I thought it would be a good time to get one of these threads going, post your favorite quotes from a novel or series. Pic related.

"Show me a man or a woman alone and I'll show you a saint. Give me two and they'll fall in love. Give me three and they'll invent the charming thing we call 'society'. Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home." - Glen Bateman, The Stand (C&U), 3rd paragraph of Chapter 42. ~ Personal favorite.

My sentiment exactly, have another quote of the many. True beauty exists in these works.

The Hound: "There are no true knights, no more than there are gods. If you can't protect yourself, die and get out of the way of those who can. Sharp steel and strong arms rule this world, don't ever believe any different."
    Sansa: "You're awful."
The Hound: "I'm honest. It's the world that's awful. Now fly away little bird, I'm sick of you peeping at me."

The Hound shall never be forgotten.

The life that has borne me through these years is still in my hands and my eyes. Whether I have subdued it, I know not. But so long as it is there it will seek its own way out, heedless of the will that is within me." -Paul Baumer; "All Quiet on the Western Front"

    The following is obligatory

“You had an arse full of farts that night, darling, and I fucked them out of you, big fat fellows, long windy ones, quick little merry cracks and a lot of tiny little naughty farties ending in a long gush from your hole. It is wonderful to fuck a farting woman when every fuck drives one out of her. I think I would know Nora's fart anywhere. I think I could pick hers out in a roomful of farting women. It is a rather girlish noise not like the wet windy fart which I imagine fat wives have. It is sudden and dry and dirty like what a bold girl would let off in fun in a school dormitory at night. I hope Nora will let off no end of her farts in my face so that I may know their smell also.”

OP here, whoops, samefagging too much.
A few Dune quotes here that I particularly love.

"Too much knowledge never makes for simple decisions."
"The flesh surrenders itself, he thought. Eternity takes back its own. Our bodies stirred these waters briefly, danced with a certain intoxication before the love of life and self, dealt with a few strange ideas, then submitted to the instruments of Time. What can we say of this? I occurred. I am not . . . yet, I occurred."
"The man without emotions is the one to fear."
"A world is supported by four things
    the learning of the wise,
    the justice of the great,
the prayers of the righteous and
    the valor of the brave.
But all of these are as nothing without a ruler who knows the art of ruling. "

    >Of all the various kinds of sexual intercourse, this has the least to recommend it. As an amusement, it is too fleeting; as an occupation, it is too wearing; as a public exhibition, there is no money in it. It is unsuited to the drawing room, and in the most cultured society it has long been banished from the social board. It has at last, in our day of progress and improvement, been degraded to brotherhood with flatulence. Among the best bred, these two arts are now indulged only in private --- though by consent of the whole company, when only males are present, it is still permissible, in good society, to remove the embargo on the fundamental sigh.

As if that blind rage had washed me clean, rid me of hope; for the first time, in that night alive with signs and stars, I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world. Finding it so much like myself — so like a brother, really — I felt that I had been happy and that I was happy again. For everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate.

"Everyone is lonely, but there's more to it than that. Everyone, absolutely EVERYONE is so utterly, soul-crushingly lonely, deep down inside, that there is literally no helping them. And this goes for everyone you might see in your day-to-day life: the family man, the busy politician, the female research scientist, the young man that bags your groceries, your mother, smiling from the window. Everyone you know is the loneliest person you know.
Thus the only appropriate state of mind when dealing with other human beings is pity."

Ah, but if I'd put the name of a well-respected author that you were familiar with (or merely one that you thought might boost your social appearance of intelligence or wit to appear to be familiar with) you'd be celebrating the brilliance of the quotation. It's "quotation", by the way.

And now perhaps you begin to see why pity is the only rational response to other human beings? Everything you do, every attack you make on other people, is out of a fierce, bitter loneliness. I'm so sorry for you. I'm lonely too. I doubt you'll allow yourself to see it; I fear that my time is wasted here. No doubt the cries of "troll" or some greentext are coming my way. >>203071

I don't expect many people to understand, but somehow I'm still disappointed when they refuse to see what's right in front of their faces. The most pitiable thing, perhaps, is the way they rage and insult one another...and then they try it on me, see that it has no effect, and become even MORE enraged! "Oh no, I can't make this fellow angry", they think, "what shall I do!? That's how I deal with people, by screaming and insulting them! How do I deal with him!?"

It'd be unbelievably amusing if it weren't just another facet of our crushing loneliness. Anyhow, I suggest you ignore me if you don't understand my philosophy. I don't see much point in arguing with unpublished masses, anyhow.

My friend, I just believe your quote does not hold true to all. Many people that I do know do not suffer with loneliness, although I do grant that many go through such a phase as they carry down the road. I myself am what would be called a loner, I spend most of my time away from others and the majority of my actions are not based on loneliness in any respect. But, I may just be another exception that proves the rule in other cases for I am unable to feel otheres emotions, at least not those that lurk behind their body language and display of feeling.

Mr. Darwin was grieved to feel obliged to give up his theory that the monkey was the connecting link between man and the lower animals. I think he was too hasty. The monkey is the only animal, except man, that practices this science; hence, he is our brother; there is a bond of sympathy and relationship between us. Give this ingenuous animal an audience of the proper kind and he will straightway put aside his other affairs and take a whet; and you will see by his contortions and his ecstatic expression that he takes an intelligent and human interest in his performance.
