    Is it any good?

Most people tend to think so, yeah.

    DEPRESSING AND POINTLESS

UNLESS YOU HAVE A HARD ON FOR POST APOCALYPTIA

OR SURVIVAL STORIES LIKE HATCHET N' SHIT

It doesn't stand up to what I use as my yardstick for "classic, worthwhile, etc." writing but I don't regret reading it. I've been coming back after reading some discussions on here and appreciating the ending more lately.

McCarthy writes in an unbelievably blunt, repetitive way. I'd say it's on par with reading a high school novel except he occasionally peppers in a thesaurus or outdated word here and there. He clips thoughts and ideas before they really flesh out. I think that might be a stylistic choice to accent the setting of the book, but it didn't get me thrilled. Think Hemingway but reserved and constantly cutting himself off.

If you're in it for a thrilling, post-apocalyptic jaunt however you might be better served by playing Fallout 3 for six hours.

    This

    I loved it
    >> Anonymous 03/29/10(Mon)18:02 No.491752
Read it for school. I liked it. Really depressing, but brilliant. If/when you read it, really take shit in, don't speed through it or else its effect is completely lost.
    I'd recommend it.

Read all the way through it until the last paragraph and be depressed.

Read the last paragraph, and feel uplifted or suicidal based on your interpretation.

    But yeah, it's good.

I just started reading it, and I'm not sure how I feel so far. I'm not a big fan of the style.

I had to write a high school mid-term essay on this book. I ended up talking about how the desolation in the world was reflected in the writing style in order to effectively convey the sense of lifelessness and hopelessness in the novel.

Teacher loved it so much she used it as a model. Feels good, man.

This shit happened to me all the time. I'm not even that good, imo; I'm just surrounded by hicks and gangstas.

Well, it's not like he's a modern Melville or anything.

I got it as a present. I enjoyed it. The writing style was slightly hard to get into, but I am a fan of post-apocalyptic storylines.
The movie adaptation stuck to it as well.
