Hi /Lit/ my best friend made me watch the new Sherlock Holmes movies with that uprising and well talented Robert Downey Jr. At the end of each movies I was wondering, " what kind of literature that Sherlock Holmes would like to read? ". It may seem that he's readings would be about how to solve puzzles or how to be logic ... but I don't think so I would rather suggest that his reading would be more vague like any handbook about technology, mathematics, biology, chemistry or physics and mechanical engineering.
    What do you reckon ?
Any ideas about those kind of books? saying that we are between 1800 and 1900 ?

    He reads strictly pederasty erotica.

A great contribution, if OP is not aware, taken from 'A Study in Scarlet'.

don't think you get sherlock holmes from that stupid movie.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/12(Wed)15:43 No.2591703

Indeed, but by the time of the Strand stories we have him making references to Thomas Carlyle.

I think it'd be worthwhile compiling a list of literary works referenced by Holmes. The trick would be, of course, that when people had read them in order to more fully inhabit the character's world, they would accidentally have given themselves the beginnings of a Victorian humanities education.

yeah it's always strange to me that people want to talk about holmes but then only talk about the movies or the tv show

    >>2591703
yeah and IIRC telling Watson about his bibliographic excursions, like getting a first edition of Grotius. clearly watson was a humanizing force on holmes, or perhaps as holmes became more involved in the corridors of power he saw the utility of a somewhat broader range of knowledge.

it's an interesting question and could, i think, be the subject of a nice little essay. i know there's a sherlockian essay extant about Holmes' book-buying habits but none, so far as i know, that focus on his reading, and in particular on the change in his reading habits.

hey, jeremy brett is a bad ass motherfucker.

the movie was so bad though. it'd be one thing if it were mediocre but it was worse than that. it was detrimental.

it was a perfectly entertaining movie, man, the only problem was that someone made this inexplicable error and put "sherlock holmes" in the title when it clearly wasn't about sherlock holmes at all.

but yeah, jeremy brett and other adaptations are cool, but the wonderful stories always come first to me, and if OP is curious about eg holmes' reading habits i just don't understand why he wouldn't, you know, read the books to see if they had anything in them about that

Yes I'm trying to get my hands on that list because I'm doing a "tour du monde"... and I would like to do something useful
    >>2591767
I don't really like fictional books, even movies... that's why I said at the beginning that my friend "made me watch" the Sherlock Holmes movies. But I'm stil doing my research about the sherlock reading habits and thanks to >>2591683 I know now where I'll be looking at !
    >> anti-procratinator 04/25/12(Wed)17:21 No.2591975

    >thinking these movies have anything to do with Sherlock Holmes

The character is in the public domain, so they just take the name and use it for their shit action movie to get more attention.

    >it was a perfectly entertaining movie, man,

ugh. i can't say you're wrong but that's almost exactly like someone saying Eragon is a perfectly entertaining book. i can't say they're wrong either.
    >> Anonymous 04/26/12(Thu)12:01 No.2593939
ritchies' sherlock movie (the first one) is relatively well-adherent to doyle canon character-wise.

holmes was a bit more actiony and watson a lot less useless than they give them credit for nowadays.

also watson was a woman: http://www.hwslash.net/stout.html

well first of all i'm only talking about the first movie because i didn't see the second. and honestly, yeah, it was a pretty entertaining action movie. it wasn't overly insulting to the intelligence (ok, well, it kind of was, but in a way i could compartmentalize), rdj was entertaining, it was a good time. sorry not every movie i watch is on the criterion collection i guess?

i was dragged to 1 and 2, so i'm more at fault, for fueling it. i just have trouble stomaching movies so weak and bloated. i really wish studios didn't think so little of audiences. you can make something just as funny or exciting without compromising quality.
    >> anti-procratinator 04/26/12(Thu)15:24 No.2594278
please get back to the subject, let's talk more about the books than about the movies.

    >" what kind of literature that Sherlock Holmes would like to read? "

In the stories I'm pretty sure he's mentioned as having almost zero knowledge of literature.

    >>2591683
    Case in point.

Yeah, that excerpt is from "Study in Scarlet." It blatantly says Sherlock doesn't give a shit about literature.
