  • Over the past 48 hours 4chan's formspring page has gotten over 12,000 questions, and I've received over 3,000 e-mails. Many thanks to everyone who submitted a question, and sent me a message! I was able to respond to a few hundred e-mails and had hoped to start answering questions on formspring, but it seems that the number of questions broke the page. Once that's sorted out, I'll sift through them and answer as time allows.
Thanks again for all of the support!

In other news, /rs/ now processes MediaFire/MegaUpload/and a bunch of other links correctly (this had been broken for months). The old links should be updated in about a week (the checker is taking a while).
Thanks to Popcorn Mariachi for spontaneously appearing and fixing this.

Final reminder: Ask questions here, e-mail me here (I read *every* one), and follow 4chan on the Twitter here.

I actually read the entire Bible before. When I was in high school, I read the Old and New Testaments while riding the school bus. As a literary text, it's one of the greatest stories ever told literary and historically. If a person can read the Bible, he can read anything that has the same page length if the person takes his/her time.It took me about two months to complete the Bible.

However I doubt if most Americans, especially Christians, read the entire Bible for themselves.

It's easy and completely free of any embarrassment to admit you're wrong on 4chan. It's obviously something we can appreciate, though.

It's different, however, when you come across an arrogant person IRL who never admits he is wrong. If that person were to admit publicy that he was wrong about something big, it would be a crushing blow to his pride and integrity.

Well if it's on 4chan, there is no "pain" when he admits he was wrong. He is anonymous.

Admitting you are wrong on 4chan is "painless", it's only really about whether you can be bothered to post that you were wrong.

I respect a person's overcoming of their own pride and arrogance to be truthful more than I do a persons lack of laziness when posting on 4chan.

you're wrong here, it's really difficult to admit you're wrong, because you're criticising yourself and letting the other guy have the satisfaction of being right when you were not (damn that guy being right, when you were not!)
the feeling stays the same however applied (IRL and OL), it's just less socially damaging to insist you're right when no-body knows who that arrongant prick who can't admit defeat is.

    >it's really difficult to admit you're wrong, because you're criticising yourself and letting the other guy have the satisfaction of being right

I think this is where we differ. The "satisfaction of being right" doesn't exist for me on 4chan. Instead, the "satisfaction of knowing the truth" at the end of an anonymous argument replaces it.

I don't see any satisfaction in being "right" and an anonymous person being wrong when it has 0 repercussions IRL other than perhaps a small amount of reassurance that your knowledge is correct.

That's basically why I think it is more respectable to admit you are wrong when you know you are IRL, as opposed to when you're completely anonymous sitting at a computer talking to someone you'll likely never talk to again, and not know about it even if you do.

It's interesting you mention this, and it's very unfortunate that most people are like you.

I don't see why you think it's a bad thing.

You "were" stupid, now you are a little smarter, yet you feel like shit?

When we are wrong IRL, we are a little embarrassed because it is revealed that we wrong, but we learn from our mistakes and don't repeat that mistake. We are now smarter.

When we are wrong in complete anonymity, the embarrassment is no where to be seen, only the improvement of correcting yourself.

It's kind of funny that what is keeping us in discussion is that we both want to convince each other, or at least state what we think and not seem to hold incorrect beliefs.

    >I had no motivation to admit that

    Other than being consistent?

My point is that on 4chan, we don't have a character that our incorrectness can be projected upon. We're just minds expressing our opinions, taking other opinions and using what truth is contained in them to shape our own, trying to get as close to what is reasonable as possible.

If I posted something on 4chan, exclaimed that it was true and then got 100 replies saying it's complete bullshit and why, I would leave the computer knowing that I have improved my knowledge, and in doing so I haven't been embarrassed publicly. It is a win-win. There is no "hurt" in then posting "Oh, you're right. How silly of me to be caught with such a misconception". If it was real life and I had said this in front of a hall of people, it would be embarrassing.

Maybe I am a lone case, and maybe that is a sad fact.

Surely people would be better off if they were happy when they were wrong and learned from it, and were keen at getting at the truth without being hindered by their egos.
