Wootmaster is back, and things seem to be picking up.

You can find the current Music Theory lessons here:

Showcase:
>Fluttershy the Tree: https://soundcloud.com/djefr0

Want your stuff showcased? Feel free to pop in, show us your work, and request it to be placed here.

Catch the T:EM/P/O radio show, hosted by Wootmaster:

There is a project group looking for instrumentalists, if interested:
Note: we are not affiliated with them, so all questions regarding this must go to them.

Guidelines:

● T:EM/P/O is an acronym that stands for "Thread: Equestrian Musicians/Poets/Other".
● Hence the thread's title, any art in the form of acoustic, written, or otherwise is welcome.
● These threads often have been a hub for musical discussions; good place to get your music reviewed.
● More people than just musicians are welcome, so don't be deterred if you don't have any music to show.

Oy, new thread.

For some odd reason, my song has like, one hundred and something plays on soundcloud. How the fuck did that happen?

Anyway, I'm still working on mastering Instruments in C, and recording raps and shiz.

If you have a song you want me to play on the show, post it here. Also, if there is a like a master list of soundclouds for the group, that would come in extremely handy.

Finally, a friend of mine in the Houston Brony group did the best song about Derpy I've ever heard. Give it a listen:

>>
>>11884977
These are the ones that were listed in the last OP (excluding mine):

>Crazy Diamond: https://soundcloud.com/leltronica
>Fluttershy the Tree: https://soundcloud.com/djefr0

And of course, the different one in this OP:

There are others (trippers, Mad God's, Protocat etc), but I don't like posting soundcloud links without permission. I can message each one of them and see if they're interested. I'll get back o you with a full list.

> I really like your stuff, woot. your damn good, and this is coming from an anon who hates rap

My aim is to give this fandom a rapper who isn't cringeworthy, and why you can listen to even if you despise rap. To hear that you like it puts a smile on my face, and encourages me to do more.

who knows. Might be at bronycon one day rapping about flooding Rainbow Dash's uterus with my funk spunk.
>>
>>11886201
Thats why I am quite a fan of you, your raps tell it like it is in the fandom without all that fake-drama they try to stir up and without it being cheesy as hell. You're like the fandom's equivalent of the love-satyr of Childish Gambino and Lupe Fiasco.

Hmm, I might look at it, but it doesn't seem like something I would use since I have this (anne frankly I enjoy this thread), and I'm not really a "fandom musician".

I may consider trying to send people their way to help them be heard though, but that would pretty much be it.
Hell, for some reason, the idea of a "partnership" almost comes to mind..but it's nothing I would seriously consider.
>>
>>11903173

Well we can always just inform people who are of notable talent from these threads of its existence, maybe stick it at the bottom of the OP as "Want to help your self promotion?" sticker attached to it.

I don't think there's a whole lot they can offer us really. They aren't going to handout links to a 4chan thread. Too many negative connotations, too much shit for them to deal with when someone gets trolly in our threads and starts abusing everyone etc etc.

Indeed part of their user base (and as you mention administration team) will cross with ours, but I don't think it would be prudent or sound in a promotional/professional sense for them to be directing people to our threads.

In truth I would prefer they didn't, I like our culture, I like our system. Loose, relaxed, simple. If TEMPO were publicized so much for any great length of time we would end up with a billion tripfriends (not saying that tripping is bad, I understand its a convenience of conversation thing).

With them would come numerous inflated opinions and egos that would be easily hurt by the flippancy that creeps into our threads. Our critique is rather mild and mushy as it is, but usually at least one anon will give a down to earth commentary and sound piece of advice most of the time.

I dunno, I probably just sound like a le 4chan el1tist but truly I just don't want dozens of the general fandom coming here. I like the personalities (anonymous and otherwise) that frequent TEMPO.
>>
>>11905291
I think for a more... larger environment something like myllitleremix should be used anyway, there was also that other one that used the same forum template as dubstepforum.
>>
>>11905375
let me properly phrase that,
for a larger brony audience people should go to those places anyway
>>
>>11905375

I've not heard of either of those things but I will agree with you that this is not a great format for massive amounts of discussion and deliberation across multiple topics, owing to the fact that there's no method for compartmentalization of topics like recording or mixing or writing or shitposting.

