I think she was good potential for a villain for the movie. I think they just fell short of her back story, she was a student of princess celestia and that alone makes her interesting.
In the movie they IMPLIED events that sunset didn't know how to make friends and possibly that she was jealous of twilight.
I feel like they could have explored her character a little bit more. Both when she use to be in equestria and the human world

scratch that, I feel like i want to talk about the whole mane6 friendship thing.

I think it would of been better if they made twilight WORK a lot more to rekindle the friendship of the mane5 after their friendship breakup.
Twilight needs the mane5's help to get her crown back for the princess voting so she is the one who ultimately brings their friendship back together. (It would be more fun that way for people who watched the show because we remember that the other 5 all Became twilights friends so its kind of like the reverse of the first 2 episodes and that would make it even better)
I also would of liked to of seen how the mane5 lost their friendship a long time ago rather then just verbally hear about it.

Because to be honest all they really said (And I give meagen points for this Can't believe Im saying that

Meagan tried to make it that in the mane 5's verbal argument the reason they became mad at each other was because they acted the opposite way of what their element represents.

Okay, im going to talk about the movie in general now.

The movie felt really short to me...
and it felt like because of that it seemed rushed.
I felt like the MLP episodes felt longer then the movie and they were able to give us a lot more detail in those short 22 minutes.

I wish I could write a review as a person who has never actually seen the MLP show so I could give a fair unbiased opinion about it.
But I bet if I tried it would still sound biased.

The movie had some good humor in it, I chuckled quite a bit, especially from those small subtle moments (Applejack was wearing a long dress for the dance and rarity pulls it up so its a skirt and applejack makes a "Really?" face (Got me chuckling)

I liked the animaton, it wasn't to sharp, to bright, to weird. It was very soothing and still fit the atmosphere of equestria.

One of the things I did somewhat like is all the jokes that only bronies/horsefuckers would get, But that becomes a bit of a problem when they try to incorporate it into the movie to obviously.

Vinyl scratch was one of those references but it wasn't one that I would call distracting/confusing to the non reference knowledge viewer. (NRKV for short)

But when rainbow dash ended up saying here famous "SO AWESOME" face I felt like that was a little bit of one of those moments that didn't feel like a good subtle way to reference it. so it was one of those references I don't feel was really needed.

Their was also the part about the grand galloping gala when twilight mentions it.
That works in 2 diffrent ways.
1. The very wonders what the hell that is
2.It actually emphasizes the fact that twilight is from a diffrent world because the (NRKV) viewer dosn't know anything about the pony culture.

On another note I think it would of been a good idea to give the (NKRV) A little bit more knowledge of the pony culture so they might know a little bit more about just how different the 2 worlds in the movie are.

Honestly, my problem is that, once again, Twilight doesn't evolve from the experience. She walks away saying "neat i'll be a princess". It's not even character development. Then again, since this is in no way connected to S4, we can't permit character development to happen.

Question about Shimmer, why did she stay behind? Yeah its implied she is going to rebuild the school, but I would like to make the point that one of the reasons TS went to Earth anyways was to retrieve the crown and prevent any major damage. This pony from Equestria spent 2 and a half years wrecking friendships. Given that, shouldn't TS have hauled her ass back to Equestria to prevent more damage, even though she resolves to be better?

While I want to say the doppleganger thing was cheap, it made sense because we don't have to establish any real new characters. But the cheapness of it reeks throughout the movie. This was TS's movie, they could have done awesome character development with Sunset, but naw, we need to make the TS cum buckets of dosh before anything else.

Also, since TS was staying at the school, why didn't she just steal the crown and go home? Lets ignore the fact that it's 'bad' and look at the consequences of failure, SS might win and get it and then invade equestria with a bunch of hypno humans in pony bodies who have no idea how to use those bodies. Given the consequences of failure, the best option would be to just steal the fucking thing by force and make a mad dash to the portal, and put up guards at the portal incase SS tries to come though for it. I mean is this really the Eagles in the Lord of the Rings shit again?

Well they locked up the crown and the principles hid it somewhere. So I don't think twilight had any idea of where it was anyway.

I think they should of had a scene where sunset shimmer apologizes to the main5 about their IMPLIED friendship break up and and she admits that she IMPLIED did it.

And then sunset and the other mane5 become her new friends and sunset becomes like the twilight sparkle of that universe for their group, and sunset learns about the magics of friendship. (We better not let hasbro get this idea so they can easily rip-off this idea for a new series)

Not going to lie, I felt that Twilight leaving Shimmer in the human world didn't make sense. The characters are more lenient towards those who show signs of remorse, like Sunset did. And like I said, she's powerless now. No magical artifacts, and her true colors are shown so she can't exactly be as manipulative as she usually was.

