On Sunday we rolled out new HTML for 4chan's imageboards. The new code validates HTML5/CSS3, the design should appear exactly the same, pages should load slightly faster (especially long threads), and extension/user script/archive developers should have a much easier job parsing our pages. This is the first time in approximately ten years that it has been updated.

If you are using an extension or app that has not been updated for the changes, some features may not work—you will need to wait for the developer to update their extension/app to be compatible with the new HTML. If you haven't downloaded it already, try the Official 4chan Chrome Extension.

The most significant changes with the new HTML are a new mobile-optimized layout for phones, and inline extension features. Check them out by clicking [Settings] in the upper-right (make sure you don't select features that conflict with those from an extension though), or visit 4chan from your phone!

We are still working through a few bugs with the new code. Please report any bugs you find to newhtml@4chan.org.

Why do people volunteer to go to something as unimaginably horrifying as war?
>>
GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS DEFENDING OUR FREEDOMS AMERICA NUMBER ONE

JUST LIKE CALL OF DUTY AND HALO
>>
Financial issues are the first things to come to mind.
>>
Delusions, mostly.

Most operate under the false pretense of actually helping anyone instead of creating more problems in a conflict that has nothing to do with them.

All is fine and dandy until the truth catches up to them and then they get PTSD and get discharged, spending the rest of their lives questioning what could have been done differently if they hadn't pulled that trigger until eventually dying full of regrets.
>>
Honestly some people just want to get paid to kill motherfuckers legally.
Others just want to leave their shithole families and towns grab that GI Bill money and go to college or some trade school.
Then there's the fucks who buy into the whole RARAMURRIKAFIGHT4FREEDOM bullshit.
>>
If you're gonna die, you might as well die honorably.

The last war that was truly worthwhile was WW2.

Anything after that is bullshit, unnecessary deaths because of nonsensical political proxy conflicts.

War breeds war, it is infinitely stupid to applaud war for protecting us against war.

All wars have been fought over land. War is driven by nothing more than the incentive for material gain.
>>
Because it's incredibly easy to detach yourself from something you're not confronting until you have no choice.
>>
>>2651649

How was WWII different from any other war? You're right if you mean from America's point of view though, because we had less incentive to go in than other nations.

Because the world unified to bring down one of the most aggressive fascist states to date.

The technological advancements made in those 6 years alone account for twice that of what was made in the 60 years previous.

It helped the world realize the horrors of fascism, and how quickly it spreads if people let their guard down and submit to a dictatorship.

It's a great way to get chicks.

This.
>>
Anyone who thinks that people join the military for the "thrill" of it understand absolutely nothing about psychology.
>>
Here's why I think why most would become an infantrymen.

Ever notice how many of the military grunts are young and are from lower middle class to poor families?

I'm sure you can understand why.
>>

>Because the world unified to bring down one of the most aggressive fascist states to date.
That's a funny way of putting it. Did the world really "unify"? As I recall, the Axis alliance consisted of several notable countries too who certainly did not unify under the same noble cause you were referring to. If anything WWII served to show us just how horribly we could divide ourselves. Not to mention how quickly the Alliance further splintered after the war. WWII didn't build up any kind of lasting unity or solidarity, it just left a power vacuum for the US and the USSR to fight about.

>The technological advancements made in those 6 years alone account for twice that of what was made in the 60 years previous.

Why not go to war at all times possible to speed up technological advancement tenfold?

That's an awful reason for accepting a war as worthwhile. How many lives is going to the moon worth?

>It helped the world realize the horrors of fascism, and how quickly it spreads if people let their guard down and submit to a dictatorship.

People have been submitting to dictatorships since before recorded history. No one needed WWII to realize that.

To paraphrase the great Bob Dylan, only the most vile liar could "expect me to believe a World War can be won."

