39 KB Battle Royale Novel ran 04/01/10(Thu)21:15 No.504340
Just finished. Best contemporary literature I've read in some time. I was rather surprised I found this in the pulp SF section at borders.

    FUCKING BORDERS

Anyway, I enjoyed it, too. If you're interested, there's a manga of it as well.

saw the film. It was good, but book goes into much greater detail.

is the manga like the book, detailed characters, etc?

Make sure you find a scanlation of the manga. The "official" U.S. translation is so localized it hurts.

Only thing I didn't like in Battle Royale is how you can really tell when the author gets lazy on his back story for certain characters.

When you re-watch the movie after you've read the book you notice how incredibly fast paced the movie is, and not in a good way.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)21:37 No.504399
So the novel's actually worth reading?
    >> ran 04/01/10(Thu)21:37 No.504403
    >>504399
    yes.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)21:39 No.504407
Did not enjoy this book. I felt like I was reading a bad snuff film without the sex.

I was worried it might be aimed at the 'young-adult' genre.

Eh. where can I find a good scanlation? It isn't on onemanga.

It may have just been my particular edition, but while I enjoyed the narrative the actual writing itself was terrible. I'm hoping I just got a bad translation.

have you read other books translated from japanese? i thought the same thing of BR, and also of the ring when i read it. i kinda wonder if maybe japanese fiction just has a different kind of flow to it than western fic. i noticed that both of them occasionally address the reader in strange ways.

BR is the first Japanese novel I've read, but I was thinking of trying Ring. I found that BR jumped between third and first personal perspective mid-paragraph. It was really quite jarring.

    >>504458
yeah, exactly! i didn't hate it but it was odd. and i noticed stuff like that in the ring too.

if you liked the movie, then yes. Much more character development.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)21:54 No.504465
You know, I like this a lot.

"We interrupt this program for a special news report. Attend."

I love that dystopian dictatorial...whatchamacallit. Overtone.

Had similar problems reading other Japanese translations 3-4 years ago.

No such problem now. The one I have is the 2009 translation. There was another shitty one done by Viz a couple of years ago, I think.

is this mangafox site gonna fuck up my computer? I'm getting lots of audio ads.

Oh shit. I just checked, and mine is indeed the Viz Media one. That'll teach me for wanting the schnazzy cover.

is the newer translation much better? i enjoyed the viz one.

oh the viz cover is much cooler looking.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)22:05 No.504507
the translator on both editions is the same though, i believe.

    this is some gory shit
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)22:07 No.504514

Checking out the manga? Fuck yes it's gory. Obscenely so.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)22:10 No.504518
Incredibly dull. Like reading about someone playing a video game.
    >> ran 04/01/10(Thu)22:11 No.504521
    >>504518
considering that BR is about a "game", I don't see how third person terse prose is a detractor.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)22:33 No.504589
I first saw the movie and loved it because it was such an interesting concept. I then read the manga and loved it because it explored each of the characters in such greater detail. I then read the novel; it was good and all, but I still rate the movie + manga more highly.
