I thought that Rarity and Pinkie Pie were really annoying this episode. Rarity's vanity was way over the top (and I'm a Rarifag), and Pinkie Pie's only good line was the "I WANT A FLUGLEHORN!" bit.

Celestia's behavior completely contradicted the moral of the story. The day was saved because Twilight didn't let her personal interests get in the way of saving the crystal ponies, but the only reason Twilight was even concerned about the issue was because Celestia decided to tell her favorite student that it was some kind of test and everything was going to depend on her for no apparent reason.

In short, Celestia's as much a source of the episode's conflict as Shadow Cloud Pony.

Sombra had the potential to be as badass and complex as Discord, or to have as interesting of a backstory as Luna/Nightmare Moon, and he just gets assigned to the general "pure evil incarnate" role. He would've been way more threatening and memorable if he had actual depth as a character.

It's been ever so long.

Part one was good. I like political intrigue. Part two seemed a bit out of place, a bit too much action than would otherwise be acceptable. Songs were catchy as fuck. Chrysalis was OK, but her motivation to order the Changelings to destroy Canterlot seems a bit out-of-place if they feed off love. Nice attention to detail, I noticed Canterlot had a giant pink sphere around it when it was still in the background.

Cadence and Shining's introductions were handled poorly like the Mary sue family they are. The songs were forgettable,the only one which I liked was the disney-like villainy. Beginning was fast.
Sombra was awful, even down to the fucking design.
The theme of the episode was cryptic and even more awful. Self-sacrifice? It's like they didn't even know what they were doing.
Shining Armor and Princess Cadence had an awful cameo appearance.
Songs were mediocre, although I did love the reprise. That Rarity's voice with Twilight complementing.
The Crystal Ponies sucked.
And the setting sucked. Crystal Kingdom or Empire or whatever looked stale as fuck.
I liked the part where RD beat Fluttershy though. Not the beating part, but the whole contest thing. It helped they were both using cool armor.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Crystal Pony song, but I'm probably in the minority on that one. The only point I can agree on is the second one, but hey, his point was to stand there and be menacing. They showed what they needed of him and he was just a really bad antagonist. The episodes were enjoyable, yet the giant fucking plotholes and obvious filler throughout the majority of the episode made it seem lackluster.

First of all: Discord is neither complex nor bad-ass.

Second: he was a different kind of a villain and worked out perfectly in my opinion. Giving him a three minutes speech and two songs wouldn't have added anything to his roll. He went straight down to business and had more of a threatening atmosphere than any other villain so far.

Dragons have always eaten crystals, but I'm not sure if the crystal tarts and whatever are actually crystals, or if they're named after the ponies, like a local variation. Crystal berries don't make a lot of sense either.

I agree on you on the most parts, that Sombra had no cool character was a huge let down, but since the episode was more about Twilight´s exam and how she solves it and her relationship with celestia, rather than showing the epic clash between the Mane 6 and Sombra it´s excusable. All valid points. I would of liked to see less of twilight and more king sombra to get a better understanding of what he was about. The songs were below average compared to previous episodes.

I couldn't work out why luna was on twilights case in the beginning of the show either. Didn't twilight help her make friends in the Halloween episode etc?

On the plus side the episode did make me laugh at certain parts (pinkie and her flugel horn)