We just come here and share music, share ideas, share critique and occasionally make contacts. "

It's good.
>>
>>11905420

Out of curiosity, am I alone in this line of thinking?

Do any of the regulars wanna see more of the general fandom start frequenting TEMPO?

Does anyone want to see this thread evolve/grow to the point where it needs to be taken elsewhere, to another forum?

I know this is slightly off topic. Appreciate your indulgence.

The reason there are so many electronic tracks is because electronic music is BY FAR the easiest to make. The bass is the kick really. I used the same kick from the original song, heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=DuFUtL8zUAk#t=108s

Are you sure? it sounds like a filter kick to me. Just saying, that I'd add some base to 1:00 and 2:40, sidechain it, maybe fade it out, but still have it.

After one listen, I have to say: really nice, man. My only criticism so far would be the measures highlighted in red. Two things
>Parallel octaves
Even though they are on the second beat of each measure, they're still going to be noticeable
>Octave by leap
If you're going to do octaves, try and have the leaping in the bass, and have the upper voice step into it, so that way it doesn't stand out as much, but since this is a canon and the bass is the restatement, it's kind of hard to change the bass

My recommendation to fix this little problem is to change that D in the upper line to an F, and just have parallel thirds throughout those measures. I don't think you have to worry about overlapping since they're not in the same octave. (unless, of course, that's the sound you were wanting)

Overall, I really liked it. It felt like a true canon, and it had a nice motion, almost like a dance. I think it could have used a bit more motion, like more of the 8th note with two 16th notes motif, but that comes down to personal taste. I can do a further analysis tonight, but I have to get ready for work.

hey this is really nice, good job canon-anon!

I don't know if you are aware of this but you hit two false relations in the last four bars: one is in bar 17 (F flat in the soprano and then F sharp in the tenor) and in bar 19 (C sharp in the bass and then C flat in the soprano)...they always taught me that those are bad...but here I don't see why, since I don't hear any problem acoustically, so maybe it's ok to have them

(there are some parallel fourths and octaves; I could list them but maybe that's just nipticking!)

That said, really good work, keep this up
>>
>>11910666
Are the octaves there really considered bad? They are separated by a sixth going to a fifth on the intervening downbeat. The lower part leaps down a fifth while the upper one is moving by step. I think the advice in Fux's Gradus was that a leap of a third is too little to save a bad parallel but greater than a third is ok.
Great eye though.

There is another parallel octave but it's created through part crossing after the last voice comes in.
I've read conflicting things on whether or not that is ok. I remember W.S. Rockstro writing that this was good but he may have meant it only for vocal music specifically, I don't remember. I think it's probably ok because it wouldn't sound like a parallel if you were to play the parts on different instruments.

About octave leaps... Sure they are more characteristic in the bass but this is 4 parts in the same range and they have to move apart from each other somehow.
The only real rules I followed about octave leaps is they should always be on a weaker beat, best with any large leaps, really, and to let the preceding and following notes be in the same octave as the leap.
In any sort of counterpoint where there is exchange of parts like this leapiness is probably more acceptable than in a more monophonic melody and bassline sort of style.

Thanks for listening I appreciate it.

>>11910333
Cmon pohno you don't have to be a master contrapuntist to say whether it sounded good or not.
I might do a version with different instrument samples though, thanks for the suggestion.
>>
>>11898417
Something about that sine bass sounds out of tune, try adding maybe a little more of another waveform in it to make the pitch more clear? Otherwise, what pohnonono said

>>11905105
>>11905051
Ohhhh you guys. I couldn't disagree with you more. Once you depend on any art form for income, it kills the fun in it. Others' perception of you becomes hyperimportant, and you get to such a level of worrying about technique that you forget why you picked music in the first place: for fun. And the millions of people writing? I wouldn't say millions, I'd say maybe about maybe a single million are making money off of music. And almost all of them are there because of networking and politics, not talent. Believe me, almost all of my family has a degree in music, and none of us are performing for money. NONE

>>11906108
I'd actually like more people here, and probably more people to help review too. I've actually had aspirations of making this into it's own website, but it's not entirely essential to me that it happen. That's why I haven't made it happen.
>>
>>11912547
Parallel fourths between upper parts are OK as far as I know. A lot of progressions would be very limited in motion if you didn't allow them.

