  • Attention 4chan extension/user script/archive developers: Some time in the next few days, we'll be rolling out a complete HTML rewrite of the imageboards.
The design will remain the same, but the underlying HTML/CSS is completely new, and validates HTML5/CSS3 (with some tweaks to account for cross-browser compatibility).

Please visit this thread to read more about the changes, and here to preview the code.

As a regular user, these changes should not affect you. You will need to update your 4chan browser extensions/user scripts when their maintainer updates them to be compatible with the changes.
The official 4chan Chrome extension will be ready to go when the updates happen, and 4chan X should be ready soon. We'll post more details on the day of the migration!

Does /m/ think that TTGL is stupid entry level "Junk food"?

Well, I have heard what /a/ has had to say on the matter, but at the same time I think the immense population of that board has almost reached /v/ levels of "hate everything".

So, from an /m/ standpoint, is TTGL "bad"?

There is nothing wrong with TTGL, it's actually good. It's the fans that take it too far, think it's original and don't know what Getter Robo is that's the problem.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)07:03 No.7711636
Personally I would call it 'entry level', but I'd call it good entry level. It homages (see: steals from) some of the most iconic mecha franchises, but presents it all in an entertaining and mostly enjoyable way.
If you see GL and it makes you want to check out the older series that inspired it? That's great.
If you see it and think it the most original and inspired epic series ever and don't want to watch older shows because they're dated? Then you're an idiot.

    >>7711631

While this is true, there's also the other side of the coin. Getter fans who are mad that TTGL got a lot of attention for a couple of years after it's release and hate on the show because people like it but won't give Getter a chance for whatever reason, or act like the Getter mangas are impeccable masterpieces without any fault.

Both fanbases take it too far. Which is why I don't identify myself with either and just enjoy both works without thinking of myself as a fan of either.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)07:24 No.7711707
I love Getter. I love Mazinger. I love TTGL.

    Is it really that hard?

Fans in general are bad but TTGL was just disscussed to hell and back so people got sick of it.
Sort of like how Katawa Shojou was popular when it came out but then a bunch of fags kept obsessing about it until now.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)07:25 No.7711713
There are always people who "hate it because it's popular" or some shit like that
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)07:26 No.7711715
    It's generic super robot.

And before the Age thread posters jump on me, I mean that in the literal sense of "generic".

Then i ask you: What is original now ?
There are no original super robot show can call itself original recently anymore. Try too hard and be called HERP DERP, try to be entertaining and be called generic. There are no shows can cater everyone's taste. TTGL is a entertaining show, if anything, hardcore mecha geeks should appreciate it for it provide a softer, good entry to super robot genres

    I didn't say boring.
    I didn't say not entertaining.
    I said generic.
    >1. of, applicable to, or referring to all the members of a genus, class, group, or kind; general.
Tack "of show" on the end of genus/class/group/kind.

It's what TTGL set out to do. Take reference from and pay homage to super robot shows of the past. It's *generic*.

    >Getter fans who are mad that TTGL got a lot of attention for a couple of years after its release
Not at all. The manga has just been recently translated and the Getter fans are mostly tied with the old Go Nagai fanbase. The Getter fanbase on /m/ was formed post TTGL thanks to manga translations.

Although the mangas aren't impeccable, TTGL did take from it.

I agree. I love getting into the intricacies of other shows, but if I just need a simple but magnificently put-together pick-me-up show to enjoy? TTGL is cracked open and always, always thoroughly enjoyed.

TTGL isn't the only one for that. I can pick up Mazinkaiser and call it a day.

So can I, I ADORE Mazinkaiser. But in my opinion, I think TTGL just hits a little better when that's what I'm feeling like watching.

Oh I fully recognise that TTGL shamelessly lifts lots of parts from the various Getter mangas, amongst others. I just don't care. See pic.

    >>7711755

While I agree Gurren Lagann isn't the only one good for that, I really despise Mazinkaiser. I watched Shin first and then Kaizeer, and Kaizer is just a complete let down in every way compared to it.

New Jeeg, GGG, GunxSword, Outlaw Star and probably several others I'm forgetting off the top of my head are also good for just picking random episodes and always enjoying. Aquarion Evol looks destined to join that list too.

There's also several others that I enjoy watching specific episodes of regularly, like Eureka 7 and
    Macross 7.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)07:58 No.7711796
It's not bad, I enjoyed it. But then I didn't treat it as a serious mecha show. It's typical gainax - take an anime stereotype and blow it wide open.