She seems like she's in her senior year, so a few years after graduating she can probably make her decision when the portal reopens. Celestia even seemed like she'd take Sunset back with open arms if she did. Though whether she chooses to do so or not, I think she'll probably be a better person and not a saboteur anymore.

Just got back from work.

Anyway, what is my view on FS?

Well to be honest when I saw the EqG trailers I felt like he was going to be a somewhat important support part in the movie, I was actually a little surprised that we saw so little of him.

I also thought he was going to be the first human friend twilight makes at the school.

I felt like he should of been the guy who shows twilight round and tells her about the school and the social circles and stuff.

Then after twilight meets the other mane5 FS could of been like the watcher from the background and he would see her occasionally while she's making friends with the mane5 and he would give her a thumbs up or something.

Then after we start to se that he's actually a pretty cool dude he would stand up for twilight in that scene where he shows the evidence about how the photos were fake.

Throughout the movie we could see that twilight is a little flustered by him helping her and after when twilight beets sunset then he would ask her to dance and have some silly conversation about he thinks she's attractive or something.

I will agree with >>11612169 about how his personality was bland.
They should of made him a guy with a patient and yet somewhat helpful kind of personality to make him seem like the kind of guy who would help twilight out.

It would also be interesting if he was under the impression that twilight was from the far country or something because she acts so different from the rest.

I also think that they could've taken out that part where he use to be sunset shimmers BF. because there really is no reason to have it in.

Another point is at the end of episode 5, Snips and Snails knew they did wrong and their destructiveness was a mistake. In the movie, they didn't care and enjoyed sabotaging Twilight and destroying the decorations.

I'm actually kind of disappointed this won't be made use of in season 4, or probably any subsequent seasons.

Sunset Shimmer has great potential as a character, and as a foil to Twilight. Like Trixie, she has her implied depth. However, also like Trixie, she was given a quick redemption after doing abhorrent things.

I'd hope that perhaps some in the "fandom" would latch onto the character and create content around her that isn't just porn, though that's nice too.

Also, where is the god damn succubus porn, holy shit, it's been forever.

Just finished watching the movie. I definitely have some complaints, but for the most part, it did surpass my expectations.

First off, high school drama is retarded. I'm pretty sure that this goes without saying. The basic storyline of this movie was absolutely horrid, basically everyone saw what was coming once the general storyline was revealed. Just had to get that out of the way, onto my actual thoughts.

Character development in the movie was very weak in a lot of aspects. We didn't get much of a background on Sunset Shimmer, which was kind of disappointing. We definitely were given the impression that she was spiteful, but more background than one or two lines would have been nice. Why was she interested in splitting up friendships? Was she actually popular, or just a notorious bully? How significant was she in the pony world?

Spike being a dog was upsetting. He had some "cute" interactions with Rarity, but other than that, it really didn't support his character, or give him the opportunity to shine. He was able to give Twilight some behind the scenes advice, but seeing him interact with other students and the main cast would have been nice. I feel he would have been a lot more important if he were also made into a human.

Flash Sentry's presence, for the most part, was very unenjoyable. His role in the movie (asides from the unneeded love interest) could have been collectively filled by other characters. The Fall Formal support from "the popular kid" could have been filled by the main 5, Rainbow Dash especially, being the last to be confronted, and being the captain of a ton of sports teams. It seemed that Flash's purpose was to represent the hive-mind of the school itself. With clever writing he is completely unneeded. Someone else could have pulled those pictures out of the trash to defend Twilight, anyone. His addition won't have been an issue, if the movie wasn't so pressed for time. Instead of weak development for a bland, stereotypical character, the writers could have used the screen-time to give us more background information. The time could have been used to provide lengthier friend resolution between the main 5 within the story. It could have been used to give more first time viewers more background on the pony world. Main point, he ate up time that could have been better invested.

The love interest. I thought it was a bad move on the writers' part. Honestly, it would make more sense if Equestria Girls were being incorporated into season 4. This makes it boil down to two things. Either Meghan is straight up lying to us lel, or the writers poored a significant amount of screentime into a love interest that isn't going anywhere. If Equestria Girls is actually going to be considered “canon”, Flash Sentry's presence actually begins to make more sense, because he has value in the future of the series. Either way, his addition to the movie was a poor decision in my eyes, maybe they're planning for the future, but right now, Flash Sentry seemed like an all around, bland termite eating away at the small time-frame the writers were assigned.

It would have been nice if the time used up by Flash Sentry was invested into Sunset Shimmer's character development. Her character had the potential to be very intriguing, but she ended up being a stereotypical, popular/bully girl. It would have been nice to see a flashback to her life in Equestria. This would have given everyone a better idea of why she was doing what she was doing, and it would have given first time viewers a stronger visual of what Equestrian life is like. If anything introduced in Equestria Girls is introduced into the fourth season, I would like it to be Sunset Shimmer. She had a lot of raw potential that this movie totally dropped the ball on.

