13 KB Still listen to radio anymore? Anonymous of College Park,MD 09/14/09(Mon)19:52 No.5044822
Since going to college I weaned myself off of radio since I discovered the existence of video game music soundtracks, anime music soundtracks, and real music, especially in the Hip-Hop and Rap Genre.

I don't listen to radio that much unless I have to.

The more I listen to radio at that point I realize that they rarely broadcast local music, they constantly broadcast the same top 20 singles over and over, and they play only singles of the albulm years after the actual album has already released.

Oh yes, even though there's the FCC safe harbor of indecent content (the seven dirty words), they still broadcast "clean" version of the lyrics.

Anyone still listen to radio? If not, why?

    Pic not related.

Only listening to the local culture station which consists of nothing but jazz, classical, audiobooks, book reviews and political and cultural discussions.

College radio stations and oldies stations aren't usually too bad. I enjoy the radio, pretty necessary when driving/riding for me.

Basically, listen to your college's radio station. They are more likely to at least play something not on the top 50 singles list. At your college, it sounds like Mindgrinder might be a pretty decent show.

Yeah, I know UMD has a college station.

At College Park most of the radio shows are either not interesting or on at like 4 in the morning.

When Sunday School of 99X stopped existing, and when Adam Carolla left LoveLine, radio was dead to me.

"Nights with Alice Cooper" is pretty great. He'll play Bob Dylan one second and then Bathory the next. The man really does just play whatever he feels like.

I still listen to the radio. If I'm in my car it's the local Columbus stations, but if it's in my boyfriend's car it's SiriusXM which is vastly superior.

Why? Because, quite frankly, I get sick of the same old shit after awhile and the radio lets me hear new stuff, and as long as I like the way it sounds, I could give a shit who made it or how they did, so "mainstream" music is just fine with me so long as I like it's sound.

Whoops, haven't actually answered the question.

The only times I do are when I'm in someone else's car. I haven't listened to the radio for music in a few years now.

I listen to the radio from time to see what is hip nowadays, then complain about how shitty it is.
    >> Anonymous 09/14/09(Mon)20:20 No.5045319
Only when I'm in the car.

And nine out of ten times I turn it on and hear "PA PA PA POKERFACE PAPA POKERFACE"

I listen to the local college radio.
A lot of the shit they play is still unedited, for example, they played "Police Truck" by the Dead Kennedys the other day and didn't even try to obscure the very obvious obscenities.

I used to listen to the radio whenever I was in the car. Fortunately I live in Lawrence, where we have a 24/7 college station (http://www.kjhk.org), which is usually good. But when it isn't, I would venture a sampling of what the kids are listening to. Most of it sucks.

KJHK does have a local show on Sunday afternoons. But this is all pretty much moot now because my CD player magically works now. I still scan the dial on occasion.
    >> Anonymous 09/14/09(Mon)21:44 No.5046870
I usually listen to public radio, or I'll throw on a dadrock station if I do feel like listening to music in the car.
    >> Anonymous 09/14/09(Mon)21:49 No.5046960
Radio is slowly but inevitable becoming obsolete. Not because of internet radio, but people are discovering that discovering shitty crappy music yourself can be more satisfying than listening passively to a rotation of singles.

In other words, "Hey, I just found this new band, Breaking Benjamin! I bought their album off iTunes!" is preferable to "I heard that Breaking Benjamin song on the radio today, it was pretty rockin'." Sadly, it's still Breaking Benjamin, not to mention that the former is often accompanied by "...and I saw on this gossip blog that Benjamin and his girlfriend were hanging out at a beach today KUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!"
