This is one of the primary reasons why people bitch about "useless" philosophy degrees. People go into philosophy not realizing what it is until it's too late and they graduate with a 3.0 GPA and no references.

Gen. Psych classes trick kids into thinking all they have to do is make up some bullshit and say "oh, this person has such and such a disorder." When they realize it's actually a science and that they actually know how to work with statistics (usually late sophomore/early junior year) that is when they either switch to English/Humanities degrees or drop out.

Naw. Academic philosophy involves mathematical logic and analytical thinking. Many areas of philosophy have just as much rigor as mathematics or science. I guess you can still do that while high, though.

Also not entirely true. Once you've studied enough math and have a decent general education, you come to realize that philosophy and mathematics intersect at many points.

Not really. Although there is a philosophy of mathematics, all you really have to do is adopt a kind of fictionalism and you're in the same position as anyone else

I don't know why math majors are so obsessed with proving that their major is somehow the only path to success-- generally, I've seen most math majors make it to midlevel and stall out because they don't have the liberal arts background to really lead/manage/move forward in a direction where there are not actual "answers" so much as there are "approaches".

Many of those disciplines can use math from time to time, but by and large, issues are more related to the core competency in the major, with supplemental input from math.

About 60% of my work involves analysis of ideas, about 25% requires execution, and about 15% relies on using numbers data to optimize process or to make some inferences.

But it's not like analyzing statute is really math oriented and it's not like I can't tell who is the best bidder without having calculus knowledge-- it's pretty simple stuff.

However, we do dislike philosophers. Why? You just gave the answer:

When I started my philosophy degree there were a lot of half and halfers (they studied philosophy and something else) who clearly had no clue what the fuck philosophy was. Then there were the even bigger tourists that took a philosophy module as an outside class and they spent the entire semester fucking moaning about it.

I guess most of them never actually read a work of philosophy. I can only assume they just watched the Matrix and read a couple of books like Life of Pi and thought that it would all be as revelatory and self actualising as that kind of stuff.

It's pretty funny when they are given someone like Kant to read and they are a bit like "How am I supposed to read this shit?".

    >every single person that has tried to teach me math threw up their hands and gave up in frustration
    >completely avoid going to college because I'll be forced to take math classes that will ultimately fuck up my GPA

I can write like holy shit and can grasp abstract concepts fairly easily, but I can NOT do math. I actually have to have a pen and paper with my to do a lot of addition and subtraction, that's how bad I am.

I just can't picture numbers and I can't assign meaning to them. Pretty sure I'm a little retarded or something.

because most people who study philosophy are pretentious pseudo intellectuals.

But I do agree that philosophy is a valuable course and should be taken by all science and math majors.

    Hey, mathfags, quick question:

I'm 19 in community college (californiafag here, we use this as a stepping stone to real universities) and I don't want to fritter my education away in the social science building. Assuming I've got rudimentary knowledge of math, how fucked would I be if I attempted my prerequisites for Civil Engineering?

I'd be going for a bachelors at a half-decent state uni.

To be fair, as a philosophy major, "How the fuck am I supposed to read this shit" is the reaction I give to half the philosophers I encounter.

I always find it funny that the line between pseudo intellectual and an actual intellectual is just who has the qualifications.

If you don't have a PhD and you decide to read Schopenhauer then you are clearly be pretentious right? Who could possibly have a genuine interest in philosophy unless they had a piece of paper ratified by academics?

You don't get the same stigma for being an amateur in other areas of life. If you decide to start climbing mountains and so you go and buy the gear and start climbing small mountains people don't say that you are some kind of pseudo-mountaineer they recognise the fact you are a beginner and they respect it.

They might make fun of you if you just bought the gear and never climbed a mountain but in a subject like philosophy you will always be a pretentious fake until you are a professor.

Math is all about thinking outside the box and problem solving. Philosophy is similar. Why someone wants to shit talk about math or philosophy is absolutely crazy.