Joining the military is a mix of detachment, delusion, and conformity, with the percentage of each shifting from era to era.
>>
>>2651737
>I met a couple of anecdotal people through my cousin therefore the entirety of the military is like that

It's like you're actually retarded.
>>
I tried to join the military simply because I hated my family, friends, and nearly everyone who shared my interests, and because I liked the idea of living in a communal, egalitarian society.

I was permanently barred from joining though. I'll probably regret that for the rest of my life.

You know what kills US soldiers more than combat ever since the invasion of Iraq?

Suicide. More soldiers have committed suicide than soldiers killed in combat in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Think about that for a second.

Im sorry, you have absolutely no fucking clue what you're talking about, your uncles 'friends' are probably dumbfuck reservists and trigger happy baboons who probably haven't even seen a real Iraqi yet.

Also stop using 'sheltered suburban white kid', it's just a blanket buzzword term.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Well, globally, some of them are forced, some do it as dedication to their beliefs (religous or otherwise) and some do it as dedication to their country. Then again, alot of people join the millitary, and then are sent to war. Alot of people join the military because they pay for your higher education (in america). In german, up until (last?) year, it was duty for every male citizen to join the defensive forces or whatthehell. But alot of people just talked their way out of it.

My brother joined the navy to ride a submarine. That's probably really simplified, but it's a goddamn submarine.

I was not in any way trying to say that PTSD is not a serious problem. Regardless, I deleted the post because I see how it could have been construed as such.

>>2651793
I probably should have clarified. I was just trying to prove (through anecdotal evidence) that a some people go on multiple tours with the military because they have a psychological affinity for the military lifestyle. It wasn't intended as a blanket statement that everyone in the military is satisfied with their job.

Because it's a high prestige occupation that even poor people with little education can get. Their other options are shit, so the military looks pretty damn nice by comparison.

Well of course its not often an 'intellectual' volunteers so you can't expect the answer to be all that interesting or substantiated beyond a silly sense of 'pride' or 'duty'. I myself have done it for more conceptual reasons that extend to observations I have seen in[...]

A couple of years back I listened to a radio documentary about the
civil war and the break up of Yugoslavia. My country were one of
the countries who sent peace keeping troops there, mainly to Kosovo.
In the documentary several people were interviewed and most
interesting of all was the fact that two of the interviewees had met
in Kosovo, but fighting for opposing sides.

The officer spoke of how he lead a patrol along a road in the woods
on their way to some village. Ahead they see a roadblock and they
slow down and sort of get ready for a confrontation. The officer
dismounts from his vehicle and approaches the soldiers maintaining
the roadblock. He tries to negotiate passing through but the soldiers
are reluctant to let him pass. After a few moments tense discussion
one of the soldiers steps forward and as he sees that the officer who
wants to pass through is Swedish, he tells his comrades to back
down and let them pass.

It turns out he was a swede who went down there to fight in the
Yugoslavian civil war as a volunteer. He had no relations in any of
the balkan countries and seemingly did it for the thrill. In the
interview he expressed a desire to 'go back to basics' and live like
man used to, in constant strife to survive the day. He had grown
restless in an environment of TV, luxury and surplus and decided
that the best cure for it was war.
>>
Because people undee the age of 21 do not understand consenquences of their (future) actions, nor how truly awful war can be on the psyche.
>>
Because if they didn't, then idiots would rule the world.

Also, because they're not self-centered egotists who care more about themselves than families and children.
>>
>>2652293

>implying idiots don't rule the world
>>
>>2652202
This is some hardcore bullshit. Yeah, a lot of teens think they're hot shit, but that doesn't mean they're retarded.
>>
I joined the army because I wanted to do exciting things and jump out of helicopters and ride around in saracens and fire rifles at stuff and generally have a good time. It seemed better than rotting back in Yorkshire. The idea of going to war was very secondary to the idea of abseiling off an oil rig.
>>
>>2652313

No, generally people with Down Syndrome are able to understand they are not 1) immortal 2) invincible or 3) unstoppable killing machines whereas most young people under age 25 are not.
