    Need your help, /m/

I'm planning to build and pilot my own mech fully equipped with the latest technology. My dad was a fighter pilot in Vietnam and has agreed to help me with the jet engines, air conditioning, etc., and I'll probably post a few threads on /n/ too, but before that I need to design a computer system and the programs to run it. I was thinking about using a helmet that measured my brain frequencies to control it, but I'm willing to settle with an old school command module as I don't really have a lot of money. My cousin used to work for an electrician, so wiring the whole thing should go pretty fast.

What I need to know is what kind of computer system I should put in the thing. I've been leaning towards Mac as they don't get viruses and that would be pretty important in making sure the Chinese/U.S. military/aliens don't hijack it, but do you think it would hold up to those tentacle/snake type viruses like the McDougall brothers used in Outlaw Star? It also needs to withstand freezing temperatures and zero gravity, so should I get something to house it in? I've also heard that Macs aren't compatible with a lot of software. Would this be a problem if I decided to use Stinger missiles? Could I get someone to write the software for me? Pic related: It's what I'm aiming for.

    Thanks for your help!

    Build it like a mini-tank.

I never really understood how the hell he was able to make all those maneuvers in that butler mech with just a steering wheel and pedals. Let alone teach George how to fence.

I am serious. And I'd prefer to have it be a walker, not sure if I want to do it like a tank.

Best control system would just be mechanical. You "wear" the controller and the mech replicates your movements. You know, like Escaflowne or Gunbuster.

Kinda. Still looks like it's a software. I was thinking replicating the range of movement could be done through a completely hydraulic system. Force control would still need pressure sensors, though.
    >> Anonymous 01/22/11(Sat)20:14 No.6061371
If you know how to do it, wouldn't something like Linux be better suited for this?
Also maybe you can buy the Steel Battalion controller and try to make it work with linux. I think they have drivers for it already.

OP I already created a computer system that does exactly what you need it for. Don't worry, the antivirus software has lasers and it's Linux. I also made it out of a special material called exellenium that I discovered while trekking through the unexplored amazon, so it can withstand any temperature without malfunctions.

I'll give it to you, but you have to give me your address because I don't want to pay for shipping and will drive it over myself.

    >I've been leaning towards Mac as they don't get viruses and that would be pretty important in making sure the Chinese/U.S. military/aliens don't hijack it,

    Ask a computer engineer.
He'll probably explain why this is a nonissue anyway...
    ...I think.

Pretty sure you're mixing SCIENCE with your science. That sort of machinery doesn't work by booting up a workstation OS and running mech.exe, to the best of my knowledge. You'd need software specifically designed for the mech in question, so it becomes more of a "how should I design my firmware" thing rather than "install Gentoo -> ??? -> profit!"

    TL/DR:
    No fun allowed.
We're not in the remote vehiclejacking stage of warfare quite yet, anyway.
