On Sunday we rolled out new HTML for 4chan's imageboards. The new code validates HTML5/CSS3, the design should appear exactly the same, pages should load slightly faster (especially long threads), and extension/user script/archive developers should have a much easier job parsing our pages. This is the first time in approximately ten years that it has been updated.

If you are using an extension or app that has not been updated for the changes, some features may not work—you will need to wait for the developer to update their extension/app to be compatible with the new HTML. If you haven't downloaded it already, try the Official 4chan Chrome Extension.

The most significant changes with the new HTML are a new mobile-optimized layout for phones, and inline extension features. Check them out by clicking [Settings] in the upper-right (make sure you don't select features that conflict with those from an extension though), or visit 4chan from your phone!

We are still working through a few bugs with the new code. Please report any bugs you find to newhtml@4chan.org.

Hey /lit/ how do i stop subvocalizing

All my life i read at subvocalizing pace because i thought it made sense... especially when you read dialogue

But that hamstrings your reading speed.
Thing is if i try and read any faster for any extended clip of time, i either get really tired, or my eyes bug out so i probably look like i'm trying to hate the book to death, or anoesis kicks in like a motherfucker and all i am doing is just reading words on a page and not really absorbing what i just read 2 seconds ago.

Halp?
>>
When reading, try mentally focussing as hard as you can on the point of your nose.

I don't get it
To read faster you actually have to think on an object other than the text your eyes are scanning?
>>
>>2656225
Take or leave it mate. If you don't want to improve, that's up to you.
>>
in my experience, the best thing to do is just focus on the text until you start to get absorbed by the narrative. It takes a fair amount of concentration and persistence if your mind is naturally one to wander
>>
If I don't subvocalize I can't remember shit for some reason. Maybe my brain is untrained, perhaps even defective. But I prefer to take my time and appreciate things than speed.
>>

whatever works, man
>>
>>2656230
I didn't say that in any kind of disqualifying tone. I simply didn't get it.

I tried it on the notice at the top of the page but i guess it worked to some extent. Im simply curious of the mechanics of it

Sure that's the way i saw things too, but my mother can tear through books and looks at me weird when i told her recently that i read at subvocalizing pace

She's sliced through two Game of Thrones volumes in maybe 3 weeks to a month or something.. at a recreational speed
>>
...It hadn't occurred to me that 'subvocalizing' was a thing that some people didn't do. I'd always been more or less content with my reading speed.
>>
>>2656265
Well, I subvocalize, and I read each ASoIaF book in under a week apiece.
Maybe I just have a lot more free time than your mom.
>>
>>2656247

Ok, I just tried not subvocalizing while reading.

It didn't work, I think. I definitely can read at a much faster pace than usual, but soon I realized that I was also subvocalizing faster. Likesomeonetalkingreallyfastwithoutcatchingtheirbreathorsomeshitlikethat!

It's definitely like three our four times faster, but still subvocalizing...
>>
>>2656308
I always subvocalize, but I just read something that helps.
Push your reading speed, and hum while you're doing it. For me, at least, it stops subvocalization.
>>
>>2656315

Huh. Humming seems to do the trick. Interesting. Must practice further.
>>
Why is it important to be fast? Without skipping, I can probably read an average sized novel in a day and a half. Why would I need to be quicker than that?
>>
>>2656325
Might come off as a bit doofy if you hum every time you read in public, though...
>>
isn't speed reading like watching movies at 2x or faster just for the sake of getting through them quickly?
>>
>>2656339
not really, at least if you read at a rate you're comfortable with. the only real difference is the rate at which you traverse the material.
