Gumdramon wants to be Shoutmon so badly, he has to ripoff Xrosses from him. Confirmed for Faildramon 2.0.

The thing I'm most worried about regarding Gumdramon is whether the writers try to make him upstage Shoutmon by making him stronger than the Digimon King at some stage.

Something like that is seriously going to piss some people off, to the point that I'd personally consider this season worse than 02 if it happened, because it basically retcons the entirety of Xros Wars.

Luckily nothing of the sort hasn't happened yet.

Because if anyone could become as strong as the Digimon King that easily, what's the point of Shoutmon having the title?

Also if Gumdramon somehow gets stronger than Shoutmon in a conflict that is far less serious, it's bull.

I don't think Gumdramon will be the future king, he only want be famous, like Tagiru, maybe he will be a hero from the digital world or something else, but put him in the same throne of Shoutmon is really a bad idea.
    >> Anonymous 12/03/11(Sat)23:20 No.7130001
Gumdramon wants to be a superstar of the Digital World. I can see the ending going, "Gumdramon alongside the Digimon King Shoutmon saved both worlds," or something like that. YMMV but it can establish that Gumdramon does become a superstar but also doesn't surpass Shoutmon.

Now, I wonder what they will do with Shoutmon and Taiki's presence in this show. Both of them are more powerful than all of the new characters tenfold (Clock Man is still up in the air). I think writing him out of the story when it comes time for the serious shit to happen. The plot in Digimon doesn't come in until 9-13 eps in. The OHSHITWHATISTHIS moments usually come in the midseason. Something will happen to Taiki and/or Shoutmon midseason (and something will have to in order for the new characters to not be overshadowed or for us to wonder why Shoutmon is having a hard time beating a Ganemon).

The goal of shoutmon was always be the King, in comparison of Gumdramon, that he has another mentality.
If Gumdramon will reach become the King that means a betrayal of all the first seasons of Xros Wars and all the effort that Shoutmon did to become King.

    >>7130095
This. I see Tagiru wanting to surpass Taiki as pretty much a 'little brother wants to beat big brother' type of thing. Gumdramon mainly wants to surpass Shoutmon because of wanting to be a big star. And what way to become a big star than to surpass King Shoutmon. However, I can easily see a plot where Gumdramon learns to be more caring towards others. If he wants to surpass Shoutmon (tnot that it will happen hopefully), he should at least try to be more compassionate like whom he idolizes. I don't think I've seen Gumdramon in a situation where he'd go out his way to protect someone besides Tagiru.

Gumdramon doesn't have to become king to surpass Shoutmon. Gumdramon obviously isn't the leader type but I can easily see him becoming stronger than Shoutmon.

What if part of Tagiru/Gumdramon's development they realize how pointless it is for their only purpose being to surpass somebody else? I really hope they do find their own niche. I think being famous is fine but trying to surpass somebody like Shoutmon is just unrealistic. Even for this kind of program.

Problem is, Shoutmon was powerful as fuck by the end of Death Generals. Add to the fact that 1 year in the real world= 100-somethin Digital World years (math is off) and Shoutmon really has no reason to be surpassed in anyway. Though at the end of the show, I could easily see him goin, "You're surpassed me in one thing: heart." Some bullshit like that, but that's less offensive.

There IS no fanboying. Shoutmon has went through hell and back to become the Digimon King, not to mention the hundreds of years of training and natural strength growing. Not to mention, the audience has emotionally invested in Shoutmon's journey. For that to be given to some attention-whoring chump, well, that's just 02-tier writing.

If Gumdramon isn't allowed to surpass or equal Shoutmon this show will be extremely flawed. Shoutmon was cool but he isn't the main Digimon anymore. If Gumdramon isn't allowed to be on the same level as Shoutmon then all the villains will be weaker than Shoutmon, right? Then why shouldn't Shoutmon take care of everything? We have already found a bypass to the Digimon limit so why doesn't Shoutmon just evolve to his highest forms and take care of everything? That is why Gumdramon needs to be his equal or surpass him. So that he isn't shown up all the time.

Get it? SURPASS. He's not gonna take just being equal. And the fact that he said it himself that he wants to surpass the King takes a lotta balls.

The thing is, in 02, Daisuke just stopped developing and everything came naturally to him after a point.

So far, this has not happened with Tagiru and Gumdramon. For one, their partnership isn't as one note as V-mon and Daisuke's was. They struggle in their relationship with one another. They don't get along. And sometimes their pride fails them and they don't get the job done.

Having a goal, and wanting to surpass someone aren't bad goals. If people never wanted to surpass what their predecessors were capable of, we'd never have any progress or struggles to grab new heights. The trick is that you work for it.

And judging by their progress so far, I'm confident that they will. They'll screw up a lot first, but that's still a one up on Daisuke.

