I'm a woman, but when I read that the protagonist of a story is a woman, I usually put it down right then. I just don't trust the story not to desolve into a bad romance as soon as the chance (or a disagreeable, yet handsome young man) presents itself.

I might be persuaded to buy it anyway, if the story is good or unique enough, but that's few and far between.

Can /lit/ recommend some, then? Stories where there's a female protagonist that doesn't lean heavily on the fact that she's a bitch to the male protagonist until they doink?

Check out "The Scar" by China Mieville. It's the second in a trilogy, but you don't really need to have read the first one to understand it. Main character is pretty awesome. Also Pirates and Quantum Mechanics-Infinite Universe Theory-Magic Sword stuff.
