  • Attention 4chan extension/user script/archive developers: Some time in the next few days, we'll be rolling out a complete HTML rewrite of the imageboards.
The design will remain the same, but the underlying HTML/CSS is completely new, and validates HTML5/CSS3 (with some tweaks to account for cross-browser compatibility).

Please visit this thread to read more about the changes, and here to preview the code.

As a regular user, these changes should not affect you. You will need to update your 4chan browser extensions/user scripts when their maintainer updates them to be compatible with the changes.
The official 4chan Chrome extension will be ready to go when the updates happen, and 4chan X should be ready soon. We'll post more details on the day of the migration!

I've been here for a while, and I just listened the album Neutral Milk Hotel - 1998 - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.

So, what's the deal with this?

It's a good album, I recognize it, and the band sounds good too, but I can't see the reason why most of you guys at /mu/ love this album, when you also love Ok Computer, Fleet Foxes, King Crimson that are notoriously "better" than this NMH album.

Are the lyrics the remarkable of the album? It's just the part that I didn't pay a lot of attention yet.

I'm really not trolling. I just wonder this and I'm trying to be as honest as I could.

    God save the /mu/sic.

I've always liked ITAOTS the more I listen to it, but to be fair I only put it on every few months and I'm not a /mu/tant shitposter about it. Maybe try it again?

Unlike King Crimson and OK Computer where the instruments paint the "environment" and the lyrics provide context and bring the song along, the lyrics and vocal melody really are meant to be the focus of the album. The acoustic guitar instrumentation is really just dumbed down folk, and that's where the format comes from.

The impression parts of the instrumentation come from the "background" instruments, like the horns, musical saws, etc.

Speaking of which, even if you don't like Neutral Milk, check out Julian Koster, one of the bands instrumentalists. I think he is what happens if you take acid hundreds of times. He's a colorful fellow:

It paints an atmosphere of nostalgia and sadness. It's all in the vocal delivery, melody and lyrics, enhanced by the lofi recording and accented by flares of sparse instrumentation. it's not really anything special, but sensitive types seem to love it the most.

Honestly, I think there are several albums that do what this album does, and better. Daniel Johnston's 1990, Nick Drake's Pink Moon, Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom, Joanna Newsom's Have One on Me, etc. It is a good album though, very melodic and catchy, I've only listened maybe five or six times as a whole but I have most of the songs memorised and can easily play them on guitar spontaneously.

The thing about me singing about Christ; I'm not saying "I love you Christianity." I'm not saying "I love all the fucked-up terrible shit that people have done in the name of God." And I'm not preaching belief in Christ. It's just expression. I'm just expressing something I might not even understand. It's a song of confusion, it's a song of hope, it's a song that says this whole world is a big dream-- and who knows what's gonna happen.

This album is good because of the lyrics. Read them, and then listen to the album again. When you understand exactly what he's saying, the emotional quality of his voice really shines and is a lot more moving than if you just hear the emotions with no comprehension. My 2 cents anyway.

I relisten to music I like, you fucking retard. If it takes you more than one listen to "get" the immense simplicity of ITAOTS then you are terrible at listening to music and almost certainly know nothing about composition.

I like ITAOTS but I didn't have to listen to it several times to understand that it was just melodic indie rock with stream-of-consciousness imagery. I read this thread just now and there's a guy claiming about how it took several listens to get past the "I love you jesus christ" part. Not THAT'S retardation. Not only does that have nothing to do with the accessibility of the music, but several listens shouldn't even do anything if you have an innate bias against those words. If anything you enjoy the music in spite of the lyrics, and that shouldn;t take more than one listen to udnerstand.

I could appreciate ITAOTS after I listened to it several times. The first time I listened I thought it was absolute shit. Thanks jackass if I would have never chose to listen to it again I would have missed one of the most magical musical experiences of my life.

I myself never judge albums on my first listen because I tend to get bored during it. Hell, Kid A nearly put me to sleep the first time I heard it, but I was golden by my third listen. I know myself well enough to never judge on first listen, unless I absolutely, unequivocally hated what I was hearing.

A valid opinion. There's a little more to ITAOTS, but not much, so you would be justified in calling it bad. I enjoy it, myself.

It's catchy and fun to sing along to.

    It's also pretty deep.

Not SUPER popular in the mainstream (even though yes blah every indiefag on the planet knows about it)

    Several styles are represented.

    Easily interpreted in several ways.

Then you are both bad at listening to music. Need I even say it? You get "bored" listening to music you eventually like on the third listen? You call yourself a music fan? Listening to new music is always an exciting and interesting experience.

Can you even remember why you thought ITAOTS was shit the first time, first guy?

    >>24654547
It's more than that you dumb fuck. The vacuum cleaners aren't "in the background", they're part of the dynamic whorling wall of sound. Most of the time they ARE the melodies. The whole album is about structure and texture and chaos and simplicity.

    Personally, I'd say

    Loveless > Kid A > OKC > ITCOTCK > ITAOTS > MPP

But Loveless is best /mu/core. I agree with you there.

No, there's much more to ITAOTs than the lyrics. It's one of the best indie pop records ever made. I'm not a native english speaker and I've always loved it. I was trying to say that anyone implying that the lyrics are at the forefront are misguided. They aren't.

You have no idea! I've tried lube, but the potato skin still leaves me raw. I didn't get it on the first try though, so I just keep on a-chafin'. It's starting to feel good though. My prostate is starting to enjoy its potato massage. Even though the bloody, ky rectal drip can be a bit alarming, I've found it can be quite envigorating. Now I've opened my butthole to a whole world of possibilities!

I get bored with something I lack familiarity with. Once I get a runthrough of an album, then I can start to really appreciate it. Still, I didn't hate ITAOTS on first listen. It was okay, actually. I don't hate most things on first listen, really. It just almost never blows me away. There are exceptions, but they're rare.

That's perfectly valid and is what I was trying to say. If your critical capacities aren't completely fucked then you can tell if something is good or not on first lsiten, even if the lack of familiartiy can make it difficult to follow. If you hate something first listen, like, you genuinely dislike it, why the hell would you listen again? Have you ever re-listened to anything that you didn't think showed promise on first listen? Well, have you?

Can't say that I have, but I'm not nearly as judgmental as most of /mu/. The only album I can think of that I've heard in recent memory that I hated was Swans' White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity. Absolutely hated it. Funny, considering Children Of God was one that blew me away on first listen.

You're not allowing for the possibility of human error. It can be hard to hear every aspect of one song on the first listen let alone all of the songs on an album. Then you may or may not even realize the aim of the album. Relistening shouldbea healthy part of any music enthusiast's agenda.

    >usually get bored on the first listen

If you USUALLY get bored, then you're listening to way too much shitty music. The only time something bores me and it deserves another listen is if its boring me because I'm not in the mood for that style at the time, but I actually recognize it'll be good when I'm in the mood for it.

I don't get why someone who likes music would take pride in listening to something just one time, unless they absolutely hated it. If it shows promise, give it some time to grow on you. How hard is that? I find that some of the most rewarding albums are ones that take multiple listens to appreciate.
