Rappers often have records with remixed/alternate version of songs that are only officially released on vinyl. Many instrumentals for rap songs are only available on the single version from the vinyl.

Off of the top of my head, Bobby Vinton has a version of his classic hit "Mr. Lonely" sung in Italian that is only available from the vinyl single.

Some of the those songs end up getting ripped and thrown onto the internet, but that is still lesser quality and less intimate.

I have the middling vinyl collection of someone in the hardcore scene for a few years (meaning some decent 7"s and a ton of unlistenable shit), who then became a grad student and spent his money on books instead. I envy fine vinyl collections, but I don't think I'll ever have the time or space to collect for the next few years.

I only buy vinyl if it's something that's out of print (and there is a LOT that is out of print) or if it's cheaper than getting it on CD. Buying vinyl for new releases is generally moronic. Everything is digitally recorded now, and while a few bands make sure the quality is better adapted for a vinyl release, everyone else presses their vinyl at the same quality as their CDs. Enjoy the "warmth" of your placebo effect, hipsters.

I bet like 95% of Hot Topic's fanbase didn't know who the fuck the Smiths were before 500 Days of Summer came out.

128 kbps is a temporary standard. As storage space improves, the average bitrate of a purchasable file will also be improved. iTunes has already begun releasing everything at 256 kbps, and many albums/songs that I've downloaded straight from labels' sites have been 256 or 320. I'm not worried about it.

What's wrong with Hot Topic? It's just a store. Most people who go there are unbearable, but some of their merchandise is alright. I got an MGMT shirt and a cactus that says 'free hugs' from there once. The latter has gotten me much attention from girls.

128kbps isn't even standard anymore. In web rips, it's become the exception and not the rule, while on the iTunes store, a lot of their MP3s are 192 and higher.

But nobody should be buying MP3s directly anyway. Try bringing your shitty early-era eMusic MP3s back or 128k, DRM-crippled MP3s back to apple and see where it gets you. It only makes sense to buy physical media if you're actually putting down money to own the songs.
