Richard Yates is fucking terrible. His older stuff was a lot better. I know, I know "Tao Defence force" blah blah, but seriously, Tao isn't as bad as you think.
He's no Beckett, Pynchon or Bolano that's for sure, but he is a good writer. His works are enjoyable and fun (again with the exception of 'Richard Yates', and a few shorts in 'Bed')

Tao Lin has forced his way to minor fame and is trying to bring his circle of friends up with him. While I do appreciate and respect this, I think it would be better if he actually had something worthwhile to say.

I'm not sure he realizes that Richard Yates was so awful its actually putting him up there in the Miley Cyrus category. (People who achieve recognition whilst having no talent). It's actually alienating him from potential fans.

What he should be doing is taking a stance against this. Against the fat kids who stuff their faces with ready meals. Against the dreamers having their aspirations shredded by mind-numbing mainstream entertainment. Against the Simon Cowells filling the charts with preteen clones. There are thousands of disenfranchised youths at the moment, desperate for a champion.

He said he doesn't make social commentary, instead likes to focus purely on human behavior... This is his mistake. He is on the verge of creating a potential movement, but will never achieve it. If he 'grew a pair', started writing decent books, got his friends to write decent books, and brought some musicians into the mix, real musicians not the ITAOS type that he would inevitably end up with, he could actually create a movement. Something people would want to get behind.

He has the drive and motivation but nothing he says is worth hearing.
