That's a shame. You're a fool not to believe in god. God exists. Logically it's irrefutable. Leibniz, Aquinas and Spinoza all show this quite clearly.

logically there is a proven 'ultimate' or fundamental thing.

god is frequently defined as this thing.

so yes god is the ultimate and it does exist.

as far as anything less ambiguous goes, then yes your response comes in handy: you cant prove disprove, theres no reason to believe it. its all moral values and speculation.

To be fair he nows how pompous he comes off as, but he does it so as to "balance" against the radical arguments which he has to contend with.

not really. he's a pretty nice guy its just that given his antagonistic position towards the religious, anything he says will obviously be highly inflammatory no matter how he says it.

however as an intellectual, i don't rate him. i watch him in a discussion between the four horsemen where they actually are quite self critical and argumentative among themselves. dennett dawkins and harris pale in comparison to the mind of hitchens. its funny actually because in hitch 22 its clear he really respects the other three to the point where he's humbled by their intellectual prowess. I know hitchens doesnt* have the expertise in their particular fields but he has always been much more insightful and on the ball in sociopolitical, even philosophical and religious grounds. personally im more enthralled by hitchens writing and presentation than of the others.

i can see why they dont debate moderates. for one thing they dont disagree all that much. but i would also say its because moderate religious people have set up their position so that their god is piss easy to defend against. their god is highly ambiguous, doesn't affect anything, they accept everything science says and maintain thats all it all matter of faith simply because they dont want to let go. moderate people will never be convinced. when you sit across a table with a moderate and highlight everything you know in relation to the world they think god created and they still maintain that they ' just believe it' (actual quote) you know there's no point in engaging with them.

you cant discuss existence of god with them or belief but you can refute their points on morality and for the most this s easily accomplished with secularism by keeping church and state separate, we've largely achieved it

Why are people so pessimistic about their own careers? Looks like the physic majors are winning the war and you actually belive you made a bad choice with English, Film or even Sociology, Philosophy.

Each of you had your reasons to choose your course and I assume you are (or shouldn't be) not naive to think you got something completely different. "Oh I hate to read and think about stuff, I just want to get some money, that's why I'm a philosophy major". Not realistic. But with the highs and lows of every course, either be proud of it like a boss or admit you made the wrong choice and change. Don't stop in the middle of the way complaining like a fag.

    >>2316413
You are right about that on Dawkins. But I think that people should understand even though Dawkins defend his atheism openly, by saying things like "there is probably no God", he is not doing a preacher's work, his goal is not really to get people to his side, but to make things work. And by making things work I mean, without religion as an institution getting in the way. He doesn't get to the deep metaphysical discussion of theism vs atheism as a philosopher would get. He is practical in that sense, only talking about the God of religion, the God of the bible, the coran, that one interpretation of God extremists have, either for being naive, either for money or something in between, harming science and individual thought.

In the videos I've seen of him, I haven't noticed really any dickishness. True, he will ask questions of people such that the answers they will probably offer will surely make them look like idiots. One example that comes to mind was an interview he conducted at a school for Muslim women. One student told him that she'd been fully informed about natural selection (or something similar) and had independently decided to reject it; he asked her to describe natural selection (or whatever it was) and she had no clue what it was. So he made her look like kind of an idiot, but she'd essentially laid the trap for herself. I'm not sure I've ever seen him being an outright dick. Maybe you're right; I'm actually just curious why he has this reputation.

I'm in the UK so I don't know. Here, unless you studied it at Oxford or Cambridge you're liable to end up unemployed or in an entry level job that you don't need a degree for. This says more about snobbery and elitism than the quality of their degrees. I'm at a top twenty university as are most of my friends and everyone I know who graduated in English Literature, regardless of how well they did at their degree, is unemployed or working in a call centre or restaurant for minimum wage.

apparently they found a loophole where they could justify Toni Morrison as african-american lit, women's lit, and modern lit.

I don't think it was just my school either. Check out the free online lectures from Yale, I shit you not, 2/3 of this opening lecture was the feminist perspective, influence on women writers, Milton's views on women, etc. The professor used the term "dead white European man" and for some reason mentioned (via Virginia Woolf) Shakespeare's sister was denied a chance to write all those classic plays.