The f natural against f# is on a 16th moving by step so it's just a passing tone. The second one you pointed out is more questionable because it's between the outer parts.. You're right it's bad but cross relations aren't something I worry about unless it's 2 parts. In 4 parts I don't think it's as bad. I'm saying subjectively as a taste thing, not an established rule so much.
Thank you for listening again.
>>
>>11913032
Just a stylistic opinion, this needs more rooting with a lower bass, it needed more spread of range. It always sounded like it was going to add that lower voice but then never did. I also thought it was 2 voices the entire time because of this lack of range
>>
>>11913206
I guess parallel fourths are ok if used with a third below, like a chord in first inversion
>>

I agree and that is why I hate unison canons. It's way too limiting. All the parts are in the same range because they are all spinning out of the same line on exactly the same notes. I'm just working on learning it because I feel like it's important to be able to do.

Another thing I should have said about Flutter Tree's comment about it not sounding like 4 voices. Well, by the time the last voice comes in there are so many unisons that most of the time it is just 3 voices. They aren't between the same pairs of voices from beat to beat so they're not parallels though. It's really just unavoidable with such a restricted range.

Oh and ignore those parallel 7ths (!) in the second to last bar in the lower staff, that was a notation error and wasn't in the audio file. The soprano is unison with the alto on A and goes up to Bb, not D on the neighbor figure thing. I'll make another revised version tomorrow.

>>
>>11917933
>You really don't have to do an analysis, by the way.
But I want to! It's so much fun. The only things I found questionable were the in last two measures of the repeated section. There's a diminished 5th (C#-G) that moves to a perfect 5th (D-A), which could normally be overridden if there are parallel 10ths in the bass and soprano, but usually try to have Dim 5ths resolve to 3rds. Also, in the last measure in the repeated section, there's that leap from B to E, and the voices overlap, and I understand why you did it, but it's still questionable. Besides those two little things, this is a great piece
>>
>>11917060
Damn. this shit hit hard. dlded.
>>
>>11919564
Well if that dim. fifth resolved the right way it would double the leading tone. About the diminished fifth leap in last bar, it's at a cadence so i figured is ok. It doesn't sound bad at least.
Ok to bed for real for real.
>>
>>11919679
Gotcha. Night, man
>>
>>11919679
Wow I must be tired. your problem there is just the size of the leap and the unavoidable overlapping, both e and b are flat so not diminished. Um... my defense to that is if Bb went up a fourth to Eb it would cross the soprano and change the melody, and I wanted the particular up 6, down 7, up 6, up 1 figure there. It's really a sort of compound line and would be better split across two voices but canon.
I see another notation error now, In the C clef version at that very part, wrote an F instead of A, lol.
>>
>>11919469
Nah I looked it up apparently ableton can only use certain VSTs in 32 or 64 bit and you need a 3rd party app for the rest of them

>Others' perception of you becomes hyperimportant, and you get to such a level of worrying about technique that you forget why you picked music in the first place: for fun.

Let me stop you there. If you care this much about how your music is received (or how anything you create is received) then stop creating everything right now. Because you're right in saying that once you get a fanbase everyone will have an opinion and not all of them will be friendly. When you start to experiment and broaden your horizons you're gonna piss a lot of people off. If you can't deal with this, stop creating art.

There's nothing wrong with making music others will enjoy, but if your first thought during the creative process is: "will people like this? does this sound like something I would make as an artist?" or anything like that, you're doing it wrong.

> I wouldn't say millions, I'd say maybe about maybe a single million are making money off of music.

In excess of millions of people are making money off music. They might not all be famous, they might not all get their name in the news or do a tour or play a show, but multiple millions of people are making money either writing, playing, producing or commentating on music. Your family is not a microcosm of the music industry at large.

They've been welcome all along, it's just that we don't see many at all.
It's the same thing with poets; they're just as welcome as everyone else, but it's so rare that we see any poems posted that people tend to forget that.

