I have a part time job as a taxi driver in Toronto (i'm white) and I always have a book of some kind with me in the car with me when I'm not on duty. I have it with me to pass the time as you can go for hours without any fares (especially during the night shifts).

As can be expected most of the other taxi drivers in the city are foreign and they always ask why I'm reading. I answer that I enjoy it and that it passes the time. They usually just laugh at that and seem a little baffled.

I watch them sometimes and they just spend their hours staring blank eyed at nothing. I know for a fact that Toronto has one of the best library collections in the world and has thousands of books available in mutliple languages.

So why don't they read? Why do they treat it with such contempt?

Reading is an incredibly boring and challenging thing to accomplish if you have trouble with seeing the text take the form of a picture in your head.

There are a lot of people that can't perform that step and instead of a world with interesting characters and wondrous or frightful events, all they can literally see are words.

Thinking about it now....I have never seen a white taxi driver before.

    Why don't you ask them?

I have a part time job as a Librarian in Toronto (i'm Pakistani) and I always have a Taxi of some kind parked outside when I'm not on duty. I have it with me to pick up fares as you can go for years without any real living wage as a librarian (especially during the recession).

As can be expected most of the other librarians in the city are citizens and they always ask why I'm driving a taxi. I answer that I enjoy it and that it passes the time. They usually just laugh at that and seem a little baffled.

I watch them sometimes and they just spend their hours reading books and cataloging. I know for a fact that Toronto has one of the best Taxi services in the world and has thousands of taxi drivers available in mutliple nationalities.

So why don't they drive taxi's? Why do they treat it with such contempt?

Why don't you try and have an actual conversation with them about it. Jesus.

I worked in a warehouse in Mississauga and there were plenty of foreigners who spent their break time reading books.
