Any of you gents have tips and tricks for writing with a typewriter?
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)12:57 No.956414
Yeah, make sure to avoid any typos.
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)12:58 No.956415
buy enough paper, by which I mean a LOT of paper, you gonna need it
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)13:06 No.956431
    double-space dem lines

    typos are unavoidable

Oooh, ooooh, oooh I got one!
It won't make you a better writer, not even if you think it's really romantic and hip and it puts you in the right frame of mind to write
Stick to pen and paper or wordprocesor both work better and easier

Actually, I am finding that I can concentrate much easier, and it's a little less tedious than writing by hand

    so go fuck yourself

    heres a tip for you:

    use a computer

Yeah I don't think typewriters are inherently inferior to the alternatives. Each method has its drawbacks. The only problem w/ my typewriter is that the ribbon isn't produced any longer. Otherwise, I would definitely use it.

What century do you come from where a typewriter is ''hip''...are you not aware of Macs?
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)20:14 No.957980
    >>956479
If you're under 30-years-old, using a typewriter makes you a hipster piece of shit. It's worse than macs.
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)20:21 No.958001
The advantage of a typewriter is that you write slower to Apis jams. It's much more difficult to just pound out whatever thoughts are floating around in your head - you have to wait for them to congeal and precipitate first.

how about writing with a pencil... like me?
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)20:34 No.958051
What you're doing there, OP, is you're amassing a bunch of stuff the search for and maintainance of which puts off the day when you actually sit down and begin writing. A friend of mine is very like you, and he's tortured himself with this habit. Sit down and begin writing, no more bullshit. Buying a typewriter is an indulgent costume-party joke. Be a man.
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)20:36 No.958059
    >>958036
This has most of the advantages of a typewriter but you're more likely to get a cramp, that annoying callus on your middle finger, and I can barely read my own writing.

    >typewriter

Omg now I will be like Hemingway and write awesome novels on my awesome retro typewriter whilst sipping rum in my drawing room listening to Charlie Parker hurr durr

Seriously fuck off...it's so pretentious it makes me want to shit myself with anger. Real writers just write, not worry about how they write. This goes for macbookfags and moleskin wankers as well. Just write.
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)21:01 No.958149
    Meh
Typewriters are decent for two reasons. One they offer speed and easier access than say a pen (if you have poor or slow handwriting) or a computer in some cases (if it's extremely slow.) Second the lack of ability to make major revisions makes for a good first draft. My typewriter is used for mainly writing first drafts and getting ideas down quickly. My typewriter is in my room, and the computer in the basement. So if I have a good idea in the middle of the night just to get it down quickly on the typewriter (difficult to write things down with a pencil/find a pencil in the dark.) So typewriters can have practical uses and are pretty cheap in some cases. But they certainly won't turn you into a better writer.

Real writers actually have preferences for how they write, as they've done enough to find the method they prefer.

I scribble down near illegible notes in a notepad I always keep with me, for one.

BUT BUYING A FUCKING TYPEWRITER WHEN YOU'VE NEVER USED ONE BEFORE is hipster bullshit.
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)21:22 No.958258
God it's fucking stupid how people give labels to others using different methods of writing. I use the typewriter because:

    A) I get distracted on the computer, and it just takes way too long for windows to load

    B) I get cramps writing with pen/pencil, and sometimes my handwriting is hard to read

    C) A typewriter does everything a pen/paper does, except is it's clear and easy to read

Anyone who's afraid to get a typewriter because they're afraid of being labeled as a hipster is a gigantic faggot, just write with whatever you're comfortable with writing. What is the big fucking deal, srsly...

Just admit you are a hipster douche and are butthurt because you realise your faggotry by reading this thread.

It's very easy to disable the internet to prevent procrastination or just getting on with it. What about your assignments for college? (I assume you are college educated) do you write them on a typewriter? I fucking doubt it.

I'm in my summer holidays, I do my college papers on the PC no doubt, you need me to fill in on every fucking detail?

You know, you can label me a hipster douche for all I care, but I'm getting my writing done, and what part about windows taking too long to load did you miss? Not everyone's able to tackle distraction that easily.
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)21:55 No.958388
    >>958336

Well to me, it doesn't matter. Writing is about the quality of the work, not how you record it. I don't care if you use the back of a fag packet or the highest end computer, it all boils down to what works for you. However I think there is something very superficial about choosing a typewriter as for lots of people it has a retro chic quality, an air of grandeur of many 20th century writers who used it, but in this day and age, it's a deliberate technological step backward for what seems to be for the sake of 'the image'. It's not too far off hipsters with old walkmans or steampunk faggots with pocketwatches. I think it's pretentious and takes away from what you are trying to do - write something.
    >> Anonymous 07/23/10(Fri)21:59 No.958406
    >>958388
    >>958388

It's only pretentious if you're getting it for the image. I had no idea it was a hipster thing to do, as I listed above, I got a typewriter because it's just so much more convenient than a PC, and it really is no different from a paper and a pen, except for the fact that my writing is a lot more easier to read.

I actually use pen/pad with it sometimes, to get some rough ideas down while I'm writing.

My dad still uses a typewriter because he can't use a computer for anything besides email. He also eats potato chips with a fork, non-ironically. Is he a hipster?