But yeah, this is the guy who started these: >>11900439

I've just been hosting them for him since I've been here, kind of just organizing things, and trying to build upon what he's started (hence the theory doc with Tree, the showcase, the last bullet of the guideline, etc).

You know what happened? They were trying to make a point with this album. They tried to protest about how music had gotten too sampled and digital, that we needed to add in a more human element. Which is good in theory, but they fucked it up because instead of being humanly creative with electronics, they put out generic disco stuff. Also what the hell was with that twang voice fucking everywhere? I hate twang...

Got a quick question: what's a good program for recording, and I guess mixing? I just realized that I won't be able to do all I want on finale, so I need a program that will allow me to do recordings, and is compatible with finale
>>
>>11939659
I don't know what's compatible with finale, but a free one for audio recording would be audacity. It has some editing/mixing features, but I haven't used them.

Or are you going for MIDI recordings?
>>
>>11939659
Also, you should try Sibelius for notation software.

In my experience, I've always found myself preferring Sibelius over Finale.

It should be noted that I used both only for brief amounts of time...
>>
>>11939694
I only want to use MIDI when I have to. I'd much rather record instruments
>>
>>11939747
I've worked with Finale enough to trust it. Haven't tried Sibelius, though
>>
>>11938310
Ok... Here we go.

>0:27
You need to put in a bass line here.

>0:41
Some chord stabs playing on the upbeat would sound nice.

>0:48
Your drum beat looks like this:
..|...|...|...|.

It should sound more simple, maybe like this:
..| ..| ..|...|

>0:55
Nice drop, but take those top instruments out at the beginning and re tune the bass to fit the other voices. It's pretty distracting.

>2:30
Put another bass line here.

>2:58
Put some snare drum on the up beat.

>4:34
Make this the end of the song.

All in all, I like what you're trying to do. although you do need to work on some things, I think it will sound great in the end.
>>
>>11933507
Good sir.

This is sexy... A little cheap sounding, but sexy. It would sound a lot better if there were some more interesting synth effects.

Also, I really like what you did with the reverb.
>>
>>11939805
I just like the feel of Sibelius more, ya know? Again, I've only used each of them for a little bit, but Sibelius feels more...polished

Also, what exactly did you mean you're looking for something compatible with Finale? Like, a specific audio format, or...?
>>
>>11940042
Some program that will allow me to transfer files over with ease, and still allow me to make changes to a file once it's transferred.
>>

>>
>>11941320
It's pretty much perfect as it is.

The only issues that I have are poor sound choices

I can't really explain to people what I have in mind when sounds come into play, so if you want to send me some midi files, I could show you what I mean.

Of course, that would technically make it a co-op.
>>

The drum beat needs to me more prominent, the drums need to be a little less MIDI sounding. The progression needs to be less cliche

The whole thing is written well, but this type of music has been done since the 70's.

Plus it was my first time using that noise maker VST and I STILL have not read any manual for ableton, so I think Im on the right track.
>>
>>11944026
>Is there anything else wrong with it?
Its your music and if you are happy/ totally fed up with having to deal with it than Id say its fine. I love that crunchy synth in the intro and the lead synth riding the quarter on the top. Id say fix the wubs at 56. Like maybe edit the envelope and change the rate slightly and raise the cutoff a tad bit? Or make the attack more prominent. It felt more like a wave of sludge rather than an acctually bass. Try and get the accents on the beat you want. I think the secod part you had a more prominent bass. Also at the end maybe add a single run up the scale with the lead to sort of resolve the song, it kinda felt like it just jumped off at the end.

This often can happen do to problematic VSTs, unfortunately, not only can they crash you daw, they can permanently mess up your project, often by not letting you open it anymore. The best way to avoid this is to not use these plugins, or not to save with these plugins active. (I found that bypassing them works fine, but bypass with the daw's bypass function, no include the plugin itself).

>>11942496
Sounds a little like a quarter sine wave with noise, I can assume it was achieved by wave shaping a softened square wave into a quarter square sine wave, and it's low-pass filtered of course, but I can't check at the moment, you should just download it and check the waveform in the scope, it's pretty clean.

