Honestly, the best book I've read from the last 10 years is probably The Road.
    >> Anonymous 07/25/10(Sun)13:35 No.965101
/lit/ is too young to be reading current releases. They're still in the nigh school phase where you make your way through the classics. You have to be well read and a bit more mature to pick up a new hardcover.

I've been out of high school for 6 years and I still only read classics with rare exceptions.

Honestly how do I convince myself to read something brand new when there are still Hemingway, Tolstoy, Faulkner, Thoreau, etc.. to be read
    >> Anonymous 07/25/10(Sun)13:46 No.965120

mmmm this is how I feel too. I'd rather spend time reading something that people have been saying is good for years and years than something that's totally hit or miss.

    no you don't.

I tend to lean a little towards older books myself, but to play the devil's advocate, I would say that new books probably offer a different experience.

I mean, books from the 19th or first half of the 20th century have lots of variety, lots of themes and subjects, yeah, but I think newer books might often come from a perspective that just didn't exist then, or have an aesthetic that you just aren't going to experience in an older book.

It's not that any time period is "better", it's just that 50+ years probably gives things a different feel.
