What does /lit/ read for unbiased news on curent events?

I want to get into it a bit more, but without having to navigate my way through all the bullshit. So far I've just been going on BBC world news but was looking into subscribing to a magazine. Time?

    Cheers
    >> Anonymous 04/12/12(Thu)16:07 No.2557902
Fox News, if recent threads are any indication.
But if your an American BBC is your only option as far as mainstream news goes. Don't know about internet sites.
Time magazine is not worth it. At all

Interesting. I always had the idea this wasn't the case - and was literally 30 seconds away from getting a years subscription haha thank you very much.

BBC is probably the least biased, but it's not perfect. Learn to detect bias yourself and check sources. Also stay well clear of the comments section of any news site it will make you want to die.

There is no such thing as unbiased news or even unbiased scholarship. "Propaganda model" and all that. Go to a news aggregator and read headlines to get a sense of what's going on. If you become interested in something specific, I'd wait a month or two for more sober analyses to begin emerging in scholarly publications.

I read The Long War Journal every day. It has excellent articles (though not many) on the middle east and afghanistan, by people who really know what they're talking about. The links and daily headline wrap up are very good too.

This seems to be typical of news sites around the world. I think of it as the /b/ outside of /b/. The hate is so pure there it will consume you.

On a more serious note, time will only give you another perspective on the bullshit you were already reading in other press, but it's the best this (or any) type of news coverage can do. Do research the political orientation of the magazine you're interested in, so you don't get too disgusted by their columnists. I prefer newsweek to time for this reason, tbh, and despite its general flaws.

I was watching 60 minutes I think about the emir or whatever of Qatar and he sets the tone for Al-Jazeera. Before the Syrian protests he was butt-buddies with Assad, but then he became a backstabbing motherfucker and look at the tone of Al-Jazeera on Syria now...

Like people have already said, no such thing as unbiased news. BBC is good for when it doesn't have to do with anything involving the UK. But I remember seeing something on the Falkland Islands and they were talking about how "british" they were, etc. It was so fucking biased it was unbelievable.

It's impossible to not find bias in American news though. Fox is heavily right wing, MSNBC is heavily left wing, CNN is slightly left wing. It's a fucking joke.

What about Reuters (I don't know if they have a television channel, but online)? Don't CNN and a lot of the other places sometimes get their stuff from Reuters. My impression is that they have the most up-to-date information and they have strict guidelines and avoid any bias. But I'm not 100% sure as I haven't used it that much.
    >> Anonymous 04/12/12(Thu)16:58 No.2558020
    >>2557997
No. All three main U.S. networks were firmly behind the Iraq war and usually toe the same general line. I would hesitate to call MSNBC or CNN left-wing, especially when you look at who they're owned by.
Reuters isn't useful either, they just got some journalists kicked out of Iran for writing a story about Iran's programme to train female ninja assassins. It was all complete bullshit.
Al-Jazeera used to be good on everything but Gulf Affairs, but now they're Syrian articles are pretty shitty as well. Use Al-Jazeera for everything outside the Middle East.
I also use Al Akhbar, probably the best Lebanese news source.
    Tehran Times is okay.
Haaretz, Financial Times, and The New Yorker are top flight as well.
The Guardian is okay only for cultural affairs.
Mainly, just stay widely read from many sources.

    >>2558020

Maybe I should clarify that I think MSNBC and CNN are left wing on domestic affairs. MSNBC is whining about conservatives 24/7. Vice-versa with Fox. But yeah, you're right they were all for the Iraq war. They're all basically neo-con when it comes to international affairs and Israel.

    I fucking love BBC news.

They're wonderful. No bullshit with the BBC.

And they don't allow comments on their stories, except for specific stories, and only from people living where said story happened, and all comments are approved by a moderator. So you don't get the stupid youtube level comment bullshit you see on other news websites.

My sister likes NPR news but they have too much of a political agenda. They're like the anti-fox news network.

And fuck CNN. CNN is the kind of station that thinks that Kim Kardashian's wedding was a big deal. When she got married they had this big "breaking news" thing on the front page.

BBC never does that. They report shit that's important.

Even with the royal wedding last year, BBC didn't report all that much. Not nearly as much as the shitty American news stations.

And BBC reporters don't force emotion when reporting tragic stories. They say everything in a very matter of fact way.

Contrast that to CNN and their coverage of the Japanese tsunami last year. Their reporters were so overly dramatic.

NPR is good for my area. But they are biased, though I can filter it because I know they are left leaning.

I can't listen to BBC News. When I hear it come on NPR with the "BEEP BBBEEEEPPP" shit I scramble to turn it off.

Al-jazeera is biased on anything about the middle east. But on everything else they are alright.

Russia Today is biased on everything that has to do with Russia or that Russia is involved in.

Everyone is biased. You just kind of have to filter.
    >> Anonymous 04/12/12(Thu)19:20 No.2558346
There's no such thing as an unbiased news source, you have to take the bias from all sides and be able to divine the motives of the source.

I watch PBS Newshour for decent, somewhat left-biased overview of the day. I use NPR as my far left-biased source (and my music news).

I use Russia Today for my anti-American news, they are extremely biased towards Russia/Russian allies, but if you want all sides of the story then it's definitely the way to go (avoid the Kaiser Report like the plague though, he's like some hyperactive secret love-child of Jimmy Fallon and French Stewart).

I'm a moderate libertarian so obviously I read a lot of Reason, Ludwig von Mises Institute, Cato Institute, Independent Institute, etc.

For muckraking I like the Center for Investigative Journalism, the Center for Public Integrity, and Frontline.