>auto bypassing snapping
Lemme guess, you're trying to (re)align either notes in piano roll, or patterns in your playist, and FL keeps snapping it too far/not enough in one direction? That can come from untimely MIDI inputs, odd note placement, and well..seemingly randomly, really. Basically, you tricked FL into thinking the bar/step/beat lines are elsewhere.

Well, you have to basically reset the snapping rules, which can be done very simply.

When trying to extend/move a note/pattern, you can just hold ALT and it temporarily sets (as long as you're holding ALT) the snapping to the lowest possible setting; it puts it to a point where snapping seems to be disabled, and you have free movement. Jest set the note/pattern where you want, and release ALT, and it will automatically reset the snapping to the proper parameters.
You should also make sure the snap settings are correct.

Is it this, or is it acting like ALT is always pressed down?
>>
>>11954288
It's acting like alt is always pressed down. Basically, it's not snapping at all.

G3 intro + Ableton
The only part not totally crap is the "plan a party with Pinkie Pie" part.
What think?
>>
>>11954330
This is going to sound stupid, but sometimes FL snapping thing can reset to "none" up under the magnet symbol, which is the same as holding ALT down.

Again, not trying to insult your intelligence, but check both of the snapping locations; both the one on the top that's always there (the control panel), and the one that's on the very thin bar, right below the control panel. You may have accidentally clicked it and hit "none". Again, not to insult your intelligence, but just make sure "none" isn't selected...

That's all the conventional methods I can think of, other than just closing/reopening, or even mashing alt or some shit.
>>
>>11954582
Yea, I just had to reselect "line". I'm still trying to learn all of FL Studio so I hadn't thought to check the magnet or whatever.

seriously guys, try a synth or just a sample editor in which you can draw your own waveforms and use them instead of your synth, you'll save up as much time as with a complex wavetable synth, and you wont draw mathematically precise waveforms, that's as analogue as it gets... sort of
>>
>>11954558
So...much...distortion....it actually bothers my ears.

I have nothing to say regarding the glitched (if that's the right term), other than in some places it felt unnecessary, or overdone really...

I suppose it's more listenable than the actual theme, but the amount of distortion bothers my ears, and I'm not even wearing headphones.

What do you need to know?

The most recent things I have learned is how to use FL Studio as a live recording device.

Say you have 3 mics, one to a singer, one to a guitarist, one to a drummer. Each mic can be routed to a different input track in the mixer, and then you can record all three simultaneously, no extra hardware needed (As long as you have usb adapters for the mics). It's pretty cool.

Every DAW worth mentioning comes with this packaged.

For a decent, relatively cheap live recording these days simply get a DAW, a multitrack interface with around a dozen or so input channels, and a dozen or so mics.

Say you use 10 inputs micing up instruments and drums (in the studio, you can easily use up to 10 for every instrument), you then can set yourself 1-2 "room" or "hall" mics that capture wider set and crowd sound.

Live album quality can easily be achieved for <$1000. Compare this to ten years ago when it would have been something like 1000 bucks to hire a guy for the show, who would have brought $10k-$15k worth of gear and charged you for any inconveniences, overtime or post-production work.

Yes. All. The fucking. Time. I might be the worse live performer on the planet.

But when I get out there...I don't think of the audience, or where I'm at. I focus on the music and the feeling behind it. I just pretend it's me talking to myself. You HAVE to be confident that what you're doing is the HOTTEST SHIT ON THE PLANET. There is no room for second-guessing yourself.

That's how I get by, usually. Worrying comes later.

If you spend a lot of time making music electronically expect to be pleasantly surprised frequently about what your DAW can do for live recording and spot mixing. Sending out balanced lines to headphones for guitar players so they can hear themselves over set-volume drums, ticking the volume up on the metronome in the drummers ears, on the spot mixing out of harsh frequencies and so forth.

>power of these programs

Yup. They're fuckin' brilliant.
>>
>>11960829
I feel confident in the tricks I've learned so far for electronic music production, but now I'm actually starting to DJ live, and I feel like a fish out of water.

