Hasbro's goal has always been to sell toys, nothing has changed with them. A good writer can make the story flow naturally around obstructions, lack hasbro demanding twilight become a princess. The cold hard truth is that writers have gotten lazy, that's the real reason MMC sucked, because they didn't take their time and make it a two to three parter like they should have and instead chose to write twenty minute commercial for the new product with about ten minutes of actual content.

When you consider everything about Twilight's character they've been hinting for a long time that Twilight has some destiny beyond being a bearer of an element of harmony. Her cutie mark and name fits perfectly into the royal family of Equestria. There's nothing wrong with Twilight becoming an alicorn, in fact it opens the series up to a whole new world of possibilities. How will twilight's friendships change now that they are no longer her equal? Will her understanding of friendship change with her added responsibilities, would the change be good or bad?

The problem we have, something that you actually mentioned, is that it was forced in permanently damaging the quality of the story all the while the executives DIDN'T CARE.

The true problem we have with it is not the Twilicorn itself but the meaning behind it: we now know executives are willing to carelessly hurt the quality of the story this bad and with Twilicorn they most likely feel they can get away with, it's a sign that most likely they will recklessly continue to meddle with the story and therefor the quality will continue to drop.

And before you ask why is this so bad for the story, think about it, just 2 and a half seasons in and Twilight is already a princess, this was supposed to be the most important thing to happen and it was treated given less importance than the Wedding of two side characters. Between the previous two episodes suggesting an Equestrian Games episode and how suddenly-forced MMC overall feels (even compared to others), it seemed obvious Hasbro had a sudden demand for a new Princess toy set, and just had DHX drag Faust's original destiny in early and glamour-ize it.

I disagree, I like Twilight and Spike and honestly think the duo could hold their own. The problem is toywise and to well appease most of the fans, we still need to give focus to the other main characters but because this ascension wasn't really planned out and as such we have an entirely new storyline that really only pertains to Twilight.

The fact that this wasn't well planned out means that something like this demands a significant amount of attention, for a story arc that only really deals with one character. Unlike comics they can't exactly create ministories that could follow this arc outside of the main storyline. This storyline has to be followed alongside every other story in Season 4, or they will try to wrap it up as quickly as possible and forget about it (which going by Equestria Girls seems most likely).

An analogy would be like well maybe a bad port of a game, glitches start occurring, the game slows down, features may be missing, gameplay mechanics may be changed for the worse all because they didn't take the time to work out the compatibility issues. That is what this is, even if you like the focus Twilight and Spike have been getting then you might not like the fact that the show still has to contend with the other main characters to keep the other fans pleased and keep those toys selling. It is a setup and storyline that is having all sorts of problems trying to fit in with the show's direction (at least as of Season 3).

I like and hate Equestria Girls, and it really shows my polarizing opinion about Meghan McCarthy. The fact that I like how she depicts my top 3 characters (Pinkie, Spike, Twilight) and the fact that she is biased towards them makes me really like her episodes. I love the characterization of those three characters in Equestria Girls, I found Pinkie's antics entertaining, and we got essentially an entire movie where we see Spike and Twilight work as a team. The duo is a lot of fun and there was a small Banjo-Kazooie vibe from the way they interacted which was awesome. The problem is McCarthy's bias kicks in and makes the duo over competent which I would like if it wasn't for the fact that this show is more about the friendship between the mane 6 than between a brother and sister. The mane 5 seem rather tacked on and feel like a waste that could have been better spent following Spike and Twilight as they try to figure out how to get back the element of magic and not be defeated by Sunset Shimmer.

One theory i've heard which I quite like is that Twilight was going to learn how to control the day/night cycles like the unicorns of old could. So that Celestia and Luna could leave the ponies to their own devices once more.

2 things have lended to that idea:
- Lauren's tweet about Celestia putting a "cork" in Twilight's magical ability in her youth until she was ready to control it
- Hearth's Warming Eve was one of Lauren's most involved episodes of S2 and delves into alot of world building

It would also have left a nice message to kids and adults that one day they will grow up and be able to do the things their parents can do

My attitude is I LIKED parts of the concept for Equestria Girls namely humanized ponies and alternate universes. Had they not tone down on the fantastical elements and action (via combat or physical gags) then I would have loved it

I am okay with Alicorn Twilight if there was better build up or she was clearly the main character then yes I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I am fine with the show taking place after Twilicorn if we were really seeing the characters emotionally and physically mature. I don't think these ideas are bad, but they are being executed in an awful manner now and to fix it seems very unlikely. It is a mess.

I think the most ideal thing would have been having the build-up and ascension be the penultimate season, while the last season is a prolougue about how they are dealing with it and how are their lives will be from now on.

Equestria Girls in some sense feels like the perfect nostalgia movie, had FiM finished the character arcs for his main cast and secondary characters, had a nice long run, and gave proper attention to Twilight's ascension then Equestria Girls would have been a perfect "What if?" movie and would have given us a look back to how everything got started.

I don't think your claim that "Magical Mystery Cure" was done only to sell toys holds water.

Twilight's destiny involving some kind of leadership role has been part of show canon from the beginning. Even if Faust didn't want to make more alicorns, her vision also included this element.

Many, many episodes have focussed on Twilight growing and maturing, finding ways to apply her talents to contribute to the community ("Winter Wrap-Up"), experiencing defeat and adversity but triumphing anyway ("Return of Harmony Parts I and II), tempering her demands on herself ("Lesson Zero"), learning to put others' interests before her own ambition ("The Crystal Empire Parts I and II"), and struggling to deal with her responses to stress (LZ, TCE, "Games Ponies Play").

For something done just to sell girly toys, this change has a solid basis in the show and in the development of Twilight's character over three seasons.

I don't get pissed off at the anti-Twilicorn people for having an opinion I disagree with.

I feel like Meghan suffers from the "Jurassic Park syndrome" in that rather than understanding and thinking when making the show, she goes for the flashy and the "epic" without thinking twice, slaps it on a box and sells it.

Like, in S1, it felt like every action the ponies took and whatever event they were submitted to was thought out. In S3, Twilicorn happened, and everyone was unconditionally happy about it without any kind of reflectional thoughts, except "Do I have to read books about being a princess", coined to make the audience think "aaaw she's so adorkable".

I think the hate and viritol for MMC has been overblown, but not nearly as much as the praise for it has.
