    Question: I'm not sure if you have read Robert Silverberg's "A Time of Changes" or not, but I just picked it out at random and read the basic plot on wikipedia and it seems to be the exact same premise as Anthem by Ayn Rand.

    Is it still worth reading if I have read Anthem?

    Thanks to those e/lit/ists who suggested some books (god damn made sure that Soseki is there)

    Also had a second wind and looked through my library to see what books would be "interesting" to put on the list. I'm not one for a couple of books ("Hagakure," "Musashi," "Kitchen"), but the list is kind of a general Japanese literature thing...so I feel the the three I pointed out fit -- but...

    Took out poetry (I know more about Japanese poetry than Fiction)...makes me sad...but needed to be done.

    I did this to thank the ones who made the Russian, French, Spanish Literature Jpegs...hopefully we'll get German someday.

    Critics/flames are welcome.

    Cool list, I was planning on making one myself but you beat me to it.

    I'd suggest getting the format nicer, I mean, it looks like shit.
    Also, similar to the last Russian Lit guide, divide them by Antiquity (ex: Genji Monogatari), Meiji period (ex: The Setting Sun) and Modern (last 30? years), so you can include more authors and you don't end up mixing H. Murakami with other classical authors. You can even add a list of Light Novels (inb4 = not /lit/) at the bottom.

    As for the content itself, I'd put more popular titles as well.
    For example...
    The Silent Cry or A Personal Matter by Kenzaburo Oe;
    Spring Snow by Mishima;
    No Longer Human by Dazai;
    Norweggian Wood by Haruki Murakami (yes, I know, but most people read it and like it).
    Something else by Akutagawa. The translation for Snow Country doesn't do him justice, it could be the Master of Go or The Sound of the Mountain which are both nice.
    >> Anonymous 05/07/10(Fri)11:37 No.641000
    >>640964
    For periodization, I'd do something more like Classical (beginnings to ~1600), Edo (e.g. Ihara Saikaku, Chikamastu Monzaemon, Basho), and modern.

    I'd divide modern into Meiji (Mori Ogai, Natsume Soseki, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Shiga Naoya, Shimazaki Toson, etc.) and some other division for the stuff after Meiji.

    I agree that the translation of Snow Country does not do the original justice. I haven't read translations of any of Kawabata's other stuff, so I don't know what's good.

    Also, to the creator of the list, why did you take off Almost Transparent Blue? I'd dump some shit like Kitchen and put it back on there.

    >>640964

    Yeah it totally looks like shit -- I'm not too good compiling pics. I just did it on the fly and wanted to see if someone could update or make better...

    >As for the content itself, I'd put more popular titles as well.
    For example...
    > The Silent Cry or A Personal Matter by Kenzaburo Oe;

    Yeah agreed

    > Spring Snow by Mishima;

    Confessions of a Mask is more popular I think...and kind of representational of Mishima's work.

    > No Longer Human by Dazai;

    I feel the Setting Sun by Dazai is probably the quintessential writing by Dazai...I'll think about this one.

    >Norweggian Wood by Haruki Murakami (yes, I know, but most people read it and like it).

    Eh, 50/50 about this.

    >Something else by Akutagawa [kawabata fix'd]. The translation for Snow Country doesn't do him justice, it could be the Master of Go or The Sound of the Mountain which are both nice.

    Although Snow Country isn't greatly translated...I was thinking this list as entry level type of stuff...I would place his collection of short stories actually on the list (Palm-of-the-hand Stories I feel showcases his aesthetic more...or maybe the Izu Dancer).

    Getting to

    I would like to put a lot of poets on this list (not only Basho mind you, Buson, Issa, Tanikawa, Takahashi, Shiki, The Manyoushu, Kokinsho...so on and so forth) but I was trying to go along with what the Russian, French, and Spanish lists do -- post only fiction (which I'm less knowledgeable about mind you).

    > I'd divide modern into Meiji (Mori Ogai, Natsume Soseki, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Shiga Naoya, Shimazaki Toson, etc.) and some other division for the stuff after Meiji.