The nods to the fandom within the movie were... very cringeworthy at times. I get it, you guys are trying to impress us. Please, do this through original content instead of already watered down references. In moderation, this jokes are enjoyable, but I differently felt that they were used more frequently than the should have been. One or two jokes would have been fine, but eventually it was just sickening. Maybe the jokes themselves didn't upset me, maybe it was the reactions that they elicited within the sea of neckbeards watching. Either way, the support is “nice” but tone it down, especially if the movie is being shown in a public setting amongst two completely different audiences.

It's pretty easy to pick at details. For the most part, I enjoyed the movie despite everything said so far. I was expecting it to be an absolute train-wreck, but I feel the writers did a decent job with the seemly atrocious storyline. The characters that they chose to develop were very genuine, and matched their pony counterparts very well. The gags were fairly funny, and a lot of interesting mediums and ideas were opened up by introducing Twilight to an entirely new world.

I liked the way that the writers touched base with Twilight becoming a princess. It was very nice of them to dedicate sometime to addressing her new social status. I liked the way that they made her uneasy about her new responsibilities. Doing all of this was pretty much a no-brainer, but I am glad that they did it anyways. Twilight doesn't completely feel confident yet, and doesn't have the desire to rule a kingdom. That was a good touch. I'd also like to say that I was ecstatic when Twilight and Cadence didn't do the “sunshine sunshine, ladybugs awake” dance.

Even though I feel that the time could have been BETTER managed, I thought the pacing was pretty impressive. It felt a lot less rushed than a lot of what we have seen within the actually show. What they were able to do with 70 some minutes was pretty impressive. The story carried itself well, and they did a decent job at explaining... most... things. Somethings could have used a little extra time (friendships being resolved, general character interaction), but for the most part, the writers did a decent job with the time slot that they were proved.

The musical numbers were pretty well done as far as I could tell. Okay, save for the introduction, which I literally laughed out loud at. I've never been a fan of the songs within the show, so I can't be a very good judge in this field. From what I could tell, the songs were pretty much up to par with those in the show. Catchy, well placed.

So, I guess I have to eat crow and say that the movie was decent. Not amazing, but excusable. I enjoyed it, and feel that it was generally well executed. I'd give it a 6/10. Hopefully any connections to the show stop here. I wouldn't want to see it incorporated into the series, and I don't want Hasbro and the writers to put anymore time into it. Decent for a one time thing, nothing more.

I think what people need to keep in mind about FS is that he, more likely than not, was a forced character that Habro insisted the writers work into the story. as >>11616475 said, just about every part of significance he held could have easily been filled by some other character, probably in a better way, too. I don't think the writers, who have done so many things right over the course of the show and movie would have screwed up such a character that harshly. i honestly think that since Habro pushed this movie pretty much to compete with Monster High, that they wanted demanded some love interest in it. i think that the writers disliked FS just as much as some of us did and purposely tanked his character, or it could be possible that they just had to add him last minute.

but then, this is all speculation, and maybe the writers simply can't do male love interest characters very well. Hasbro is somewhat run by greedy bastards who don't actually care much about the show, so who the hell really knows?

Also thought the Sailor Moon transformation sequence was pretty pointless. I can't say anything much that already hasn't been said. I agree with most of the stuff said in this thread.

I want to elaborate more on the lack of humanize BG ponies though. They put so many fandom references in agree mostly with >>11620947 on this one, often felt forced, but I did enjoy most of them; wish they would have put more "new" things in finding the right balance of pandering like Pinkie Pie's transformer thing, so they know what ponies we all really love. Where was Lyra? Berry Punch getting juice out of a vending machine? For god sakes, 4/5 times Octavia goes hand in hand with Pon3! I also think if Hasbro really wanted to go super "modern topics," Braeburn could have been the flagrant gay. Okay, aside from all Brokeback Mountain references, cowboys aren't the stereotypical gay, but he could have been sassy or hanging up a rainbow banner. The footballer BG guy king of looked based from RD's old bully as a filly, but that was about as far as I could see. The curly haired nerd girl had such high potential to be Twist, but the glasses and colors were off. And her "cutie mark" was two pencils crossed, I think. Also, THE FUCK WAS ZECORA? They better be saving her for an "exchange student/new foreign teacher" episode or something. I understand it would be weird to have a striped human because they kept the coat colors the same, but I was disappoint because even though Big Mac is my fan girl crush I would argue that she carries close to as much character significance as Big Mac, and he was in there.

Using BG pony color schemes would have saved from having to design so many quickly put together OCs. Yeah, they would have had to redesign them, but the colors and styles would be there. We would have enjoyed it much more.
