I've only gotten into Macross three years ago, but at least I started with the old school stuff and gave everything a chance.

I started with Frontier a few months back. After I finished it I immediately proceeded to download every Macross series, movie and ova made along with some of the ost sets. I watched them all, including a rewatch of Frontier to catch all the nods to previous series within 4 or 5 weeks.

Shit was awesome.

Just because somenoe starts with the new stuff doesn't mean they're a bad person or doing it wrong. The original is my favourite now, and I wish more shows did long epilogues like SDF did - even if that wasn't always it's intention.

SDF's was too long, IMO. Nine is too long to really call it an epilogue (it's fully a quarter of the series) and too short to call it a proper "season". An episode or two, maybe even three or four (Simoun did four pretty well), but beyond that is stretching the falling action, I think.

For me, Kawamori tries to hard on the 25 reference that he ends Frontier abruptly.

Even the most likable cast can overstay its welcome. Even the best story can run on too long.

The only problem I had with the extra episodes is that they decided to draw out the love traingle through those episodes rather than wrap it up a few episodes before the end and show Hikaru and Misa as a couple for a while. It'd have been nice to see them have some tender moments, a fight or two and actually work as a couple to be happy etc.

Agreed with this. Even back when I watched it as Robotech the time skip was my favorite part because I felt that it enhanced the story and experience a lot by showing us the hardships of integration.

I preferred Hikaru and Kamjin personally. Hikaru, despite his apparent stupidity with the drawn out love triangle simply because I can empathise with him more. He's not a great pilot, or a great leader or a great anything - he's just a nice guy. I like that. And Kamjin because "I'm a ride this destroid like a cowboy and come back later and fuck your brains out. Yee-motherfucking-haw bitches!".
