I don't know whether she is or not, but I wouldn't count on the episode telling us. Lauren said flat-out that she wanted AJ's parents to be dead, but she didn't mention it because she feared that Hasbro would find it too sad. So, she just quietly left AJ's parents out. The way she answered the question, starting to say "it would have been too sad," striking that out but leaving it legible, then writing "would have been deemed" in italics, made it clear that SHE didn't think so, but Hasbro would have.

So, no, we're probably not going to find out that Scoots is an orphan.

Or AJ.

Or Fluttershy, for that matter.

A) They didn't think that far ahead on that detail

You're insulting someone else, genius. I went away and watched "Hurricane Fluttershy" again. Then I watched Fluttershy's segment of "The Cutie Mark Chronicles."

Whoever said the bullies had cutie marks was half right: the brown haired one does. The gray haired one doesn't. Only a tiny piece of Brown Hair's showed in that first image posted here. You can barely see a fleck of orange under his wing, in front of Gray Hair's nose.

Dash still looks younger in the "Hurricane Fluttershy" flashback than she does in "Cutie Mark Chronicles." I no longer think it was supposed to be Fluttershy's distorted memory, though. Like Luna in the pilot and Luna in her later appearances, it's just not consistent.

"Hurricane Fluttershy" really is an excellent episode. I'm glad I watched it again. It's amazing that they packed that much story into 22 minutes. The writing impressed me all over again.

Anyway, I still have no idea whether Fluttershy was supposed to be older, or just tall and gangly. Your oh-so-clever and perceptive comment...

...is irrelevant in that scene. The Mane Six have the same body types, but the juveniles in that scene have three different body types among four ponies. The bullies are the same. Dash is smaller. Fluttershy is thin, long-legged, and unique.

Lauren would have let them be dead. She was afraid Hasbro wouldn't allow it. However, Hasbro might be loosening up. They gave up on the E/I bug. The stories are getting sadder and scarier. "Hurricane Fluttershy" was very sad in parts, and gave us more background on why she's such a basket case. "A Canterlot Wedding" and "The Crystal Empire" were both scarier than anything we've seen before them. I hope Hasbro is giving the creative people more freedom. They deserve it. They turned trash into gold.

- The episode is called "Sleepless in Ponyville", not "sleepless in Apple Acres" or "Sleepless in Everfree".
- Synopsis doesn't mention the rest of the CMC, it usually does, see for example One Bad Apple, likely a Applebloom-focused CMC episode.
- IF they give her parents, they have to introduce them as well as introduce the plot, they also need to introduce the reason for her being at a campfire and listening to horror stories in the first place, etc. etc.

I've never been a Scootaloo fan, or a fan of the CMCs in general, for that matter, but some of the comics and the headcanon in this thread make me understand why people love her. I'm finding myself hoping that Hasbro grows a pair and lets her story be sad.

Fluttershy's too — not that it isn't already, but showing even nastier parts of her childhood would sure explain a lot.

The teacher cried. Lisa P. put her head down on her desk and cried. The rest of us squirmed.

The next day, Lisa P. was no longer there. Her parents transferred her out of that hellhole. I never saw her again.

You know what? I am tired of Scootaloo as the Dickensian Waif. I want to see her as the daughter of some union Weather Patrol lifer. Dad's a gruff working class stiff, Mom's a secretary, and there are subtle hints of less than stellar parenting in the home.

I always thought the basis for the Scootaloo orpphan thing was that her family, or any of her home life for that matter, was ever shown on screen. We see Apple Bloom's PARENTS and Sweetie Belle's too, but not a glimpse of even an older brother from Scootaloo.

Well, Scootaloo and Fluttershy have even more design elements in common than either of those sister pairs; color scheme, hair flow shapes, and inside hair lines. I think they were originally intended as sisters, but writing it into the show made it impossible after The Stare Master.

I personally believe Scootaloo and Fluttershy were intended to be sisters, they're more similar than AJ/AB and Rr/SB, but this idea was scrapped during development, the design remained though.
