a policeman, shit in his hat, then mail it back to his widow.

So what makes spreading culture like was done in the Renaissance and folk music OK?

    >> Anonymous 09/25/09(Fri)21:51 No.5196322
Because piracy is expected in today's musical climate. If you get into it without thinking "hmm... I love music but not for money. I can deal with piracy" then you aren't fit to make music in the first place. Besides, with the coming armageddon in 2012 the internet will cease to exist and music will go back to a primal state. Enjoy your logcore guys.

yo they may make close to nothing from record sales but it's still better than nothing at all.

bottom line is if you would have bought a record instead of downloading it, you're ripping the artist off. i pirate as much as the next guy, but there's really no way around this, however much cognitive dissonance you wanna use to deal with this uncomfortable truth

    >>5196322
but this is true. unfair as it is, piracy is inevitable and musicians are gonna have to adapt.

no they fucking don't. learn what "literally" means before you go off on your cruise-control rage, faggot.

they do take a lot though, but they DID finance the recording on the album and a lot of the band's equipment, not to mention handling distribution & promotion.

i buy music because i care enough to have the physical copy in my collection, my stereo is not meant for digital means

i never pirate, i always find my most interesting music through purchases. independent record stores are the best. cheap cds and vinyl, and i don't mind paying money to listen to my music. it's a lot more interesting than seeing some shit movie that everyone says "you gotta see".

my end argument is that i buy music because i have a taste that allows me to do so responsibly. i scoff at piratefags and dismiss them as having a poor taste in music -- that or less love for music than i do
    >> !!ZQvtdpDYa/b 09/26/09(Sat)00:12 No.5197505

I honestly think that music should be free. I don't think that anything good has ever come from commercializing any art form. Yes, it's naive and idealistic to think this, but it also allows me to justify stealing.

yes but artists still receive some money, it's better than nothing

plus record labels aren't a fucking bad thing. sure, the major labels are dicks but the concept isn't inherently bad. they're the ones that provide the cash to make albums sound decent and not like they were recorded in a basement.

Why get a cd? These days, it's no longer about sound quality, unless you use something way ghetto, like [shudder] limewire. Seriously, someone tell me the positive side of cds. Is it for the artwork? I understand that it can be cool to physically 'have' the cd, but, since we're on moral arguments, cds pollute. Sure, not a whole lot, just the case, cd, booklet, box if you buy online which many people do, etc. It might not seem like a lot, but every i dunno, one in twenty people (in the word) has a cd collection. Also, the kind of plastic cds are made out of deteriorates extremely slowly (a lot slower than normal plastic).
Downloading cds does not make you a morally corrupt person, it simply means you feel that your money is better spent on things you need to spend money on.
Don't give me that 'starving artist needs your money' bullshit. Or that 'you're robbing your favorite bands!' That's fucking stupid. Yes, they are annoyed they're not getting more $, but they should realize, as some artists do, that cds are becoming obsolete. If you feel like supporting someone, buy a t shirt, and wear it, to show that support. Or spend money on gas and a concert ticket to go see them live. And don't think you have to give them money, either. There are a ridiculous amount of deserving charities in the world. The money that reaches the artist after passing through the middle mans, that would be enough to buy them, say a 6 pack of beer or two, would be enough to buy, like a goat or cow for a starving village. Or, alternatively, a lot of beer for yourself.
But, hey, if you enjoy your cd collection, I completely understand - they can be a lot more enjoyable than just downloading. I guess it depends on your mindset.

TL;DR: Don't be so fucking lazy. Read it.

a CD should only cost 3 dollars, big companies are taking most of the money and artists are getting close to nothing. They also own all the copyrights on the music. Really I'm like robinhood by not paying for music. I'm doing my part to force the music industry to revolutionize and go to how it should be.