02 is actually way better than Tamers in terms of getting its plot going at the start. We have a clear villain from the first ninety seconds of the show, a sense of what he can do and what he's after. At every point in 02 the protagonists have some goal in mind, even if they're really bad at it almost all the time.

Tamers, meanwhile, has no plot to speak of for about three-quarters of the show. The first quarter's spent fighting random Wild Ones, the second quarter's spent fighting the Devas without any idea of who or what they are or what they're after until it's too late. Then the team goes to the Digital World to bring back Calumon in the second half, completely forgets what they're doing, and fucks around for several more episodes until Beelzemon shows up, at which point the protagonists FINALLY get some clear direction about where they want to go and what they need to do, with about ten episodes left by that point.

Tamers is good at characters and all that, but don't try to pretend its plot isn't easily the slowest of any season ever.

    >Tamers is good at characters and all that, but don't try to pretend its plot isn't easily the slowest of any season ever.

You seem to be intentionally disregarding that much of Tamer's plot was centered around the mystery of why things were escalating as they were. Holding off on a "central villain" until the Deva arc was necessary.

I know pointing out it's flaws is in now, but to say it didn't take care of it's plot points around the same time as the other series is wrong.

...In hindsight, it's probably better to drop this discussion after this post.

For Xros Wars (all seasons) sadly, I do not. However, for previous seasons (mainly Savers, Frontier, Tamers and a very few from Zero Two) I have what is called 'settai' or basically production sheets that are used on the actual show.

Most settai that you find scanned online are photocopies of the originals used on the show (normally for around 25-50+). If I can double check my links later, I should have some up and online to view, so I'll see what I can track down and share with you all.

Not a problem. I scanned in the majority of what I had, though there are still sheets I didn't get to as my scanner refused to work.

    >>7132808

Since these are the sheets that the animators use to keep style, color and whatnot in line, they also have the episode number/s on them for reference (especially if the form debuts in that episode)

It used to be, back when Frontier and Savers were airing especially that if you found these sheets online/elsewhere, that you'd have a pretty good idea what was going to appear within the next few episodes. Doesn't seem to happen much anymore sadly.

These were scanned and uploaded (besides the two folders I just re-uploaded) almost 4 years ago, so please do disregard any odd names/mis-named files. and following on from >>7136616:

What a nice episode. As "outlandish" as Nene's new career may have seemed, it was actually pretty sensibly worked out, and the flashback gave a good background on the situation. That Harpymon vs. Xros Up Arresterdramon fight was awesome, especially the final attack that kinda reminded me of Sonic.
The Amanos' dad seems like a nice guy, and I also liked how the flashback used Nene's first XW outfit; something that 02 never did with the original Adventure characters (from what I can remember anyway).

The fact that the next episode has Gumdramon unable to super-evolve should mean that there'll be more of a team dynamic when it comes to defeating FlaWizarmon, which is something that we really haven't seen that much in the series.

in more ways than one amirite
I agree with you though, as we never really got any real Amano family backstory in XW; I think the closest we got was when Yuu mentioned to Damemon that his grandmother had died. It's like Time Hunters is filling in the bits that XW's human development forgot to cover, and that's what a real Digimon sequel should be: something that continues on from the previous series without messing up said series' continuity.

Exactly. Episodes like this one can enhance a viewer's enjoyment of a series in hindsight by explaining things about a character the show never got around too. After knowing she aspired to be an idol, it makes sense why she was the groups cosplayer, and her acting skills are explained. This is what really separates Hunters from 02 too me; besides the more respectable treatment of old characters, it seems that I can enjoy watching Xros Wars more after watching Hunters and the same was definitely not the case with 02 and Adventure.

With all of that in mind: what the hell's going to happen to Kiriha then? His development is meant to be finished, so there's very little chance we'll get an episode with him in that has more explanation on his background.

I seriously fucking hope that they did at least try to adapt Kiriha to this new series, because if they've just got rid of him then that's ridiculous.

I really regret marathoning Xros Wars in a day, I don't remember much about it, so I don't think I appriciate episodes like this as much as I could. Oh well, Nene is pretty cool. It was nice to see her and Yuu's father.

I always get really nostalgic watching this series. They seem to pick Digimon I would have loved to seen in the anime when I was a kid. Plus any Digimon captured has the potential to have Xrossed Up form with a main character Digimon later on!

There was a small talk about this a while back actually.

We agreed that while Kiriha would be the big CEO in name, it would actually be his personal assistant Nene "pulling the strings" on the Aonuma business empire, so to speak, because she's just like that: subtlely always in control.

I really hope this series is going somewhere...
I couldn't help to remember 02 with this episode.

