30 KB The first book I've had to force myself to finish in ages Anonymous 03/04/10(Thu)22:07 No.380517
I read this because of the glowing reviews. It took me 3 months to get through this garbage mascarading as book. Not because it's 1,000 pages but because of mindnumbingly boring. In hands of a real writer this would have been 500 page book and possible good. As written it isn't even readable. Nothing happens for hundreds of pages. The only thing to keep you turning pages is the thought something must happen. Characters like Eddard Stark are so one sided they are a joke. Everything that happens is forced. Characters are never rational. Most of the scenes are contrived. The whole off with his head thing is so pathetic. Then I am left wondering what third grader edited the book. Does Martin know how to say anything without thirty layers of nonsense surrounding it? Doubtful...No, oops that's he said doubtfully, anxiously, darkly...Oops no, I meant he spit or should I have said.

Beyond that, I found the characters to be very one dimensional, two to three words wholly describe mot of the characters, and very very few are actually people I found I could empathise with and care about. By page 400 or so I was tired of waiting for anything to happen, and by page 700 I was furious. When I finished the book and I was still waiting for the story to actually start, I was not at all pleased. A couple of the stories literally spend almost 100 pages to get absolutely nowhere at all.

All in all, I cannot understand why this series is popular at all. I loathed this book, and I will not be reading any more of the series. This is the first book I've struggled to make myself read, and be glad when it was over. I would happily recommend this book to people I don't like or individuals that have somehow befriended me that annoy the crap out of me.

I'm with you op. First, I'd like to say that the reason I hate this book is not because it is 807 pages (believe me I have read a 1204 page book in three days) or because of the sexual content in the book (although most of it was unneccessary). The reason I hate this book is because it sucked! I was astonished that it got so many great reviews. The plot was extremely slow and dull. And the whole story seemed unoriginal, like I've heard it many times before. The author has been praised for his amazing characters and personally I found them flat, boring and predictable. They seemed to have no original thoughts or feelings and some of their actions were unrealistic in human nature. I felt as if everyone had a blank expression on their face and they were speaking in monotone. This book really disapointed me and it put a mark on my good reputation. I had never stopped reading a book in the middle of the story, no matter how bad. Well, this one was a first. Reading became a pain and I avoided it when I had this book (and if you knew me you would think I was mentally ill or something). I think this is a horrible author and you would do good to avoid his work. Try Tolkien or Anne Bishop if you want something more intricate than Harry Potter (which is still awesome, by the way). They are my two favorite authors.

so how angry does it make you nerds that HBO has given a series based on the books a go?

I disagree. I had a clear vision of each main character and had emotional connections to many of them. If you didn't that's okay with me.

I didn't care for the first book, but it gets better later on.

I'm not dissing you when I say this: why would you read a thousand-page sequel to a book to a thousand-page book that you didn't care for?

Shit, man, life is too short to read stuff you don't like.

Seriously guys, is this book any good? I'm thinking of reading it - but since it's not in my library, I'll have to buy it, and I'm not wasting $20 if it's no good.

If you like a combination of fantasy and politics, it's good. OP clearly didn't like it, but a lot of other people do. See if you can find it online or something.

Check it out. Amazon do enough business with us that I think it may only cost a couple of bucks.

If you're Australian Book Depository is better for new books as it has free shipping so it works out cheaper overall.