It'll never be a purist favorite, but it's barrels of fun if you don't take it seriously.

It's kind of like TimeSplitters; if you're a hardcore fan of FPSs you may not appreciate the lack of realism, but it's not really meant to score points with the hardcore fans - it's just meant as a fun parody.

I don't care that you care. Only that you recognize the influence. That's all.
    >despising Kaiser
    >praising Shin
The truth is Kaiser was technically a better show. Well for me, I thought Kaiser was funnier than TTGL, but not as funny as New Getter Robo.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)08:32 No.7711832
    >>7711821

In what way was it technically better out of interest? The characters, humor and action in it all fell flat for me, and were much better in Shin. The only thing it had above Shin was some tits in one episode, and those few seconds of nipples aren't even close to enough to salvage what was otherwise an abortion.

I can understand people who grew up with the original liking it mind, and have no problem with people who didn't liking it either, I just ask that they have no issue with me hating it.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)08:39 No.7711836
Who else really fucking hated Kamina? I though he was one of the most obnoxious characters in the whole show. Thank god he died.

Higher production values and better action. Shin's humor was pretty bad considering the fact that Imagawa has never been good with comedy (See the Ginrei ovas). Honestly, I just don't see how Shin could be funnier than Mazinkaiser. Heck, even TTGL isn't funny, but wacky.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)08:53 No.7711862
    >>7711743

Yeah no. The Getter fanbase was always based around the OVAs and it pretty much still is. It was already well-established here in 2007.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)09:08 No.7711900
    >>7711844

It might have had higher production values and be technically better in that regard, but humor and action are both a matter of personal preference, not technical fact - and I preferred both in Shin over Mazinkaizer. I think I laughed once during the entirety of Mazinkaiser, and I know I laughed a lot more watching Shin. The humor isn't the highlight of either, the difference is, it's one of the supposed highlights of Mazinkaiser and I just never felt it. Perhaps it's because I never really felt a conenction to the characters or plot (what little there was of it), and so the humor never grabbed me? Either way, seeing Baron Ashura ham it up as the Professor, Boss bungling around and everyone being basically stupid for the sake of comedy didn't engage me or make me laugh.

It wasn't a fanbase as we know it back then. Like I said, it was mostly tied to the Go Nagai fanbase.
    >7711900
I don't think Shin even had funny moments, save for episode 10. Mazinkaiser was technically better. Technical = production values. Plot and everything else, that's just preference. Shin Mazinger was good only for the story really. Everything else was subpar.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)09:40 No.7711973
This show is next on my list after I finish GaoGaiGar (and FINAL), Getter Robo Armageddon, and G Gundam, and I've already watched Shin Mazinger and New Getter

It seems like something I'd enjoy, even if it does have some annoying fans

    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)09:51 No.7711992
    A) Gurren Lagann is pretty mediocre and generic. Solid, but nothing special. It's something we've all seen time and time again.

    B) Fanbase is incredibly annoying. "Y U h8 GL hurr" threads all the time, citing that the only possible reason people hate it is because it's popular or because it's a shameless derivative of Getter. No one actually cares about that, but the fanbase thinks that GL is god's gift to the world and it has virtually no flaws compared to other mecha anime. They ignore the DBZ level of stupid that occurs in the series in regards to power ups, they ignore the terribad forced deaths of meaningless characters, they ignore how closely it follows the old and tired Gainax formula for coming of age bullshit, they ignore that the style is the very definition of style over substance - style that it just copy pastes from others. It soulless, but more importantly it's just not that good.

And for the last time - the animation in Gurren Lagann isn't that impressive. It's the animation direction that makes it look as good as it does. The actual framrate is very low and it's pretty jerky but they manage to hide it well. Learn the difference, it could save your life.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)09:54 No.7712004
    There are good fanbases?

    No, there aren't.

GL's alright, but Gainax sucks at pacing and tried to force too many 'epic' moments into the second half. "Hey guys, it's the epic upgrade scene' isn't all that impressive if you pull it off that many times in a thirteen or so episode half.

I thought TTGL was fantastic. I liked the story, I loved the characters, i loved the designs, and I enjoyed the action.
I don't see why anyone would hate it other then to be hipsters...you can hate the fanbase but that doesn't mean the show is bad.