What was the point of this episode?
Did we learn anything new about the characters (beside nenes relaionship with his dad, which is probably futile)?
I really doubt we'll see nene again in a near future, I'm betting next time will be around episode 70-80 or even 90 and she won't be that important. Her cameo in a previous episode was enough for me, "oh it's that your sister? oh is she an idol now? oh cool story, bro". Next episode doesn't look mindblowing, and after that one we have another food episode. I'm trying to accept this as what it is, but I feel like this is slowly getting to a point of no return. Well, it still have time.

I also agree with you about the opening of Tamers. It was quite slow. I was always wondering "What is Hypnos even there for?" It was kinda like KR Blade and G Gundam for me because that also took quite a while to get going at the beginning, but then it became one of my favorite Riders/Gundams.

Also, In it's profile Megidramon is powerful enough to be part of the 4 great dragons of the digital world, but too emotionally unstable to be listed as a Virus Buster like the rest of them. It's pretty much Takato's Rage channeled into Guilmon, resulting in a Great dragon of pure Rage.

I have to disagree with you on that point; while Xros Wars's early episodes didn't have that much of a tie to an overall plot (it only really got going with the Sand Zone arc in my opinion) it at least had small plots with Xros Heart travelling through the Zones to find the hidden Code Crowns.

I know that Toei probably wouldn't want to repeat themselves, but Time Hunters hasn't really shown anything like the mini-arc sort of cohesion; the episodes don't really link into each other as cleanly as Xros Wars's did. This is also probably the reason why there are no recaps at the start of each episode; there doesn't seem to be any connection between the episodes.

For now, Time Hunters reminds me of Tamers. "fix the situation and find the digimon in question, beat it up" and so on. Only difference is that in Tamers, we had Yamaki and Hypnos trying to eradicate digimon as a goal, we have no opposing force aside from the rival Hunters who interfere at any given time (kinda only applies to Ryouma). If anything, we'll get something by Ep 13, so we really shouldn't be worrying now.

This wasn't a discussion about the quality of the show, just about which got into the plot more quickly. Truth be told I don't really care all that much about plot. Sure, an interesting plot is good, but I could watch a show about nothing so long as I like the characters.

And that's probably my problem with Time Hunters: It teased me by being a sequel with some of the old characters. I started giving up on it when Damemon came back and then went straight to hanging out in the background.

That said I normally keep my complaints to my self and lurk around for when Xros Wars discussion comes up.

Hahaha, it happens to everyone, no worries.

Also, I know you said you wanted it to be Time Hunters, but I was just thinking. Weren't Snow Miser and Heat Miser brothers or something?
...Wait, no, I might use that.

As for Time Hunters.... I guess Gumdramon could be a Rudolph type character? That doesn't help at all does it.

Yannow, they really missed an opportunity to do a voice actress joke and base one of Nene's outfits off of Cure Sunshine.

I really don't find that most Digimon series plot starts till around about this point. So I don't get why everyone is complaining.

The point of this episode was to please Nene fanboys like myself.

    >So I don't get why everyone is complaining.

I've seen more people complaining about the complaining than people showing up just to complain at this point.
And the complaining about the complaining leads people to complain about the complaining about the complaining.

    Everything is broken

Well, that's true, but I mean more how those first dozen or so episodes turned out to be more relevant to the storyarc than originally believed.

Watch when it's at something like episode 25, they start referring to these episodes and everyone will be like "Why did we get so annoyed by the first 10 episodes again?"

I just realised that we're probably a fifth of the way through the series. So, in light of that, let's have your opinions on the first 10 episodes Digimon Xros Wars: The Boy Hunters Who Leap Through Time.

How do you think the series has been handled so far? Who's your favourite new character? Who's your favourite new Digimon? Which episode(s) has been your favourite, and which were your least favourite(s)? What would you have changed about these opening episodes apart from LOLNOPLOT?

I've been enjoying it so far, as for favorite episodes:
    >First episode
    >Seven: Airu episode/Damemon's return
    >Nine: SuperStarmon
    >Ten: Current episode

Least favorite would have to be the Kendo episode. Felt kind of meh. As for the series is being handled, read >>7138692
though it could be better, like have Airu be a secret Nene fan, or something happening relating to how uncontrollable GigaBreakdramon was stated to be.

Favorite character would have to be Airu or Tagiru. One's a girly character done well, though being in a shounen anime doesn't bode well for her, and the other is a dorky guy who ships his mentor with his childhood friend and not how I expected him to be aside from the hotbloodedness.

Favorite new Digimon would have to be Gumdramon, but I really hope he gets his own personality. The two peas in a pod comments make me feel like he's gonna end up as Tagiru 2.0 along the line.

Gumdramon is based on the Monkey King from Journey to the West.
Dragonball and Dragonball Z had Goku, based on the Monkey King from Journey to the West.

Both have long strings of stand alone episodes. It all makes sense now you guys. It makes all the senses in the words.

The Airu episode was #5; #7 was the Pagumon episode
