Hey /lit/Whats a hipster?
bump
this will answer all your questionshttp://www.cracked.com/funny-4573-hipster/
Board hopper here. A hipster is someone who buy or uses stuff because it makes them look cool. In relation to books, he just buys or reads the book because it makes them look cool. I'm sure /lit/ knows that there are books that fit the hipster label. (inb4 the Twilight series)
generally anyone who rebels against pop culture. Funny thing is there are so many of them whatever they like usually becomes popular and then they have to disown things that they like just to keep hipster status. Hell Starbucks is even to popular for hipsters now.
hipster is the diminuitive form of ''hip'' which most closely means ''in style'' or knowledgeable about popular or counter culture. The word hipster is thrown at people who show any interest in an element of culture or style that might be construed as purposefully transgressive or ironic. or whenever butthurt wannabes desire self affirmation.
youyou're a hipsterfuck you, hipster
A hipster is a person who appropriates aspects of a sub- or counterculture (Beat literature, vintage clothes, aspects of punk or gothic) for the sake of looking and acting different. They don't subscribe to any of the ideals that created those cultures. In other words, posers to the max.
>>598893a wild hipster appears! quick, anybody have copies of atlas shrugged to tempt it with? we may be able to tame it and learn its ways.
Hipster = scenester whose "scene" tends to be the underground subculture(s). the two words synonyms in almost all cases.this is, however, not how it is used on 4chan (anymore)
>>598906Also, hipster will never admit to being hipsters, and they will also claim to hate "hipsters".This is because they are all desperate to feel that they are genuine, because they know that a hipster is a poser.
Surely though hopsters are now cool and therefore will avoid themselves?
why don't you all eat my dick? i don't like atlas shrugged. (even though that must be a troll because ayn rand is not the least bit hip or anything) i don't try to be cool most of the time i do things based on pure intuition. i'm really sick of being called a hipster for my tastes/way of dress/drug use. what is it that i must conform to in order not to be a hipster?
>>598930I won't hear a word said against hopsters.
>>598924Ah answered b4 i posted.
>>598938Yeah man hopsters are ok.Most of /lit/ are hopsters.
>>598946I'm not.
>>598961Shut up...Fuckig hipster.
hipsters are people who try too hard to be cool. theys need to be like me where being cool comes naturally. :)
does anyone have any actual hipster stories? I've seen a few hipsters but have never actually talked to one. are they really as arrogant and ~ironic~ as they're portrayed? or is part of the act the fact they're so talked about but there's really nothing behind it? is the very existence of hipsters ironic?
obligatory Hipster joke is hereby deployed.
>>598980way to take the pejorative term hipster as a practical description of a sub-culture
>>598936my god, hipster dude, you're totally right. i apologize for thinking that you were a silly twat. hopefully this picture will set things right between us?

>>598980The hipsters are really just an ill defined subculture that has weaker conformist tendencies than say the punks or hip hop kids...so they tend to have an less cohesive identity...the hipsters (particularly the ones who live in brooklyn, chicago or other major cities) that have money are as arrogant as any young person with money that they didn't work much for. or really, any young person. really the backlash against hipster is grounded in class consciousness and is really a backlash against upper class kids who appear in the scene whereas the punk subculture for instance was not as accesible to the wealthy kids. truthfully, all subcultures have had their richkids and it's a fact that people ignore when they call anyone who listens to indie rock, likes foreign films, dresses eccentrically and are genuinely into these things a hipster
>>598998i'd say that hipsters are people who aren't genuinely into those things but act like it anyways
>>599012yes but people who are into those things seriously get called hipsters anyway
>>598992WHATTHEFUCKAMIWATCHING.jpg
>>599024true. this is why 'hipster' is really an ambiguous, general insult now with no real connotative meaning
>>598998if you're genuinely into "dressing eccentrically" you're a hipster.
>>599046yeah i think i should stop feeling butthurt about it. ah /lit/ how you help my personal development!
This and Emo I never understood this shit thats been thrown around everywhere recently, I guess I'm too old.
2obscure4u
they're essentially emo kids, except instead of crying and cutting themselves they have an unwarranted sense of superiority.
>>599763that pic is so SEXY
>>599763Bullshit, those aren't hipsters. Their pants have breathing room.
>>599780>>599780DEM LEGS
Well, I'll be an asshole and say its kids who read bukowski....and live in williamsburg....and who drink PBR like its actually better than coors light, when clearly its the same white trash piss...and....well, I could go on. But, my opinion aside, "hipsters" are such a phenomenon a simple search on google or wikipedia will get you results.
