04/27/12(Fri)20:52 No.2597882I
have so much respect for fanfiction, honestly. It's getting so many
young people into reading and writing, and that's probably one of the
best things anything can do. I don't think it's destructive or
degrading or anything to the original work, since the only way it would
directly affect the original and people's opinions about it would be to
gain more fans, which is never a bad thing. Merits, definitely. Say, a
show's been off air for years or a book has no sequels, and you've
gotten terribly attached to the characters - what can you do?
Fanfiction. When it's written well, it has just the effect of the
original. And that's wonderful. I suppose I can see why it might
(probably does) offend authors, but I don't think it's very harmful to
them. Like I said, what can it do besides gain more fans? I mean,
nothing bad can really happen, mostly because fanfiction is usually an
underground type thing. Or, at least it's been in my experience with it. I
do believe the good ones can be considered literature in their own
right. Creating characters is of course important in original works, but
if you already have quality characters who have quality character
development throughout a quality story, that's literature, don't you
think? |