I need to learn how to use that little mixer board they always hook you into, the one with all the knobs and shit. That's what I need to master next.
>>
>>11960960

Think of it like a graphical EQ, except you control the gain on every single frequency manually with a dial.

It gives you across the set control on cutting and boosting lows mids and highs, at it's most base. At it's most complex, reverbs, dynamics and a thousand other things I don't understand either. You know that thing every DJ does during their live mix where the music goes really distant just before a repeat of the main melody of any track? It sends the crowd wild because they know the music is going to come back with a fucking huge amount of bass. Everyone puts their hands up and gets ready to jump around like a fucking parrot.

All they're doing is applying a massive low and mid filter manually and then cranking it back the other way on the down beat of the first bar of the melody.
>>
>>11961044
>All they're doing is applying a massive low and mid filter manually and then cranking it back the other way on the down beat of the first bar of the melody.

I noticed this! It makes it go all swooshy and stuff.

>Think of it like a graphical EQ, except you control the gain on every single frequency manually with a dial.

I see. That explains it very clearly. Thank you for all the help dude. I feel a little bit more confident about performing live now.
>>
>>11961108

No substitute for practice. I've never DJ'd a day in my life so there's not much more I can tell you.

There's plenty of cheap small and medium size mixing boards out there, and the vast majority of them you can interface with your DAW.

Save yourself up a few bucks and buy board for yourself and start tearing every piece of music apart you can get your hands on in realtime. You'll be slicing live sets apart in no time.

Since I don't actually know how guitar is supposed to be played and thus have no idea how to translate the notes I jotted down into tabs or something playable at all, I'll just go full synth for this. It's barely started anyway, we'll see where it goes I guess.

I appreciate it, believe me. But I think I need to illustrate how much of a novice I am at this.

Pic related is the notes I mentioned in >>11941659; the highlighted sections are the two tracks shown in >>11959529. As you can see, they're just lines. They're really more to reinforce the memory of the melody in my head than to actually try to convey it. Their only distinguishing features are their length (of course indicating the length of the note) and their vertical position relative to each other, which indicates when one note is higher or lower than another. I don't even know what specific notes they're supposed to be because I'm not practiced enough to play-by-ear as it were, so I'm just taking shots in the dark in Ableton and seeing what seems to sound right.
The only instruments I really actually understand are piano and drum kits.

I know how to read sheetmusic, it's just that when a melody pops into my head, I have no idea what the notes for it are and have to do trial & error until I find something satisfactory.

That sort of issue gets really obvious with cymbals, because it sounds like they keep popping. I don't know whether it's just physics that it doesn't mix into the waveform, or whether it's a bouncing issue on daws, but it seems that it happens whenever I don't filter out inaudibly high frequencies

stretch out the cable, they roll back in, slowly like invertebrate creatures
freak the fuck out, escorted by the bad sounding mic someone looping several times
wake up, still hear that clipping, booming, mic in my head

You're the only guy I know that has nightmares based on sound production and hardware.

You know you're in too deep when...

Don't worry, I had a nightmare where I was DJing at like a CD store, and I barely know how to DJ. All I've done is fiddle around with VDJ free

DJ Wootmaster! I can fuckin' call you that, now, it feels great.
I really liked that song you dropped in here a few minutes ago.
Not much can make me feel nostalgic in a good way, but that incidentally pulled it off.

Anyhow. I'm home. I haven't uploaded anything good in eons.
So I'm gonna cover All Level's "Fluttershy's Lament", and slam the wammy-bar in homage to Sim Gretina.
Gonna re-open a dream of mine, and see if I can't have a decent version of it up (for good) on August 11th.
That's the song's anniversary, to date, and I wanted to do that last year. Ended up not delivering it for some reason.
But here I am, still jamming to pony music - - fuck, Wootmaster. Thank you for reminding me that I actually like a little pony show. I needed to hear that.

Ohhhh shiit. I can't wait to hear that!

And as always, I'm glad something I wrote could make you feel. This pony shit is incredibly fun, and you shouldn't be ashamed to have fun with it.

Also, you know that Tracy song you did? I need to get the stems for it. That means a version without the percussion, and then a version with the percussion only. I want to begin working on it right away.