>>599763>lack of shitty, unkempt facial hair>pants aren't skin tight>not drinking shitty beer>hipsterswat
People don't really hate hipsters, they hate rich kids. And for good reason. off with their motherfucking heads. But i'm still going to drink PBR when it's the cheapest (which it isn't anymore. thanks, rich kids--Steele reserve is what real drunks drink anyway) And I would live in williamsburg if it was still affordable (which it isn't. thanks, rich kids and yuppie gentrification) It's about the bourgeoisie and yeah they don't deserve our indie culture. The fashion--well that is all theirs. I dress in interesting ways but I can't afford the skinniest jeans or american apparel. Basically, hipsters are rich kids who have coopted indie culture. The unintended casualty is indie culture. feels bad, man
What's a normal person look like then?
>>599817>People don't really hate hipstersHipster detected
>>599821me
>>599829What I meant if it was tl;dr was that hipsters are not the same as indie culture and it's not cool how indie culture gets slammed with the h-word constantly. Also, 4channers exhibit more arrogance than a williamsburg trustafarian could ever conjure up.
>>599817What your really describing yourself as is poor. You say you buy the cheapest beer, you don't live in williamsburg because its too expensive (which, admittedly, it is, considering where else you could rent in BK), and you don't shop at american apparel because you can't afford it(?). Now, I understand I'm putting words in your mouth here, but the way it comes off it sounds like you'd take every advantage the bouergioisie rich kids do- if you could. As for the arrogance, no shit. What do you want from anonymous strangers?
>>599891Right. I shouldn't have suggested that i would shop at AA if i could, because I don't really fancy it. I would live in williamsburg if it was still cheap, because in NYC i would have more access to seeing bands perform that I really like and a more productive independent film scene. As it is, NYC is pretty much a non-option if you don't have disposable income. At other points in history you could have at least went there and slummed it like a so-called bohemian. Also, drinking PBR I think was because it is cheap. Even hipsters who are rich are attracted to a cheap beer and anyone who likes to drink their beer in massive quantity would be. I wasn't saying that I drink cheaper beer just because I'm poor but it's just because it is cheaper a quantitative advantage. PBR is no longer the cheapest because it has been ''gentrified''. I hope that clears things up.
Here's how to figure out if you're a hipster:Think of something you like, ideally in the field of literature or music. Got something? Cool. Now try to think of why you like it. If you can explain why you like it without appealing to its obscurity or without parroting what other "cool" people have said about it, there's a good chance that you like it genuinely, and you're probably not a hipster, because hipsters only like things when it makes them look cool. Also, if you still listen to MGMT or the Decemberists or even Neutral Milk Hotel, you're probably not a hipster.
>>598880>>598906left-humanism plus avoidant social strategies directed against conventional mainstream from motives stemming from personal poverty/inadequacya hipster cannot tell you DADADADADADADADADA!
>>599913PBR is superior in taste to a very large swathe of the domestic beer market here in the US. Even brands like Pacific are comparatively banal against imports (inc. mexican draughts).*sigh*
>>600047> PBR is superior in taste to a very large swathe of the domestic beer market here in the US.Oh, lord. You can find the strangest people on the Internet.
>>600005That's why i only listen to ambient black metal
>>600052Bullcock. For god's sake, I live in Cleveland and there are far superior domestic brews. CLEVELAND.
Steel Reserve 211 black and red label FTW all other beers are shallow and pedantic.
>>599835>Also, 4channers exhibit more arrogance than a williamsburg trustafarian could ever conjure up.I'm afraid that is a product of anonymous discourse.
>>600047thank u cause guess whos drinking pbr right fucking now
Walk into a cafe in Portland, Brooklyn, Tallahasse or Ann Arbor.See that guy in those fucking Ray-Ban glasses with that facial stubble and Hitler hair? See him reading Camus or Rand or Marx? Notice his out of place tweed suit jacket, skin tight jeans and flat soled sneakers? Notice the bicycle parked next to his seat?Try to strike up a conversation with him? He'll tell you why you shouldn't be wearing leather or eating meat. He'll tell you how everything the government is doing is for LOLOIL. He'll expound on the virtues of NPR. Then he'll tell you he's an art/film/music student. That's if he even deems you cool enough to talk to at all, of course. Yeah. That's a hipster. They're everywhere.
>>600405You seem to be agreeing with the post you quoted.
"I'm so hip it's a wonder me bum don't fall off."Zaphod Beeblebrox
>>600005Oh good, I still listen to the Decemberists...whew, I thought I was hipster for a moment there! Thanks anon!
>>600590No problem, Decemberists-friend. They went too mainstream for the hipsters, so those of us who listen to music we like whether it's cool or not are safe!
>>600472out of all the cities in the world, why did you mention tallahassee? I mean there are plenty more hipster- heavy cities than that
