What's the /mu/ stance on Neutral Milk Hotel? I'm sure you'll think I'm trolling you, but I come from /r9k/ and saw some references to the band from /mu/ (the day /mu/ wasn't working or something) and got curious about it.
I have a feeling that I'll get saged and trolled...

it's an inside joke/meme here and any threads about it are assumed to be trolls. come here for like 10 minutes and you'll see a few threads already

A lot of people like it and others troll with it and hate it.

    They're great.

I'll give you a serious opinion about it. I actually enjoy NMH's 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.'
    >> Anonymous 09/08/09(Tue)19:45 No.4951687
I'm not really a fan of indie but I like it.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/09(Tue)19:45 No.4951692
    They're great
its a shame they only made 1 album
    >> Anonymous 09/08/09(Tue)19:46 No.4951696
it started off as a meme/inside joke and then a bunch of newfags actually liked it >.<

basically /mu/ trolled itself with a shitty indie band and now it won't die

I've honestly enjoyed Neutral Milk Hotel since before I started coming here. I came here last night out of curiosity, actually. I expected it to be filled with neckbeards with absolutely fuckterrible taste and metal.
I was pleasantly surprised, even though people seem to hate NMH for some reason. I can't quite tell myself.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/09(Tue)19:50 No.4951752
It really is a great album. Though there are a few people who can't get past the vocals/theme of it, which is fair enough. Then there are others who mock it, which I couldn't care less about either.

Thankfully I discovered NMH before finding the online abortion that is /mu/.

My only regret about its meme use is that it's become so synonymous with bad jokes/misguided hatred that alot of people won't give it a chance, or simply avoid it altogether.

They made one previous to 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea', but to be honest it isn't worth checking out.

You know, they existed and had fans before /mu/ went apeshit over the fact that someone on pitchfork liked it.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/09(Tue)19:53 No.4951795
They were a really good band. Although they used the most entry level of chord progressions, literally the stuff you learn your 1st week of guitar lessons they made up for with other instrumentation. I dont see how Mangum's voice is unlistenable, I think people are just looking for reasons to hate the band because of their hype.

My favorite album is On Avery Island. Why do you say that? It's a masterpiece.

ITAOTS is a very enjoyable album.

A couple of their songs are good.
A couple are just terrible "artsy" stuff, IMO.

    Please.
You're probably one of the same 'newfags' who has a little shitty iPod Nano, with a collection of songs that don't exceed 192k.

Or worse, you're one of the self-proclaimed 'oldfags', who've just discovered FLAC and still spam this board for what.cd invites.

Don't go calling people newfags when you know you fail just as hard.

Neutral Milk Hotel is a good band, but I don't think they are some kind of Indie Beatles or something.

Yes it is. It's pretty different, ITAOTS is more... bright, whereas OAI is very fuzzy and distorted, yet they keep the melody throughout both albums uniquely.
