The "New Horror" section of the /lit/ recommendations seems to be filled with mostly slasher/gorefest stuff.

Not having read much in the horror genre, what are some legitimately scary books that don't use gore as a crutch? Gore is fine - but not as an end.

Joe R. Lansdale? A little bit gory, but can be pretty scary at times.

Stephen King actually has his moments, admittedly.

    >>2092082
This is sometimes the case, but other times. (such as tripfags talking to each other), sage is appropriate because they don't want to 'bump' their non /lit/ comment.

Don't be so new in the future.
    >> Anonymous 09/20/11(Tue)15:53 No.2092090
Saging on /lit/ is pretty useless in both cases. If you do it out of hate, the thread will still stay on page 0 for about 35 minutes. Out of respect, and the same thing applies. Medium speed boards are much more conducive to saging.
    >> Anonymous 09/20/11(Tue)15:53 No.2092091

But you are not a tripfag so that example is invalid.

Moving on, within this category, I'd like to discuss ghost stories.

There's lots of different sorts of supernatural horror stories, but we always drift back to the ghost story like an old friend. What do you think the best ones you've read have been?

It's a good book, and one of the few I've read from some country other than the Usual Suspects, but how is it horrible?
It's basically Crime and Punishment without the "Crime" part. It's only "horror" if you consider the brutal elocution on human nature to be horrifying.

Ach, man, the one time Anais Nin gets mentioned on this board, and it's completely out of context. There's nothing horrific about her work.

    unless you're afraid of vaginas

For OP, I'm a big fan of Shaun Hutson who is both disgustingly gory and efficiently thrilling and horrific. He's not a great writer, I'll not lie, but he's bloody good at what he does, and he's one of those writers you think "hmm, OK, I'll give it a try", and then four, fve hours later you're thinking "I can't believe I the whole book, and OH MAI GOD TEH SLUGZ TEH SLUGZ"

Slugs is particularly horrible and cool.

How could Gore possibly be used as a crutch to generate horror? Squeamishness sure, but to be scared at some dude describing a decapitated head or some such shit doesn't really strike me as being nearly as evocative as it would be to see it visually. I wouldn't be surprised to see gore getting its fair share of genre coverage in the literary field than in film, where it actually could produce a legitimate crutch for horror.
